One of my favorite concepts is always "Donkey Kong 64, but every Kong is controlled by a different person". Because it's just stupid enough for me to always be hooked on and DK64 is a trainwreck to watch in the best way. But I will gladly watch any of the three suggested to death.

Damn those are some nice, crisp, sexy audio levels though. So clear and lovely, mnnnnnn. Background track seems a bit low compared to the sound effects but that's my only note.

Insofar as I can tell, the youtube auto-detect bot looks for things that it can identify to an artist. Something like, say, the MadWorld soundtrack is gonna get a claim, whereas something like, say, Dragon Quest isn't. A lot of it has to do with the length of the included song clip, unbroken and unedited, and its volume level. Youtube's unfortunately very inconsistent with it. On the plus side, you will get the claims very easily and very quickly from the auto-detect, so it's something rather easy to change in post if the vid's large enough.

But there are plenty of game channels with very blatant and unbroken game bgm (Alpharad comes to mind pretty quickly) and the autodetect's been pretty slow, so yeah I'd say go for it.

I feel like one of the best things you can do for a channel is get people talking about you. My channel ( https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCJr7DrVt9FEQjys6mWP8Y1w ) was dead in the water and abandoned until we got some coverage from a larger channel in QuintonReviews. Since then, we were able to get a fairly solid following since the initial surge, but that's petered out since then, despite healthy subscriber numbers. What I've been doing is networking with other YouTubers who also do game analysis. Often their discord servers will allow for self-promotion (as we're all in the same boat we know what it's like), and just generally allow for personal networking. That strategy has gotten me several people who consistently comment, which is just as important for feeding the Youtube algorithm. Collaboration is equally important, and I have a video in the works for April Fools' Day featuring multiple personalities that'll be easy for them to feature. If more than one head of the twitter hydra is advertising you, it becomes a lot easier to be seen. And if you make friends in the process, that's more than exceptionally helpful. I tend to start to leave comments consistently on those people's videos as well, to make it all the more enticing and easy to mutual support.

Otherwise, I find that to "stand out", taking a hard stance on something really helps. Play a game that you really like that people don't, or even better, play a game that people don't like that you really do. One of the strongest videos I did for a (now defunct) channel was playing through all of Eggman's levels in Sonic Adventure 2 and defending them as good (except Sand Ocean). Some of the most ineffective videos I've done were analysis of the music in Castlevania Pachislot games. It's a gamble, and you've gotta cast a wide net, but it's more than doable.

*cracks neck* Here we go...

-Add a checklist for Blue Coins, showing you how many you've collected in a level and the locations of those you've gotten on the level map.

-Utilize the rocket and turbo nozzles in boss fights. Odyssey's proven that this could've worked and the Wiggler boss fight proves that they can just throw bosses into the overworld like it's no big deal. Keeps them from being entirely superfluous. For suggestions on this, requiring the turbo nozzle for a piantissimo race would be nice, or make piantissimo checkpoint-based like the sled race in Banjo-Kazooie to use more of the level geometry. Or require the rocket nozzle to jump above the large chain chomp in Pianta Village to play a matador-esque game with it as opposed to it being "exactly the same as the first mission but bigger".

-Reduce getting to that damn lillypad mission to a single boat for Yoshi to travel on; getting to the level in a five minute long unskippable sequence is unbearable.

-Remove all spin tiles from the casino. Hell, remove the casino entirely.

-Make the angles that you're shot from the pachinko machine at based on the movement option Mario uses to get in (i.e. spin jump, sideways jump, slide). Makes it a little puzzle instead of luck. Standard jump in results in it being actual luck, but now there's a trick to it.

-Have the final Bowser fight utilize all three nozzles. I don't mind the bathtub, but it's entirely about getting from place to place uselessly. Add some platforming in between each instead of the same 'walk around THIS part of Bowser's magic hot tub'.

-Turn the watermelon mission into a race mission with all cataquacks removed, so it's about getting the watermelon down in the shortest time possible without it breaking rather than pure survival.

-Make Noki Bay not shit. Needs a 100% facelift outside of the fact that like half of its shines don't even take place in the damn level. Too much verticality in a level without the rocket nozzle and just boring design.

-Make Shadow Mario missions separate from the required order of missions, and simply trigger once the player reaches 10 shines, 20 shines, etc. Keeps it in line with Mario 64 wherein you'd need approximately 70 to fight the final boss.

Teemo I buy as a utility-based 2/week, give him some items for character upgrades that contribute stuff and he'd be solid as a utility stun guy. He's only a pointbreaker in practice, but that's all he needs to be and he does it in a non-ineffectual manner.

I'd take him over non-dreamy Luigi at least, who is my barometer of "does this guy deserve to be a 2/week". And I'm a guy with high Mario respect in general.

Big the Cat and his magic lake were robbed.

The point I'm trying to make (and failed to, sorry) being that supplementary material is helpful for specific techniques. Aigis's stupid button thing is good for showing her accuracy, Naoto's Arena moveset is like "oh hey she has a shotgun that she uses in a super and also it inflicts silence I guess?", Mario RPG gives Mario actual fire spells beyond throwing baby fireballs at people.

The Ultimax argument I was trying to make for Yu is that he kills something actually notable 1 Vs 1 without a team or power of friendship bullshit (which is completely counter-intuitive to his character and God I hate Ultimax's story but it happened) which is currently a more impressive kill than what Joker has, as well as more fighting experience in general. It's not going to mean much, but it's going to mean, say, a little more than a terribly-written metaphor on how cool Snake is from a MGS novelization.

Ignoring Arena is like ignoring Mario RPG or ignoring Umineko as a whole if we put in one of their models based on the fighting game. It gives something quantifiable to RPG defenses and sensibilities on high schoolers and gives actual durability and reaction time ideas (i.e. Naoto being able to survive a sword up her back, the Aigis button thing, anything related to Labrys). It's the difference between someone like Akuma, who has valid showings people accept, and Nightmare, who fluxuates between a 5/week and Executioner Smough depending on who you ask.

Fortune I have no idea why we don't just have Ocelot and give him the same tech he has from MGS2. Major Ocelot was a bust insofar as respect goes, he needs something to boost him. Boom, cover Fortune's exact niche on a better and more popular character.

Metroid I feel we have plenty of hunters and weird creatures we can give a spot to. Like Hell, I feel like "Metroid Queen who constantly shits out baby Metroids" would be easier to quantify than Dark Samus, and would at least fill a nice niche. I appreciate Dark Samus because she tries to do things differently than others in high tier... phazon just sucks. And for "get someone TOO BIG", I mean, Kraid is right there. Hi Kraid.

I still consider Joker at the 4/week level unless you give him his ultimate persona with endgame parameters (which is... pretty much the same with all Persona protags, just Joker specifically). Yu has better showings due to fighting game canon wins, but fighting game wins are flimsy at best when gauging respect as opposed to island punching. Joker has a lot more niches he fills, but I feel like it'd be an uphill struggle to take him to win over Yu 1 Vs 1 unless people buy "man with gun shoots child, gun wins". Joker feels like the Ezio of the 4/week tier of "is decent straight up, is fantastic with terrain advantage".

I'd argue that a lot of the P5 cast is on the cusp of the 4/week barrier though, which is better than the previous casts being generally mid to low 3/weeks and robots and a dog.

http://mercsce.pbworks.com/w/page/117777735/Joker

Made this model as a base to make him decently widespread a bit after I beat the game. Feel like it plays with Joker pretty well.

Tali has the ability to generate drones at least in ME2, right?

Regardless, I would prefer to see Tali/Mordin/Thane as a 5/week instead of holding all of the ME guys up in the 6/week bracket. Garrus is at the unfortunate sweet spot where he's not quite at the Shepard/Legion level of skill and not at the Wrex/Liara/Jack level of bringing something unique to the table, but his feats are WAY too good to drop him lower. Having a squadmate in a lower pool might at least create some diversity for the series.

FF4 party team needs a damage sponge, as it doesn't have the time to use its huge-ass versatility to counter the raw power of Diablo + Samus + ANIME GIRLS. Throw the Lich King in Kain's place as him + a party to buff him and for him to super undead fun times with and you got a match.

Sorry for being too slow, but yeah I would also vote for Zombie Narukami's Undead Harem. My deciding issues comes in the terrain not favoring the game that the Nova Force wants to play compared to the challengers. As I recall, The Patroit has its own armor-piercing properties (I recall The Boss shooting a downed aircraft and it blowing up despite her hitting the main shell), and The Boss being focused on disabling body parts augmented with Super Wesker Powers gives her an edge of "thou shall not fire gun" that the enemy team doesn't have the immediate 'get off me' tools to handle. The fact that Team Narukami is actively strengthened by existing in the mines makes Terra's flight a practical non-issue, and the mid-range focus of Narukami's team leads me to believe that they'd go for a full offensive as opposed to waiting it out. There's no real time for optimal positioning due to the speed advantage of The Boss.

http://mercsce.pbworks.com/w/page/111838975/Captain%20Falcon

Made this build of Captain Falcon for an early game release. Allows for what I feel is the optimal form (MAYBE change his terrain to Mute City from F-Zero X? Or Mario Kart 8 as that's the best form of Mute City but I mean Falcon wasn't in the game so) of Falcon - allows for a weak presence in lowbie whilst having HIGH OCTANE FALCON YES YES still as an option for his character. Essentially the niche that Zero-Suit Samus was meant to fill, only with (I hope) Base Falcon having more respect than ZSS and Blue Falcon having less than actual Samus.

Speaking on Damus... can we not? Phazon is the worst material to hype and research (speaking as someone who showered buckets of phazon hype down in draftmerx) and her non-Prime 3 showings are honestly kinda pitiful, and Prime 3 mucks up durability due to Hypermode being a thing. The only reason I say "let's not wait for Prime 4" is that 1.) she's VERY dead by the end of Prime 3, and I know "Nintendo villain" never dies but I'm really not a fan and 2.) there are more interesting Metroid reps in the Hunters from... well, Prime Hunters that are a lot more defined and fill nicer niches. None as strong as Damus, of course, but there's more potential there for more interesting scenarios than "hey you wanna talk about SPACE RADIATION for two hours?"

Honestly Bowser's biggest failing is if people give him durability respect or not, which again hurts in the paydown system because he's an AMAZING tank (potentially) in a 3/week max world. From there his utility comes in brute strength (that Odyssey definitely helps him with easy and obvious showings for now) and his never-argued utility - dude's got amazing Crowd Control options with Mario RPG and Inside Story spells.

Here's my general suggestions on where The Bowz should draw his respect from:

-Odyssey base
-Mario 64 abilities (gives him short-range teleport and dashing for movement options)
-Mario RPG spells
-Bowser's Inside Story

Keep it at that, and keep him AWAY from the clown car, he doesn't need it and it doesn't add anything to him other than a weird potential minion spam tactic that's already covered by BiS. He loses basically nothing by ditching the 'Smash 4' tag that plagued models since Smash Bros is cancer to durability showings. Gives him a niche as an AoE focused tank in lowbie that can get to the battle, stall, and be a pain to get rid of as more effective and faster mercs (spellcasters, faster fighting game characters, etc.) can actually take out threats. And then Giga for damn solid synergy with teambuilding.

BBAMM is honestly a bit ridiculous, and I'd add in that he can only target mercs of an equal upkeep or less to his linked merc, give an upgrade that the pool is expanded to within two gold per week. I may be biased because he was combo'd with SLAYER OF WORDS AND WINNER OF ELIMINATION MATCHES, BIG THE CAT, but I feel giving him an upkeep focus keeps him balanced whilst still being combo'd with guys like Algus.

In-battle, Auron's one of those guys who is a "staple". You have him, you have the general offensive front covered in low... unless there are paydowns, and there are always paydowns. The paydown system hurts lowbie slow guys like him the most, as what are formidable defenses and attacks at 3/week are easily run over by the Alucards and M Bisons and Nightmares of the world. It's my opinion that lowbies need to have a niche in order to survive in a paydown world, and Auron has... breaks, I guess? If he can get them off?

A solid example of a character who elevates her original material and was best left in it. As someone who felt 'above' the rest of the Mushroom Kingdom crew, bring her down for parties and kart races has kinda left a bad taste in my mouth. She added an element of mysticism and wonder to the Galaxy games that's kinda lost nowadays. Being the right combination of both annoying to play and annoying to fight in Smash Bros also contributes a great deal. Even if this track is probably the best "sad background music" I can think of off of the top of my head.

So gentle. I'd want a cradle to play it.

Also Vegeta can get a solid 8/10. Always one of the best parts in whatever he's in, and his almost self-destructive flaws are always played up and amusing. Best of the original cast in Battle of Gods as well, which does amazing things with every character worth a damn.

I just prefer my horrendous murderers in the more wisecracking variety if his prey is going to be so bad about it. Taking quite some time to develop his identity takes a while. Additional point for a solid motivation and for Jason X being legitimately amusing, but sound design can only take you so far out of the apathy zone.

Wrex - 7.5/10. Good when he gets the chance to be, but his questionable status of how alive he is at any given point in a sequel hurts his overall impact on a story. It speaks volumes that he's one of the one reasons I'll replay ME1, but I don't think he's handled all that well mechanically past that. Always interesting when he shows up and fun, just needed a little extra push in, say, ME2 to get to "fantastic".

The best word to describe Bugs is probably "consistency". He plays a very similar role in most of his shorts and, thus, his highs and lows aren't as wild and varied as the rest of the Looney Tunes cast, with Daffy, Coyote, Foghorn, etc. having excellent moments but also being able to strike out completely with jokes.

Some quick ones looking down the list:

Donkey Kong - 10. He taught me how to read, care for him too much from a developmental standpoint AND is Smash main.

Bowser - 8.5. Fallen off in recent years from his heyday.

Han Solo - 6. Is cool as ice and absolutely makes some of the highs of the original trilogy. Tries to do the same with Force Awakens, doesn't totally pay off.

Cena - 7. I stopped watching WWE during Ruthless Aggression through early PG, so I missed most of his SuperCena run. These days, consistently high-quality performer who's worked magic on the mic with Miz, Styles, and against the cardboard cut-out that is Reigns. Will always respect the highs of a performer over their lows - otherwise Triple H would be insufferable instead of great.

Poseidon - 4. He gets cucked a lot and kind of screwed over Athens majorly.

Scarecrow - 6.5. "Solid" probably sums up his appearances. Personally I prefer Jervis as Bruce's cerebral-messing antagonist, just because I prefer happy/bright surrealism to Scarecrow's darker elements and find fear more limiting than the delusions of fantasy and escapism.

Akinator - 2.5. Passing fad, was fun. Bottom tier genie, though.

Cloud Strife - 7. His arc is solid, he's allowed to have his funny moments, and he's genuinely charming. Just wish they'd allow absence to make the heart grow fonder instead of him showing up in another form. I miss when he was charming.

Leon Kennedy - 5.5. He's a good protag for his series, striking probably the best balance between funny and legitimately badass. Will personally always prefer Barry for comedy, and I find too much of his character is wrapped up in Ada whilst his villain he should be bantering with gets killed off. Stops Leon from having a proper dynamic like Wesker has with Jill and Chris.

Darth Vader - 6. Unmatched in presence, but even as a kid I found any actual conflict between him and a hero uninspired outside of the Luke fight in Empire. Wish the obsession angle with Luke was played up more, as mentioned at the start of Empire.

Hey guys, long time no... anything from me.

So a friend of mine and I have been hard at work making some videos on game design. Basically started as I've kept hitting my head against the wall trying to get into the voiceover industry and video games are still a huge part of my life. This board kind of infinitely broadened my horizons past "what's available on Nintendo consoles", even just going through it passively and following contest seasons and various ranking topics, so... I dunno, it's not like this is "giving back" or anything, but just a series of video essays on how a specific level or objective in a game shows off a certain concept and how that could be applied to other games.

So... yeah. This is partially whoring out as we hit the 1K sub mark on YouTube and I no longer feel like it's an incredibly desperate ploy for attention (more a slightly desperate ploy) and partially a "thank you for letting me lurk for years and teaching me about video games, here's various posts I probably owe". Feedback and discussions and junk are always welcome. I just want to be more engrossed in this and talk things over with people; design's always been fascinating to me and I feel good to have something concrete to share.

We've made a couple, so I'll just list some of the more recent ones. No real obligation just if any subject piques your interest. Still a bit of a Nintendo slant to it, but there's definite discussion of other titles in relation to those games in it, and we're not completely narrow-minded in a Nintendrone mindset.
