High school was great. I'm still friends with lots of people I went with 15 years later, and we're pretty spread out geographically at this point. I had fun playing sports, wasn't bullied, and could fit into lots of social groups despite being a "nerd" because I played football and ran track and actually got to know the jocks, plus it was a small town so most people hung out despite being different anyway.

Same for the air force, when I took the pretest and scored in the 90s my recruiter was stoked because he could try and get me to be a recruiter. Man Hatred sounds both awful and hilarious. Apparently the creator made it as a reaction to "PC games" and "games as art," then went on to drop this nugget:

"We want to use dark ambient music, because there's nothing [pleasantly] exciting in this game," Zieliski said. "It's supposed to feel kind of sad, and hateful. It's supposed to give the player an evil grin."

"I want to give the main character in Hatred a kind of humanless, killing machine vibe. I don't want to justify anything. I want the player to ask: why."

Lol it sure sounds like he tried making something artistic. Just like politics, art's only in games if I personally disagree with it!

I'm not shilling for anything, you just can't accept that people disagree that this set a "precedent." A company releasing a game in a state that brought on universal condemnation is not going to set a "precedent," especially after the game was hated so much the company had to give people their money back en masse.

Not to mention the game came out almost two years ago. What AAA games have come out in a similar state? How many developers are following in CDProjekt Red's and releasing buggy messes? There's no precedent set because no one's following suit.

Nothing sexual happening makes sense. This is t GTA,, and the character you're playing as isn't the type to go around fucking hookers. Even if you play him as an outlaw asshole he's still somewhat respectable, deeply in love with a woman he knows he can't and won't ever have, and is still damaged by the death of his first wife and child. When Arthur cuts loose, he's always surrounded by friends and family and just drinking having a good time, not hitting on women because that's the state of mind he's in.

This feels like a good place to ask this:

My girlfriend and I just moved into a new place, and there's a "second" living room that were turning into a listening space. I love the idea, it's a nice little nook in the house that's hard to hear from elsewhere I the house because of how it's set up. Problem is, the record player we have is a Christmas present she got me, and it's a victrola piece of crap. It skips constantly on earlier tracks, and my research has told me it's because the needle isn't heavy enough to have any sort of force behind it.

I can't tell her that, because I've had the damn thing for almost a year now, but once she finally uses it (it'll be a while...) I'll be able to pretend it broke in the move and get a new one, which finally brings me to my question:

What brands and price points should I be looking for when it comes to entry level record players that don't fucking suck? I can do some preshopping and go ahead and pick something out and then I can finally get back to blasting jimmy Buffett to annoy her.

Honestly, one of the things I noticed while working as a reporter in a small, very red town was how many people were diehard republicans but we're very into local policies that, if enacted at a state or national level, would be considered left wing. There's a massive disconnect in the Republican part with regard to actual policy to the point that for most of them, it really is just a red team vs blue team rivalry with no knowledge about what those teams actually do.

I still prefer HG/SS, but it's definitely the best of the recent crop. Once they moved to the French region(the one with fairy types), I feel like the games have gone downhill.

The core gameplay is still fine because it's so simple you just have to add small tweaks every couple of generations, but everything outside of battles has gotten awful. They try to make these deeper stories but they're still at their heart written so that 7 year olds can understand, so what you end up with is a game that's constantly interrupting itself as soon as the gameplay starts to feed you an awful story.

They're also overly handholdy now. You get funneled along a set, predictable path with the same amount of trainers that each have 1-2 Pokemon. It's just boring.

Now, Arceus might still have a poor story but it actually lets you just go out and play the game, and playing the game is done how a Pokemon game should be. You just go out in the wilderness and catch every pokemon in sight and every now and then you battle another trainer. It's simple and it works because that's all Pokemon needs to be.

I saw plenty of more famous people (even fucking kid rock lmao) while there, but never actually met them. Only person I actually wanted to meet was T-Pain when he came out to a base I was deployed to.

After I separated I actually met someone more famous though. After he retired from the NFL to get his PhD in mathematics from MIT, John Urschel came to the community I was attending. I was taking business algebra at the time just to knock out some basic credits before transferring, and my professor was the head of the department and gave the class extra credit if we attended a private talk later. Only a few of us attended because it was later in the evening, but Urschel was a really cool, smart, and kind dude. I think it needs to be pointed out that the ones pushing these book bans are republicans in power and some very fringe, small groups.

At my last paper, we also covered the book bans around November/December because there was this weird fringe group pushing to remove books from our public library. How do I know they were a fringe group? Because there were about a dozen of them in favor of the ban, and hundreds came to the courthouse to protest any potential bans. This was in a town in deep southern Texas where we were regularly (incorrectly) labeled a democrat rag and Beto gets laughed at when he comes to visit (even though he's the ONLY gubernatorial candidate that bothers to visit). The people there are red as red can be and even they were like "WTF are you doing trying to ban these books for?"

Oh wow option 1 is very common way of thinking in the two units i worked at in airforce aircraft maintenance. 3-level newbies aren't really expected to do much the first year or so other than push a toolbox and some ground equipment around the flightline all day and shadow more experienced people (mainly 5-levels & sometimes 7-levels) in various aircraft related tasks. If there was absolutely no work or study for the 5-level test they'd just make them (the 3-levels) clean a part of the unit's building which wasn't much tbh cuz it was fairly small.

Then there were were the 7-levels who did less of the physical work that the the 5-levels did (like removing/replacing components). Sat around in the office or truck (especially if expediter) more often and mainly came out to the flightline to check the work of the 5-levels or help troubleshoot a problem. Of course if there weren't enough experienced bodies due to poor manning they go out and do the work of the 5-levels as well. 9-levels never went out on the flightline and just did office work.

Just going off memory so idk how accurate this is and prob varies per base or whatever. I don't see the problem with this type of lifestyle tbh. I can see people being jaded after a few years of terrible work hours and sometimes backbreaking work. I met many ppl in their mid 20s that had some knee or back issues. Let the new bloods do the shit the old heads don't wanna do.

Good to hear the three level experience was the same in other career fields lol.

In air traffic, we also had a year or so of training you had to complete before getting your five level. Like you said, it was mostly shadowing 5 and 7 levels in position before going up for your certification (and tests and other knowledge-based stuff) but there was also a fair bit of "bitch work" that came down to making sure the facility nice. Cleaning the tower, trimming the hedges, sweeping the entranceway, that sort of thing. It wasn't a punishment or anything, we just didn't have janitorial staff and the three levels were the only ones free to clean because everyone else needed to be in position working planes in the sky.

There was hazing though, which I wasn't in support of after seeing another 3 level get it particularly bad and wash out. I mostly put a stop to it on my crew once I got my 7 level, but the crew I was running skewed really young and most of the 5 and 3 levels were all friends anyway so there was never any mean-hearted stuff going on.

One odd thing I noticed about the hazing was that all the "pranks" people would do to fuck with the three levels seemed like the same jokes they were playing 20 years ago, and it was always old guys. Like, they would send 3 levels on pointless errands to get things like an approach gate key which doesn't exist since the approach is an imaginary point that doesn't actually exist. These old tower controllers really thought they were being slick since the approach is a concept that radar controllers learn, but were too dumb to realize that in the decades since they went to tech school they've been teaching 3 levels both tower and radar to make them more well-rounded and easier to slot into different bases that need new controllers.

TLDR: Paying your dues is great when it's just learning the basics and completing tasks that others have been promoted out of, but it can easily become hazing if you're not mindful, which is obviously bad. It's just not a black and white concept.

Any other store and I'm lucky to even talk to a manager for a story. Plenty make me go through a comms department that never gets back to me or just let's the phone ring, and ring...and ring. Meanwhile, at Target the manager gave me his phone number and said to call him anytime I needed a source for a retail story or needed to drop in to take some in-store photos for a story. Great dude and a total lifesaver when Walmart wouldn't even let me pull my camera out in-store.

I'd buy socks at Walmart, but that's pretty much it.
