tangentially here, in a scenario where you have an album solely comprised of a ton of great songs at full length that are clearly "too short" (maximum like 1 minute and it's not even a soundtrack) vs like, an album of a lot of great songs that are "too long" (where the shortest song is like idk 8 mins)... i wonder what feels more "ambitious" to people. like to me both would get my attention pretty easily and leave a general impression along the lines of "this artist is clearly challenging themselves to go against convention" and i'm not sure what would stick out to me more tbh

to be fair the "average song listener" is far more likely to remark on something they like that is long than a jingle, no matter how much of a banger it may be, since there just isn't enough time to say much of anything a lot of the time

Finished The Hungry Lamb the other day after taking way too long to finish last month's Retro Mystery Club Vol. 2 first. (it was good! though i feel like some of the more quirky retro homage charm of the first one was lost here, the narrative was a bit more engaging and fleshed out here)

Anyway yeah, on Hungry Lamb, it's definitely no must-read, as all of it was fully to be expected, but it was still pretty good. They did a good job conveying the message they wanted to here and I'm glad it has been a big success for the studio. (iirc they're over 250k copies sold now and confirmed a sequel is in development for release next year. clearly having one of the most prolific content creators on bilibili to voice the main heroine worked out for them lol)

Thrilled to pick up both, they seem like rather similar releases come to think of it, and not just because of their obviously similar titles lol

Since, as things currently stand, there actually isn't anything I'm likely to pick up around launch early next month (there are a couple of things I'm interested in still sitting on Q2 release dates though, plus Until Then), I'll probably get around to picking up Animal Well, Aeruta and maybe Star Leaping Story around then. Others like Plushie from the Sky, Gift and Master Key i'll probably wait for a sale on now.

I recommend giving some of the better fangames a chance if you're up to it. Pokemon Sea and Sky... is still not out, but, it did have a demo back when it was still called Pokemon Ethereal Gates, and was a very authentic experience (albeit with some nice quality of life improvements, it's no romhack) with a lot of nods gameplay-wise to gen 5 specifically. Plus the region was set around where I live so of course I'm biased, hehe. Its dex is (or at least was at the time anyway) all original, but matches the general ethos of the mainline games up to that point well. In other words, it's very gen 5 lol. It also went by a few other names previously, including Helio Version and Imperial Sky.

Another one which has only ever had a partial release is Pokemon Phoenix Rising, which just announced it was rebranding last month to remove Pokemon ties out of copyright concerns. It's also gen 5-esque, but does its own thing a lot more (also not a romhack). Unlike Sea and Sky, its demo (or Episode 1, rather) was making use of existing mons, and even introducing new mega evolutions, though obviously that's not likely to remain true now. It also featured unique UI and a very different kind of plot structure. Unlike many fangames, it actively avoided adding fakemons (which was surely a blessing in disguise given how low the bar is, a big part of why I liked Ethereal Gates was because it actually made ones that didn't just feel like edgy tumblr/reddit crap) so the decision to rebrand now has definitely set it back that much further now, but given all the work they put in to distinguish itself in other areas, it could be worse.

Oh yeah also avoid ones like Uranium

also check out 200% Mixed Juice if you're remotely familiar with or open to trying out any of the other games from its dev group Orange_Juice. I'm always down to teach people the ropes when it comes to multiplayer matches in that (they're relatively pokemon-esque, though strictly 3v3 and moves fall into 3 types in different priority brackets. there's some fun depth to it)

secundum is definitely a top 5 minimum zwei2 song imo (i'd probably say it's my second favourite overall actually) so the fact the decision here is probably the most clear cut for me of the day really says a lot

granted, i can say i'd probably still take it over subterranean while i'm still not sure if i'd pick adieu over demolish 3 or not so i'm not really sure about that, but either way it is a stacked day

i just looked this one up and unfortunately it looks like it already got a sequel 19 years ago so it's out (would be competing with the claim i made directly above otherwise)

actually arguably i suppose you could count the shooting minigame in 1-2-Switch as a "sequel" to Wild Gunman if you're generous enough, and that would effectively be... around 42 or 43 years (if counting from the 1974 arcade release)

was going to guess bokosuka wars (1983-2016, so 33 years) but obviously this game would beat that. you could technically say Hebereke/Ufouria is up there as well as long as you put aside every spinoff (1991-2024, a little under 33 years)

And Penguin-kun wars also pretty high up there (1988-2017 from penguin wars 2 to the reboot, so 28 years)

i can't believe i didn't realise sog-gee was actually from david wise, i remember just leaving a note saying it felt like a clone of modern dkc in the nom impressions lol (also that i didn't want it to make bracket because some of the sounds made me think i was getting discord notifs. turns out it still does lmao). maybe i'll check out the rest of the soundtrack later

haven't picked up animal well (yet) since i've got things from last month to get on first but i figured i'd also add that ESA was definitely what i considered the best metroidvania of 2015 and also best indie metroidvania really ever up to that point rabi-ribi upstaged it for me a year later but i digress. brilliant game, i felt it was a shame it was so heavily overlooked compared to axiom verge, though given the game's difficulty it was understandable
