Might actually get this one. Seems less complex than their past games barring FighterZ.

MGS2 was Liquid returning from the grave to possess Ocelot.

MGS4 was "well it was psychotherapy and nanomachines to convince the Patriots that he's Liquid."

Oh no!

I'm in kimawim the first too, is it "that bad"?

Not at all! Kiwami is an 8/10.

It's a great game overall. But I feel it lacks the impact of Yakuza 0 for a few reasons. It lacks a few of the best mini-games, like dancing, hostess club, and the real estate thing. I also prefer the battle system revolving around the 3 instead of shoehorning Dragon into it right at the start.

Mr. Shakedown was more exciting than Majima Everywhere.

However, you will still love the writing and subquests of Kiwami. It's more like the "lesser" in a series that, so far, I haven't played a bad game in yet.

The *only* game I felt iffy about was Fist of the North Star: Lost Paradise. It uses the older Yakuza engine (read: Kiwami) but the traveling around the wasteland and no taxis really made it feel like a bunch of unneeded padding. 7/10 game but still solid thanks to excellent combat, solid mini-games, and subquests.

Right now, it's like 0 > Kiwami 2 > Judgment > Kiwami > Lost Paradise.

I'm going to start Yakuza 3 soon.

Yeah arcades are super big in Japan to this day.

A major reason why I miss conventions. MomoCon and Ichibancon invited Tokyo Attack which had Initial-D, DDR and all of its similar games, Taiko no Tatsujin, Rhythm Tengoku, and so much more.

Not only are cons absent during COVID but TokyoAttack closed their business too. So even when cons come back they won't be there to supply cabinets anymore.

Oh dear God Ys II sucked.

It was marginally better than the first thanks to the magic system. It gave you more battle options and an escape system.

It still forced level grinding especially in the end dungeon. Easy mode in the re-releases, like Chronicles, helped marginally.

The worst part was the amount of warp-padding and backtracking over the course of the entire final dungeon. Absolutely preposterous.

1) PS4
2) Nintendo Switch
3) 3DS
4) GBA
5) DS
6) SNES
7) PS2
8) GameCube
9) PS1
10) N64

I'm not sure these are really ordered. There's so many quality systems it's really hard to sort favorites.

But PS4's definitely my favorite. Switch is up there just because of Smash online but also the selection of JRPGs, Wii U ports, multiplayer games, and single-player titles is extravagant. It has DQXI which is saying a lot.

All 3 Nintendo handhelds feature any variation of Metroid, Castlevania, Fire Emblem, as well as Pokemon, Mother 3, and your usual sort of Nintendo classics. Also visual novels like Zero Escape and Ace Attorney and a plethora of JRPGs.

SNES definitely has a monopoly on solid titles. But I also think outside of your usual suspects it lacks a degree of quality multiplayer gaming. Excels in side-scrollers and JRPGs but I feel generations ahead of it beat it in everything else.

PS2 for the same reason. Remasters render the original library largely obsolete if you're comparing versions of each game. But Persona 3 FES, the last PS2 title I beat (last year) is the best game I played on the system.

GameCube for Smash, Fire Emblem, Wind Waker, and Resident Evil.

PS1 for MGS, SotN, FF, Tales. Tons of JRPGs here. Used to play Bushido Blade and Jet Moto with my cousins too. Spyro 1 was a true classic.

N64 for Zelda and Paper Mario.

I wouldn't dispute any console out there beats these. I think the PS3 had potential that Sony squandered for the first 4 years before it started catching up. It still had a limited multiplayer selection but did manage to tie it up in the end thanks to getting a ton of Xbox 360 timed exclusives. Multiplats like Dark Souls and exclusives like Demon's Souls and Tales of Xillia helped it out..

Sorting consoles by favorites is hard which is why I almost never rank them save for the first one.

Great story, soundtrack, spritework, and battle system. I only disliked the fairly high encounter rate and a couple of times you may get lost. I disliked the Floating Continent partly for this reason.

You might also find a couple of difficult bosses depending on how well you prepare your setup. I was new to RPGs at the time I played this so I didn't exactly know how to manage my Espers. Look up a guide if you start getting stuck.

Other than that, enjoy your game!

Oh, one more thing. When you're escaping the Floating Continent, select Wait for Shadow. Just stand there and he will show. Otherwise, he's gone permanently.

Even though the intro when you first start the game says that Ganondorf broke free from the Sacred Realm.

Even though you fucking meet Ganondorf himself with enough shown to know it's fucking him after the tower, which is before the first fucking dungeon.

At no point does anyone who knows who Ganondorf is ever get the idea that Ganondorf is not in the game. And then you have multiple encounters with him. Some even before the halfway point. How the fuck is it a spoiler that Ganondorf is in Wind Waker?!

Yes, I do because I love Christmas or, I suppose more specifically, yuletide.

I enjoy the cold weather, the culture behind Christmas trees, goodwill, and people being holly and jolly towards one-another. I love the family culture and the point of spending time with loved ones and close friends. I feel like it's a great way for people to end the year when they do nice things for one-another.

Believe it or not, I actually do not care much for the Christ-mas songs since I'm agnostic and all-too-aware that Christians stole from pagan culture. But I am definitely a Santa guy and love all the stories about Santa, Rudolph, Frosty, etc.

Plus, it's great for the economy. Electronics and games are put on sale for a reasonable price. Can't argue with that either!

But all in all, it's just a great excuse to get-together with friends and family.

Persona creating waifu culture in JRPGs had more to do with that than Xenoblade did. I still don't even know what you're crediting it with impacting other than being its own success story.

Persona and Fire Emblem both definitely helped with the waifu culture. I think with Persona it crept up with every entry. Smash helped capitalize on the market that grew with the release of FE Awakening and Fates.

Xenoblade definitely didn't help with waifu culture.

https://i.ytimg.com/vi/nQIzDM2Oxv4/maxresdefault.jpg

On that note, it reminds me of how Definitive Edition went the Radiant Historia 3DS route and just redid all the character art to stand out to a broader audience.

MZero posted...
dude these are the only people who played Xenoblade so I don't know what you're trying to argue here

Well, I was always under the impression Xenoblade helped start a boom to broaden the horizons for JRPG fans. Perhaps I gave it too much credit although it was at least a progenitor leading up to the more popular choices that followed it.

With that being said, you can better believe many more people are playing Xenoblade now than 10 years ago. That's part of the effect coupled with Nintendo's marketing of the latter titles and tripled with Shulk's inclusion in Smash. Nintendo fans influence one-another to try a new game and the fanbase grows because of it.

As for everything else, that was just from strong marketing because publishers like Atlus, NIS, XSeed, and so forth found an audience to capitalize on.

Judgment on PS4. It's a Yakuza spin-off which is still more or less the same as any other Yakuza game. But it's a crime drama so you're searching for clues and even presenting evidence not unlike an Ace Attorney title.

I don't even understand what you're trying to say Xenoblade did. Are you arguing that RPGs suddenly became extremely popular in the west because Xenoblade sold a million copies on a dying system? AAA RPGs were still in bad shape for like 5 years after Xenoblade came out, so it had no impact on that. Niche RPGs still occupy the same space that they occupied before Xenoblade. I don't even understand the logic for giving it credit for Persona or Fire Emblem.

To be fair, Fire Emblem: Awakening did in fact revive the series.

https://www.ign.com/articles/2015/06/24/fire-emblem-awakenings-success-ultimately-saved-the-franchise

2016 carried that momentum forward with Fates. Thanks to Nintendo's incredible marketing, it became the best-selling title in the series.

https://www.dualshockers.com/fire-emblem-three-houses-best-fire-emblem-sales-ever/

Persona 5 became a cultural phenomenon. To deny its popularity and how it targeted, and succeeded with, a broader audience would be absurd.

https://goombastomp.com/persona-5-ffvii/

This thread discusses how the genre got its push over the last decade. 2017 was specifically a major year.

https://www.reddit.com/r/JRPG/comments/fnckcd/genre_revival_and_2020/

The only way to assume there was never a JRPG revival is to pretend nothing has changed since the 2000s. And the only way to assume that they've never changed in success is to live in an echochamber, such as a forum that has celebrated the genre long before they picked up popularity outside of said forum. Naturally, being around people who celebrate these games make them sound more popular than they actually are.

The fact of the matter is, several games and series of the past decade, specifically around the mid-late 2010s, revitalized the genre. Even if it wasn't Xenoblade, it at least was a precursor to that role.
