Primus - Spegetti Western
Ooh that's dirty. I like dirty. This would probably be better served if Les didn't wait a minute to start playing since he's kind of the focus of the groove but once he's on it's all hot sauce. I'm all about the rawness, the id rock, the bassists' turf. It's not pretty but it's far from bland.

Every Time I Die - We'rewolf
Sufficiently gnarly, surprisingly rowdy rock that evokes the mythic biker bar of the great american southwest. It's a desert vibe. Extra points for a cowbell count-in, that's how you want to kick off a week. Truthfully I can't help but feel like a phony listening to this because I don't have any tattoos or piercings but I still enjoy this type of aggro shitkickery. Title is awful though.

Crash Kings - Dressed to the 9's
Same jukebox as the last song but 35 years prior, you can actually hear how big the singer's hair is. It gives me the strange sense that a chorus is missing, as if it goes from verse to bridge but instead of a chorus it interpolates the verse to a different song without really arriving there by design. Might just be me. Either way the instrumental work is spicy and the individual sections are fun enough for me to not really care about their logical flow so much.

La Dispute - Woman (In Mirror)
The spritely drumming elevates this slacker-indie meditation to something that might be altogether moving if I were capable of producing genuine human emotion. It's a real toe-tapper for a white guy solemnly looking out a window on a rainy day while a Wes Anderson movie plays back in his mind. Yeah I don't *have* to write up all these songs using a framework of mocking cultural references but I'm gonna try anyways.

My Twin Sister - Blush
Valentines Day jam right here, this song oozes sex. Legit smooth jazz with a modern vocal style and playful production, strings right out of Bacharach's playbook over a relaxed shuffle. And that sax at the end, by god what am I in Blade Runner? Okay there's the reference. Very seductive pick Mcflubbin you have been on a roll in my book.

Frank Zappa - Night School
Entirely too noodly for it's own good but it's better than the theme from Night Court. Some interesting modulations, I dig the progression at 1:14 and the juicy half-dim chords at 2:57/3:05. Not into the synth patches so much but what is Zappa without his sense of musical whimsy? You gotta appreciate the guy's combination of audacity and studiousness.

Sturgill Simpson - Welcome to Earth (Pollywog)
Grand, sweeping arrangement gets hijacked by upbeat sunflower bop as sentimental father attempts to earn the coveted "best dad ever" mug. It's the sweetest thing ever, maybe it musically veers into car commercial territory a bit but it's cool to have a strictly country-guy voice used in a different way like this.

Joanovarc - White Trash
Heck yeah ladies stop grindin' that pole and move on up! Sparing use of the bVI adds a neat flair (you know which chord) but otherwise it's a pretty standard rock number. It just sits there inoffensively. I wouldn't kick it off my radio but then again I don't listen to the radio.

Set It Off - The Haunting
Decidedly not a Valentines Day jam right here, guy sounds kinda bitter. It's a Shad pick so it's real theatrical and every word is enunciated perfectly and it's bookended by a musicbox. Yea, on these three principles rests the Church of Shad. I don't attend the Church of Shad but I admire its purity. There are a couple of unexpected moves here but overall I'd put this in the same boat as the Joanovarc song. Not my thing bro sorry!

Rise Against - Halfway There
That damn snare kills it for me. Sometimes a drum kit just rubs me the wrong way and no amount of -core can save it. All the riffs turn to whiffs, the whole thrust is busted. Admittedly I wouldn't be super into this flavor regardless but that particular timbre makes this like a dead zone to me.

Royal Blood - Out of the Black
Wild video, really elevated the tune with the kinetic Superjail! style animation. It's a propulsive, fun song to begin with but the video brought it over the top. This would be pick of the (bi)week if I were in another, heavier mood. It doesn't even do anything special it's just a solid banger.

Protest the Hero - Skies
I'd really have to be in another mood for this one. Technically proficient and sprawling and it all just blows right by me, I feel like an old person in a wind tunnel listening to this. Or like it's set to 1.25x speed as the default. Or they got lost in the sauce of digital dexterity and forgot to deliver a hook. Or maybe I just need a few espressos before I can appreciate. I don't know how to identify the disconnect, but it's there.

The Roots - What They Do
Lasa - I think it's a headphones thing because these verses sounded crystal clear on my phillips. The Roots' instrumental work here is smooth is ever, restrained and flavorful even in the end jam. Black Thought is always has an understated control and Saadiq's voice sprinkles a little seasoning in between. I should listen to these guys way more than I do, they gel so perfectly and have an admirably holistic approach to their craft. Good selections this week!

The Go! Team - Junior Kickstart
Not since have GY!BE have I heard such a promising act with an exclamation point in the middle of their name. I'll take all the shaker and brass! they got. This is so rowdy and lo-fi it's like a garage big band. Why does that harmonica work so well? Tough choice between this and the Glass Animals song. Sweet changeup at 2:30. I'm all over the lively percussion throughout too, there's not really a weak point anywhere in the song.

The Ready Set - Killer
It makes me sad when these composite vids have a guy who plays all these instruments but only wears one jacket. I like costume changes! This type of music isn't my bag (vocals especially) and as much as I appreciate people playing real instruments I get the sense that I'm seeing more actual drumming than I'm hearing - are they even mic'd? I guess it's not impressive to film yourself clicking squares in a DAW even if it ends up sounding cleaner. Not a bad effort but this cup of tea ain't for me.

Chronixx - Skakin' Sweet
Listened about three times before realizing it's 'skakin' and not 'shakin'.Not sure how much I can trust Urban Dictionary on this one. Nice background vocals in the second half and vamp at the end but overall it's the standard boilerplate reggae progression and doesn't generate a whole lot of interest with it. The production is decent and I think it's good to have more of this flavor in the weekly lineups but this track in particular doesn't strike me as special within its genre.

Edge of Sanity - Enigma
Thrashy/deathy bits work for me as Dark Souls grind accompaniment, but I thought the whole thing could have used more of the soft part that sounded like the Disney Tarzan soundtrack as silly as it was. Good amount of changeups but none of the individual sections really stuck with me on a riffing level, vocals were of the mostly indecipherable variety and just sort of added to the distortion. I wouldn't seek it out again anytime soon.

Ben Folds - Kalamazoo
Haven't heard this release despite supposedly being a Ben Folds fan. First two minutes are middling but get more convincing as they go along, then the disco section breaks out and the song wins me over with the BeeGees stings and piano groove all panned out left to right, and the final little build of the coda seals the deal. I can't help but enjoy Folds' plaintive sensibilities and vocal character. His songs have the grilled cheese aesthetic, he'd have to work at it to screw it up.

Deep Forest and Peter Gabriel - While the Earth Sleeps
Damn this sounds like a prototype of The Knife, lots of energy and unsusually wholesome for a Mycro pick - it even stays in 4/4. That opening sample is hype, I relished every splash of that as well as the punchiness of the synth bass recap at the end, that was a great development. Excellent production throughout really, everything pops.

Glass Animals - Season 2, Episode 3
Is it the one where Jerry buys a seude jacket? The one where Data pretends to be Sherlock Holmes on the holodeck? The one where Arya saves Jaqen H'gar? Doesn't matter because this is a hot contender for song of the week. It all sounds so big and dreamy, as if the listener has been shrunk. Some sick rolls on the e. piano, breathy vox in the chorus have a wistful appeal, swooping bass is dirty. Instant replay worthy, song is catchy as fuck.

Ben Caplan - Down to the River
This guy looks like he's nineteen under that beard, it would be hard to take seriously if he didn't have so much passion in the performance. Decent lyrics and voice to match, servicable acoustic playing with a nice lick in the middle. For real though he must have been growing that beard since he was twelve years old or something. I bet if he shaved his head he wouldn't be able to sing the song, it's the source of his magic.

So something about Luke, specifically to the people that thought he was "out of character" or whatever in TLJ, did those people watch Return of the Jedi? He literally force chokes gamorrean guards, wears solid black to symbolize that he's on the edge of the dark side the entire film, and the only reason he beats Vader is by unleashing his rage.

Like yeah, he chose the light at the end, but he was never infallible.

How does any of that stuff line up with him becoming a despairing coward who won't leave an island to help his own family? The whole confrontation with Vader is about persuading him but when he faces Kylo in this movie he doesn't offer a single nudge to the light despite it being spelled out to the audience that the guy is conflicted? Can he not sense that? I just don't see where this defeatist attitude came from, certainly not Return of the Jedi.

Eve 6 Enemy
Solid pop-punk with a fairly anthemic chorus and a nice soft section. It sounds like montage music for every mid-2000's high school movie and that's not a bad thing.

Envy on the Coast - Numb
This does have pretty stellar vocals, usually it's not the type of thing I go for but for some reason I really like it on this track. Good change-ups too, you got the "Livin' on a Prayer" sound at 1:40, choir/piano interludes, that killer Soundgarden closing tag. Sick layering. It all works! I'm a fan.

Luniz - I Got Five On It
Accountability is what separates the homies from the skeezers. The oddly dramatic hook and classic laid-back beat are loaded with personal reefer-laced nostalgia that I look back fondly on and the combo is still catchy today. It may just be another song about drugs but an easy win for this week. MESSIN' WITH THAT INDO WEEED

E.G.G. a.k.a. COSIO - EU over Progress
Between prog and lounge, arcade and carnival, at the pit of man's kitsch and the summit of his technique. This is the dimension of expressive pads, strange chord patterns, and slightly obnoxious drumming. It is an area which we call...the Mycro Zone.

Lucy Dacus - Night Shift
A true grower that invites with intimacy and gradually snowballs into an indie juggernaut. Great vox/lyrics, maybe it takes a bit long to say what it needs to say but I appreciate it's scope and how personal it feels. I hope she ends up with a guy named Lucas Dacy.

The White Stripes - Apple Blossom
This one takes me back to junior high, I remember when I first picked up De Stijl I was disappointed that it mostly sounded like this (bluesy) and not so much like Seven Nation Army (heavy) - but it grew on me over those couple years and really familiarized me with the form. It's corny but authentic at the same time. I like the old saloon piano in this particularly and there's some nonstandard moves to keep it interesting...but after all these years I ultimately still wish it were a record full of Seven Nation Armys.

Ty Segall - Feel
Gritty and explosive with a sick guitar solo and even sicker drum solo. It pumps that eternally cool "When the Levee Breaks" riff with even more juice to knock the psychedelic rock vibe out of the park.

Lena - Traffic Lights
Dance-pop is a paradoxically hard sell for me. I want it to go beyond the proven formulas, timbral vocabularies, and songwriting blueprints to excite me and this is not that product. I want non-commercial dance pop. I know. This high standard is pretty hypocritical since I don't apply it to every genre - I just praised the Ty Segall song for reminding me of a seminal Zeppelin cut for instance - but I guess there's no accounting for taste.

I Monster - Daydream in Blue
I'm not so big on the descending chromatic line as its employed here but the sparseness of the session is appealing and I dig the " vintage am radio" compression on her voice. The good managed to neutralize the bad and I ended up with a pretty positive experience overall.

Opeth - Windowpane
I can safely say I don't remember how any Opeth song goes. I liked the part in the middle with the pedal tone thing, that felt like an odd progression. Somehow this is all way more mellow than I thought they were, even the climax is subdued here. I can't say the song grabs me for the majority of its eight minutes though, a lot of it left me absently floating.

Protostar & MakO - No Fire
Dubstep should just never leave the skronky part, 100% drop all the time get out of the kitchen if you can't handle it. The novelty of the deceptively basic verse has worn thin. This song isn't all bad, it holds my interest every other thirty seconds.
