To be fair, those physical items still have a value and can be traded/sold for something. The typical Magic the Gathering booster pack is about $2.50 to $5 maybe depending on the set but certain rare cards were worth well more than that.

Not exactly historical but I enjoyed Guns, Germs, and Steel by Jared Diamond. It goes over why different regions in the world are now at different development level despite some having a headstart over others.

There's also The Circle by Dave Eggers which given our society nowadays, I can almost imagine it being an alternative version of how things could potentially be.

Well this is going to be a bit confusing since there already exist a character named Valkyrie. I don't recall her given an actual name in the movie and was simply referred to as Scrapper #142. She's A Valkyrie but wasn't named Valkyrie I thought.

Can any Marvel comic gurus shed light on this? Is Tessa's version replacing this Valkyrie or a completely different version?

EDIT: Looking at it a bit more, I guess it won't really matter. Seem Valkyrie is more of a title than a name? So there can be multiple characters named Valkyrie?

Gap insurance. Actual auto insurance is like 85. 100 combined, Then tax to bring it up to around 110 a month total.

That makes a lot more sense now, thank you for the clarification. $15 a month for the coverage you described was just baffling but $85 sounds a lot more reasonable.

EDIT: I need to stop skimming. Went back to read what you posted earlier and now see where you mentioned $110 a month with $200 deductible.

From the 2nd to 3rd year they will buy you a new vehicle or give you the original cost of your vehicle + 6% if they can't replace it with the same make, model, and year. So basically, since they'll never find a brand new version of a 2-3 year old car, you just get the cash (or a new vehicle worth less than that amount... So just take the cash).

After the 3rd year, you automatically stop paying for that insurance (which is around $15/month), and your vehicle is treated like any other insured vehicle now - if it gets totalled, you'll get the current value of it.

That sounds extremely generous, practically too generous. Which company is this? Like with any business, there gotta be some sort of profit for them. I wonder if they only cover areas with very low accident rates, or have a very small client base and said client needs a perfect record.

With the way you described it, you will pay only about $540 over three years. During the first three years you'll get back the amount you paid for the car, after that you'll get back just the market value.

Assuming my math is right, if only 1 out of 64 customers get into an accident in those first three years, the insurance will kinda break even. 64 x $540 = $35,000. 1 out of 64 is 1.56%. I honestly can't tell if that seems too generous of a count.

Dynalo posted...

It seems to be more or less the same thing, but the specific name (at least that my insurance uses) is "Waiver of Depreciation Insurance". Which sounds awfully fancy.

And yes, it's additional insurance on top of my regular auto insurance.

Now I am actually confused. What is the $15 per month for? Your actual auto insurance or your gap insurance?

That is literally what they have to do unless they actually have reason to think Im stealing.

As BADoglick suggest, being so bothered by something so trivial is not a cause for them to think you're a thief but at the same time it personally would make it me wonder, "What has that person got to hide that they can't spend several seconds for me to just take a glance?". Some nuisances are simply too minor to bother wasting my breath to complain about.

Not directly related but If I don't have the time or patience to spend several seconds for said attendant to do his/her job, I have other issues to deal with. It's like me having to spend another minute at a stop light because the car in front of me took too long to move. Is it annoying, yes. Is that one minute wasted going to ruin my day, of course not. I'll be a liar if I say I perfectly use every minute of my day and can't spare that minute.

Mead posted...
from my perspective you have to personally draw a line somewhere. Otherwise theyre gonna be patting you down before they let you leave their store.

I blame the thieves whose actions may have resulted in these checks being done. The store has every right to limit loss of profit from the actions of these individuals. I wouldn't even consider this "invasion of privacy".

I doubt it'll ever happen but what if by some bizarre chance it becomes a nationwide store policy and must be done in order to shop there? It is a private business so they have the right to refuse us if we don't oblige. On another note, a few stores in my area do have security guards checking the receipts and bags/cart. They just quickly scan the receipt and do a cursory glance into the cart. What's the f***ing point.

My guess is to catch the dumb thieves who make it too obvious. For example, having too many items in the bag/cart compared to what is listed on the receipt or obviously having $100+ worth of items but less than $20 shown on the receipt. No way will they have time to one-by-one check-off each item.

GeoMaggs posted...
Plus, there's nothing to steal after you leave the checkout lanes anyway, and there's usually someone else checking the cart while you put items up to scan.

I think it is more so for folks who use the self-checkout machines and attempting to sneak in some items with the ones they're paying for or not scanning all the items properly. I have read of stories of people re-scanning the same cheap item so the number of items scan matches the number of items in the bag despite there being a difference in cost.

They are managing said issue by ensuring to some degree the items in the bag/cart makes some sense with the items/price listed on the receipt. Mead posted...
Its my stuff, I already paid for it

Yes but how do they know you didn't sneak in some other item along with the items listed on the receipt? Much like anything that adds another step to what we gotta deal with, I blame those who take advantage of the system. In these cases, probably sneaking in expensive items along with the products they bought.

Checking the receipt isn't 100% fool proof but it might catch the occasional dumb thief who have $100+ worth of items in the bag/cart but less than $20 or too few items shown on the receipt.

Usually have attendants watching the transactions take place on their own screen

Depending on the store, some of those self-checkout areas have 8-10 machines and only one attendant. Large stores like Wal-Mart would probably have to have a second or maybe even third attendant and I doubt they'll do that.

Sorry, I have been using the word "personally" a whee bit much to just refer to what my stance is on anything.

I don't consider it disrespectful to myself but I do feel it is disrespectful to what this country stands for as a whole. For all the wrongdoings that is allowed to continue I still feel we're better off than most in other parts of the world and that in itself is something to be grateful and respectful of.

That's not to say this justifies the wrongdoings though. Those issues should still be addressed but I feel some are approaching this with the idea of "two wrongs make a right". Which is why I also feel the kneeling acts are drawing attention away from what said players are protesting for.

All this being said, I do feel them kneeling is at least drawing a lot of attention. Had they protested in any other way I feel it would not have draw in as much attention and I told this to my coworkers who are against them kneeling. Some do not like it but at least it is drawing their attention.

I heard that build might be boring since it is mostly auto-attacks but at the same time seem when built properly, they simply can't die.

On the flip side, I know a game like DA:Origins can take awhile if I try and do everything. Maybe I'll just do the DLCs first for the bonus items and get start a new game. Based on the stats of the bonus items from the DLCs, are they only overpowering at the start of a new game when your stats are lower?

This in my opinion. Different situations calls for different attitude/approach. I can only assume/hope social skills are part of their training. At the same time I can understand cops have their own lives and possibly families to be concern about. I wouldn't want them approaching every situation like they're walking on egg shells only to get hurt in the process because said culprit was a real threat.

I could but this topic reminds me of the Poltergeist clown. That I would actually find a bit disturbing.

Thank you for the very detailed insight, ParanoidObsessive. Pity the three games don't connect that well. Despite whatever issues I had with Mass Effect 3 kinda making your choices in the first two games not matter, DAII and DA:I seems to take the cake in the regards.

(And honestly, the whole "Dragon Age Keep" thing is pure bulls***. They easily could have incorporated Varric's whole prelude and presetting story flags into the game itself akin to how Mass Effect: Genesis worked

I thought that was strange as to why that wasn't incorporated into the game.

About the only reason I can't say that DA:I is the worst BioWare game ever made is because Mass Effect: Andromeda exists.

Funny, I added that to my Origin wishlist since it is also on sale but am hesitant to get it. I might just do it for the gameplay someday and hope the story is at least tolerable. I can't recall if it was you or someone else that blamed the fans for how DA:I and ME:A turned out. In that the developers tried to half-n-half it by doing a new thing while trying to introduce old elements as well. But instead of best of both worlds we get some abomination of the two.

I'll admit, after ME3, I wanted more adventures and whatnot with Sheppard but can understand that would just restrict the writers on what they can do. Kinda the same for DA2. Refocusing on the Grey Warden would just limit the writers on where else they can take the story to and with such an enriching world that they've created, it would be a waste to not pursue that other content.

That bad eh? Kinda thought Inquisition would be a mix of DA:O and DAII.

Thank you for the additional responses. Is the story told by Verric via Dragon Age Keep sufficient then to catch me up with the story? For the most part I do recall what happened but just kinda felt I should at least hammer out the various DLCs/expansion before I move forward. Of course I could just go backward later and finish Awakening last.

I personally would prefer adoption anyway if we both agree on it and can financially and emotionally handle it.

Letters From Iwo Jima

Speaking of war movies, I'm reminded of My Way. I thought that was a really good one and based on true events.

Name one foreign movie where the main characters aren't white that is good.

Singham, Battle Royale, Ringu, War of the Arrows, and The Thieves are some films that come to mind that aren't martial art orientated. Of course good is relative. Rotten Tomatoes has some of these at 70-80% but I personally enjoyed them. Battle Royale I thought was a good watch but probably not something I can stomach watching twice. Feels like Hunger Games on steroids. There's also the original 1998, The Ringwhich I personally never saw but have been told is much better than the 2002 version.
