I'd consider the SNES controller to be minimum viable product, by modern standards (at least for games that don't need analog controls). It's not a bad controller, it's just been improved on in virtually every possible way.

Yeah, I'm always a little baffled by people including the NES in good controllers. Like it did the job, certainly, and it was good for its time, but it absolutely is not a good controller by any modern standards, even without considering its functional limitations.

I've never had any issues with my 360 controller aside from the wireless receiver failing. I'm still using it for PC. It works great.

The rubber wore off of parts of the left stick of my wired one, and the cable started losing connection if it was held at the wrong angle, which progressively got worse. I broke down and replaced it with a new Switch Pro controller last year. It worked fine for like 12-14 years of being my only PC controller, though, so I can't complain too much. I wore out the stick on one of my Wavebirds faster than that (though, to be fair, Smash is particularly hard on sticks).

I mean, you're getting at what I'm saying: In many cases, it doesn't work out because neither partner is able to handle a more delicate dating situation. That's not intrinsic to the concept, it's just that that's a maturity that many people lack and they don't necessarily exercise the restraint that should come with that lack of maturity.

Only the yellow stick and maybe the Z buttons were an issue.

Yeah, it's mostly just a bit dated. Slightly thicker arms, a C-stick with the same design as the left stick, L3/R3, and a ZL button, and it'd be pretty much perfect outside of the handful of games that require face button patterns that don't work well with its asymmetric layout.

"If you try to go out with women they will accuse you of something bad" is definitely incel talk.

And, to be fair, there are legitimate concerns attached to dating coworkers. But the extreme position and the attitude of "you can find other women" as though the goal is simply to find a partner for the sake of it and not to develop a relationship with an individual about whom you care deeply? Yeah, that's pretty textbook incel in how detached it is from the reality of actual romantic relationships. Especially where the majority of problems with workplace relationships are a consequence of either both parties being immature about it (in which case you can mitigate most of that risk by not being immature about it) or an abuse of power (in which case one party isn't entirely in control of the situation to begin with and suggesting "just don't do it" is pretty tone deaf).

Yes, things sometimes go badly even if you approach the matter sensibly and with the best intentions, but the attitude of "if a man even smiles at a female coworker he's just asking for HR to ruin his life" (which, let's be real, is what Zeus was saying even if he subsequently backtracked to say that women face the same concerns) is very obviously histrionic nonsense. Even the cases where it does go badly despite you doing nothing wrong, there's a fair chance that coworker was always going to make trouble for you regardless of whether or not you asked them out, because making it go badly when you've done nothing wrong reflects some degree of innate malice on their part. The vast majority of the time, provided you make an effort to ensure the other person is comfortable with the situation, you take "no" for an answer, and you recognize when it's time to break off a relationship instead of drawing it out to the point that you resent each other, it'll turn out fine, aside from maybe some short-term awkwardness.

Though, saying this, if you think you can't ensure the other person is comfortable, take "no" for an answer, and recognize when it's time to break off a relationship, then it's probably a good idea for you to not date coworkers (or anyone else that similarly can't distance themselves from you if desired). That's not because it's intrinsically a bad idea, though. It's because you aren't mature enough to handle a relatively delicate dating situation.

The N64 controller isn't even that bad. It's not good, either, but so many people take one look at it and immediately stop thinking after "how I hold?", seemingly completely missing that every single game's manual tells you exactly which grip to use (and even if you don't have the manual, it's not exactly hard to intuit from in-game tutorials which two arms it uses, plus there are only like three games that use anything other than centre+right). It's clearly outclassed by all subsequent controllers that use analog sticks, both functionally and ergonomically, but even now I don't particularly mind using it.

But yes, people praising Nintendo's controllers generally aren't including the N64 in there. It was clearly an early experiment that didn't take.

Yeah, I can imagine that'll be a very tough game for them to port.

The nature of the PS3's wonky architecture means that emulating it is difficult, so porting it would involve pretty much remaking the game from the ground up. All of the design elements would be the same, so it wouldn't be starting entirely from scratch, but it'd be a very technically demanding rerelease.

adjl

That takes the pressure off of you figuring out what to say, but it's worth keeping in mind that if they're asking you, there's a fair chance that it's either because they're genuinely interested or because they themselves aren't really sure how they'd answer and are trying to beat you to it to buy themselves some time/establish context for them to work from. If either of those is the case, pulling the Reverse card can be a little rude and may make them uncomfortable.

A tricky lesson to learn in dealing with social anxieties (of which this is an example) is that most people experience some degree of anxiety talking to new people. Exactly how much varies from person to person, as does the specific manifestation of it and how well they're able to mask it, but you're usually not going to be the only one in any given conversation with a stranger who feels a bit uncomfortable. Making effective small talk is as much about helping your conversation partner manage their discomfort as it is about overcoming your own. In a case like this, putting a bit of effort in to give an actual answer gives them something to build off of, which is a more comfortable position to be in than facing a totally open-ended question. On the flip side, they could certainly do the same to put you in a more comfortable position, and it's not wrong to feel a bit resentful when they choose not to and you have to pick up that slack, but if you make a point of taking the initiative instead of hoping that they will, you'll find that small talk generally goes better.

Tangentially, this is why icebreaker activities are so universally loathed but also kind of work: Everyone hates them because they make everyone uncomfortable. Because they make everyone uncomfortable, though, everyone knows that everyone else is also uncomfortable, and there's a paradoxical comfort in that because it takes away that pressure of "what if I screw up this introduction because I'm more uncomfortable than them?". They also take away the question of who has to take the initiative to get the conversation rolling by pre-defining exactly what both participants have to do.

Some of that is just plain snobbery, especially if they try to force that opinion on others or look down on them for disagreeing, but part of it's also a legitimate preference. If you like digging into a story and teasing out interesting subtext, a story that offers nothing beyond face value is inevitably going to be disappointing. That's not wrong, it's just a different approach to consuming media.

A little of column A, a little of column B.

This. There is often meaning behind authors' explicit intent, reflecting their subconscious biases, the context in which it was written, the impact it had on subsequent works, interpretations that are needed to recontextualize it for modern audiences, and other such subtextual analyses. It's not at all uncommon, though, to read way too far into things and make up a bunch of information that just straight up isn't there.

The tricky thing, though, is that you can't learn which is which well enough to come up with your own reasonable interpretations (as opposed to just getting the answer right on the test) without experiencing both the legitimate subtextual analysis and the bullshit. That means that, while a lot of literary deep dives in English class are largely nonsense, that nonsense can still help develop the skills, which is the ultimate goal of education. It's a tough balance to strike.

i haven't exactly looked for it to be fair, but i also don't think i've ever really seen anything in the way of astrobot merchandising. seems like a really weird missed opportunity given its popularity.

While they haven't been saying "you guys don't really want finite single-player games" as explicitly as they were in the late 00's/early 10's, many publishers (Sony included) are still very much trying to push live services and multiplayer games over games like Astro Bot. Merchandise would almost certainly sell (though where the game's popularity was a bit of a surprise to them, they didn't have that merchandise ready for launch and therefore missed the optimal window for selling it), but that would constitute investment into an IP that they don't really want to remain super-popular, since that creates demand for a type of game they don't want to make (which in turn generates ill will when they don't meet that demand).

Basically, Sony doesn't want Astro Bot to be popular. They don't want series where they tell investors "we spent $10 million on the previous game and made $40 million in sales, so we're looking to invest $10 million in another one," they want series where they say "the previous entry is making us $20 million a month in recurring revenue, and we're looking to invest in another game that will also do that." They don't want to make games that just sell well before everyone moves on. They want games that people play forever so they can keep extracting money from them.

That's not really a problem. "My tastes are kind of all over the place. Lately, I've been *appropriate verb*ing *thing*." If they've verbed Thing, you've got that to talk about. If they've heard of Thing but not verbed it, you've got that to talk about. If they haven't heard of Thing, you can either try to explain it or flip the conversation around to find out what things they like under the pretense of fishing for something they know that you can relate Thing to. That, in turn, either lets you talk about Thing after giving them a frame of reference by relating it to something they do know, or they'll name a different Thing that you've verbed and you can pivot into talking about that.

Failing any of those, you might just not have any tastes in common, and the conversation will probably fizzle out unless you can find something else to discuss.

Like you could have someone agree to not work for your direct competitors for the next 5 years or so (to prevent you from stealing company secrets and bringing them over), but you can't ban someone from ever working for your competition forever.

If they sneak it into the middle of a weekly ongoing series? Iffy, but still can be useful for something like conan that only really has a plot-heavy arc every could dozen or hundred episodes.

That's true, but I feel like recaps at the start of a season aren't all that common. That makes sense, but I'd also still be more than a little annoyed if I waited several years for a new season and the first episode of that season was entirely a recap. Taking a chunk out of that first episode to remind viewers how they got there is fair game, though.

I'm remembering, talking about this, that Wolf's Rain (I had to look it up to remember which series it was) had four consecutive recap episodes in a row at one point late in the series. That was horrible.

I mean, you're so close to confirming whether or not the mod count is displayed as an 8-bit integer. It'd be a shame to stop now. For science and whatnot.

Okay. I have good news and bad news. First, the bad news. The cartridge was again not working. I tried power cycling the console. I tried taking the cartridge out and putting it back in. I tried a different console. Errors every time. Now for the good news. I tried Bank. Bank worked. It read the cartridge no problem. My Pokmon were all alive and in tact. I decided that I did not know how long my 3DS would hold out in general. So I made the executive decision to move all of my Pokmon off the 3DS and into Home. I am disappointed that my Gen 6 ribbon hunting adventure was cut short so abruptly, and that I really didnt do any at all in Gen 7. But it is what it is, my Pokmon are alive and thats what matters. Everyone made it to Home safely and are in their proper spot in the box.

As far as I know, that error is specific to the cartridge, and only affects a relatively small handful of games. It doesn't indicate anything wrong with the system as a whole, so you probably don't have anything to worry about there.
