I have cooked my whole life, but man it's nice not to have to lol. I was eating out alot recently, but I'm staying home now to be safe, so cooking more again.

Not everyone is a good cook though, some people were never meant to cook lol, and others have like no taste buds so have no clue they can't cook at all.

My wife had a friend, who was a mother of 4 (but they were all grown up) and had a husband and she cooked for all of them their whole lives (well not the husbands whole life). She cooked with instant mashed potatoes and things like hamburger helper etc, and it was.....really not good.......but they didn't know better because that is what they ate their whole lives.

Maybe the love she has for them made it taste better to them.

Maybe her husband secretly sneaks in burgers before he comes home lol.

I had a similar experience once many years ago, was there over night. Will not go back, don't even see psychologists etc, to avoid any chance of being admitted. Those places can literally be hell holes. I'm sure they are all not that bad, but you have no control and if you get in a bad one, your screwed.

Least you had your mom to come and scream at them, and they let you out cause of that cool dude. You can get stuck in there for weeks before they decide to let you out if your unlucky.

It is a good way to prevent suicide attempts though, if people are more afraid of getting stuck in a psych ward then having to continue to live, then they won't attempt to kill themselves lol, or they will be very very careful and sure they won't fail.

I just couldn't sleep without looking it up.

This is obviously just 1 quote and not extensive research, but it general shows that my memory of silver being considered "magical" and fighting against evil does go way back. As far as werewolves, they are a lunar based creature, which did go way back (Believe the lycos thing was greek?)......but I don't know any specific intersections between them in the past (maybe Grim bro's had a story or two..shrug).

Anyway here is the quote, and then the link to where it is from. I could probably find more, but I'm tired, I just couldn't go to bed without looking it up at least a bit.

"Silver is also replete in ancient literature, with attributed magical properties that to this day is still believed by many cultures and individuals. Silver is commonly attributed to lunar deities, hence its alchemical moniker LVNA. Likewise, it is also attributed to the sacred feminine, as many lunar deities were goddesses. Silver has long been believed to be a metal that conferred protection against evil and bad luck. The now notorious belief in the powers of a silver bullet clich in werewolf and vampire movies beyond count took root in the folkloric idea that silver had been vested the ability to ward off evil spirits due to its associations with the moon. While the idea that silver wards off vampires is thought to be Christian, the use of silver as a means to deter or ward off evil exists in Islamic, Hindu, Egyptian, and Eastern European cultures as well. In Greek mythology alone, silver is mentioned just about as often as gold, the most notable being the silver-tipped bows and lances of the Goddess Artemis. The belief in the holy powers of silver didnt escape the notice of people, as even Cardinal Richelieu himself was said to have had commissioned weapons made of silver. In Eastern European folklore, silver coins are supposed to be buried on the pillars or foundations that support a house that is being built to ensure that the inhabitants of the household shall never be in want. Silver was also reputed to be able to detect poisons, as it was supposed to change color on contact with a poisonous item. This belief became so widespread that entire sets of silver dining ware became commonplace at one time or the other, lending the same silverware to any such items (whether genuine or otherwise) to this day."

Nope.

It was never a thing in actual mythology. It wasn't even a thing in fiction until about 100 years ago, give or take. It's a very new addition to the concept.

I read a ton when younger and could have maybe actually argued this, but at this point I just don't remember much anymore. I vaguely remember/thought that the brothers grim collected German (It think..bulgarian..shrug don't remember) tales about silver being used as a weapon. Thought it was about werewolves, or Lycon (Based on ancient greek mythology I thought), but I could be wrong. I am....pretty freaking sure that the Fey being weak to Iron went way back as well, and thought that silver was another weakness to some types (not goblins...but I thought it was something like that).

Sadly I used to love mythology, but yeah, I can't remember squat anymore. I can say that in modern literature (as you said in the last 100 years, and basically stuff written within my llfetime of reading (last 40 years) it was very prevalent). I can almost swear I remember mythology from ancient times that revolved around certain beings/people who could only be hurt by silver or other specific metals/substances.

Not gonna go searching it up on the internet (which I guess you can at this point), and i'm guessing you do have a current working knowlege on the subject, but damn if it doesn't feel like it was a thing way longer then 100 years ago, at least 300 or so.

Iron was well known as a fey weapon waaay back, and Silver poisoning was a weapon against werewolves almost from the start.

Major series have been written by authors for along time that have expanded the lore though. Anne rice everyone knows about, and that included vampires feeding off each other, a more in depth description on how they started, and how they gain power over time etc.

Laurrel K Hamilton had a great series before she decided to become a porn godess, which also expanded some on both vampires and werewolves, and was kinda incorporated in many authors works after that.

Patricia Brigs did a few werewolf series as well, focusing and expanding and tons of other authors (tons of urban fantasy authors basically) covered all types (fey, vampires, werewolves etc etc). Even my favorite author Jim Butcher added to the lore and different types of Vampires etc. There are so many types at this point, and it's often considered common knowledge for so many books/series, that it's almost impossible to read fiction at all and not get some info on them.

Depending on the version of zombie, it's not even really a challenge one on one for a normal human.

Vampires which can move much faster, do not NEED to drink blood from their enemies (I mean they need it eventually but not part of a fight), so a vampire could easily kill 1000 zombies without ever drinking any of their blood or being contaminated by it.

In addition the vampires are much stronger (even then zombies), much faster, and very intelligent. They could just avoid the whole zombie hoard easily and would have no reason to destroy them.

Finally, many versions of vampire (DnD etc) have control over the undead, and even create their own zombie followers, so it's highly likely the vampire could control the zombies, or take control of them at least.

I wish I liked earl grey but it's not black enough for me. English breakfast black works, but I'm cheap now adays and go with Lipton black tea (2 bags). The bags are 2 cents each, so my cup of tea is 5 cents (when you factor in cream/sugar).

If I get english black etc, it's more like 50 cents a cup and I have 2 cups a day....so it would add up, and I like lipton just fine.

I mean...wth? She is fighting the big bad guy and first she is flying towards him with one hand in front, but then wait, she is going to be more serious!! She looks a bit constipated and scowls and then....two hands in front!!! Ooooooooooh. But no...wait, that isn't it, she is gonna go super sayian here, and ....both arms back!!!! She's all in folks, this is some serious super girl fighting going on......oh wait.....never mind I think Ill throw a ball at him instead.

Why oh why does society focus on protecting vulnerable children instead of defending the rights and freedoms of sexual predators -potd, apparently

It's not just what those predators have done directly, which is horrid enough, but the fact that it has changed our society so children are no longer free to be children, where you can't trust strangers around them, where teachers (at least male ones) can not comfort or hold a child who is upset.

Sexual predators have created a society of fear. I don't think people on here are really defending them though. Defending the right to create art for instance, isn't totally wrong, and I admit my stance on such art is controversial.
I hate the way things have changed within my lifetime. I was lucky enough to go to a private school at the end (for one year) and it was like a family. Everyone cared for all the kids there, and I was often in charge of watching them etc. Such a thing wouldn't be done now, you wouldn't trust other adults to watch the kids, people won't just send them over to each others homes and I doubt there are such family like schools at this point. It's a really sad thing to me.

It's only a small number of people who could/would harm kids, but it has had a huge impact on how almost all children live in this day and age. There are tons of sad things in the world, but this is certainly a big one (and I know, it was always around and happened, it just wasn't as well known...so in some ways it's better now since less children are actually (hopefully) being abused/hurt. It still sucks though.

I would choose neither if I had a choice and just die, but if I had to choose between being put in a cell for 10 years, or being tortured for 1 day, I would go with being tortured for 1 day (I'd still fight against that torture though).

Keeping people in cells is horrid, and should only be done in a worst case scenerio and only with the CONSENT of that person where the other option is death.

Don't feel like killing them because of religious reasons etc, fine, but give them the ability to kill themselves at least.

Do not stick people in over crowded, unsafe, torture chambers for decades.

It's horrific.

While I see what youre saying, the opposite is also true. As its their only safe outlet. And could cause more problems if they cant use that. Not to mention, loli stuff probably isnt going anywhere anytime soon... And most people probably wouldnt agree to a law that prevents something like anime characters. Thats very unlikely to happen... For many reasons...

I like anime, and loli basically is sexualized young looking chars right? It's not actual sex with them, or pictures of them naked etc? From my understanding loli stuff wouldn't be illegal then.

Anything that depicts adults having sex with kids though would be, or porn with kid like characters etc. I do not think that is common at least right now.

I don't know if there is such thing as a "Safe" outlet for something like that. If I look at pictures of pizza on the internet, that isn't going to stop me from wanting pizza, it's going to make me want that pizza MUCH MORe and soon. I love pizza....I don't wanna have sex with it, but I just about enjoy it as much as sex. I HATE seeing pizza comercials at 3 am, when I can't get any good pizza. It's freaking torture.

I'd say that would be the same thing for pedophiles seeing pictures and never getting any of what they really want, why torture yourself?

I can't get delicious NY pizza (there is one place in NY in particular with such good pizza I dream about it). I don't go online and look at pictures of that pizza to ease my cravings, that would be insane. I would quickly end up flying to NY just for that pizza (again, did it in my 20's).

So yeah, nope on the scratching an itch etc, the best outlet is something else that has nothing to do with kids at all. People redirect sexual urges into sports, art and tons of other things. Do that, not look at pictures of kids.

Most of those guys have the option of acting on their attraction without hurting people. Bear in mind also that a lot of child molestation isn't as overt and forcible as people tend to consider rape to be. That doesn't make it any better, of course, but it does make it easier for the person doing it to rationalize it as being consensual enough (or at least to skip the step of considering whether or not their "partner" can actually consent).

I am of course only talking about actual molestation, although things like sleeping in the bed naked with kids is obviously wrong and should prevent anyone doing that from being alone with kids in the future. If someone controls themselves fine, sucks that is what they are attracted to, but if they don't do anything harmful about it, then good for them, they are a decent human being.

Try talking to a friend about it for support, and odds are you'll lose a friend, not end up with somebody who will discourage you from applying to be a gym teacher. As long as people hear "pedophile" and think "child molester" (lumping people who consume child porn in with that), that's not going to change, which means you're going to get more people with pedophilic urges trying (and potentially failing) to handle them on their own.

Again, I do think people should come forward and I think it shouldn't be villianized to have such feelings or desires, just to actually act on them. They should get help to prevent such actions from happening, and by identifying themselves will be put in less positions where it could. Sadly humans seem to be selfish and even if such help was available, I don't think most would use it :(

I even consider virutal (anime etc) child porn should be illegal because it could escalate someone etc.

I'd actually consider that to be one of the healthy outlets I alluded to earlier. Virtual stuff is actually harmless to make, meaning consuming it isn't harmful. That's not to say its consumption isn't cause for concern or that anyone using it as an outlet doesn't need to be seeking other help to keep their urges under control, but saying that it should be illegal because its consumers might want more is like saying that money should be illegal because it might make those who have it want to steal more. Illegality should be based on actual harm, not the presumption that it might inspire somebody to escalate to something more harmful (see also: "gateway drug").

See I get that nobody directly is harmed here, and in an eventual society where people were easily identified or came forward it might be different, but in a world where there are people out there who are attracted to kids, this kinda stuff could be dangerous. Is a crime being commited? No not really, it's technically art etc, but it could lead to crimes so I think the best bet is to prevent it from being created/spread around etc. Yeah it's a legal grey spot, but I think it's worth it. Laws can be created based on the majority of people considering it best for society.

Generally a knee-jerk overreaction, but basically, yeah. Child molesters suck and deserve pretty much all the hate they get (although the "won't somebody think of the children?!?!" attitude that drives people to consider it the worst crime ever is thoroughly irrational). I don't disagree there.

It's not a knee jerk reaction for me. I worked as a teacher, care about kids, and hate the fact that we live in a world where we have to be so careful with them. None of my students were even abducted or harmed, but we had tons of security to ensure that. It seems like the worst crime because it happens to those so young and can seriously ruin/harm their lives. Rape in any form is horrid, and sex offenders should be segregated from society, but yes, many people have a strong reaction to children being abused or harmed/put in danger etc. I think it's ingrained in us.

You basically just described a concentration camp. Being based on criminal convictions instead of some politician's genocidal inclinations takes a lot of the sting out of the concept, but it's still not really a reasonable approach. Rehabilitative prison and post-release restrictions (i.e. not being allowed to work with kids) is generally going to be more reasonable, though obviously America kind of struggles with the whole "rehabilitation" thing.

Not at all, I'm talking about something better (by far) than our current prisons. You might call it a concentration camp, but it is WAY better then what we currently have. Basically full towns, with homes/apartments, that have places to eat just like normal homes, grocery stores etc. There are no kids at all though, you can't have a family inside, you can't leave whenever you want etc, but you can live a normal life otherwise (possibly even better than some since your guarrenteed a job etc). Is this perfect? Heck no, but it's WAY better then the current jail system, and would be sustainable (money wise).

You say that as if pedos choose to be attracted to kids. The choice is whether they act on their urges.

That is the exact opposite of what I said. I said guys are attracted to women all the time, heck, ones that specifically dress up extremely sexy, yet don't rape them. It should be the norm, not the exception. Guys don't get to choose if they are attracted to women either, just if they act on it and how.

I went to get some loose black tea from Winco the other day. I looked at the price and it looked ok a bit under $2, but then I saw that it was $2 an ounce!!!! It was freaking $30+ a pound.

Needless to say, I did not get any.

I used to get loose black tea in Olympia for a decent price, it was still much more then buying bagged tea mind you, but it wasn't insane (more like $5 a pound or something).

I'll stick to my liptons (which isn't the cheapest option, but it's the cheapest option that doesn't taste horrid.....to me).

100 bags for $3 in general (unless you get them on sale, in which case I stock up). That comes out to about 3 cents per bag, and adding in creamer and sugar, about 5 cents per cut of tea. It's tasty, I like it, and it's a super cheap alternative to just water (which honestly costs almost as much I get 1 gallon of crystal geyser for 80 cents...which if I actually think about it, is probably more expensive than my tea (considering I boil tap water for the tea).

Anyway, you get used to the tea you use. I used to buy more expensive tea, and it did taste better, but, I truely enjoy a good cup of liptons tea and it tastes great, as long as I have not had a better cup recently to compare it to, I don't miss anything.

And that's precisely the problem: When you demonize the thoughts by so closely associating them with the actions as to use the same words, those who have the thoughts but haven't yet acted on them are going to bottle them up instead of seeking help or healthy outlets. Pedophiles that don't progress into child molesters deserve respect for their self-control, not the same vilification that they would face if they did find themselves a toddler to diddle.

Respect? how about just being a normal freaking human with some self control? Most/many guys find women attractive but don't consider raping them. I don't even quite understand how anyone find pre-pubescent children attractive in a sexual way, it doesn't make any sense, especially that there are enough for it to be well known throughout history.

IF you do find children attractive, I would actually suggest getting help. I think what the person means is if they report it, they go to jail because they have looked at child porn or something. I'm pretty sure before you get to that point you would know, and should get help before doing so.

I don't think being a pedophile is a criminal offense, but owning or creating child porn is and should be. I even consider virutal (anime etc) child porn should be illegal because it could escalate someone etc. You shouldn't be arrested for your thoughts, but you should for your actions, especially if those actions harm others or put others in harms way.

And yeah, if there is solid proof (actual video, dna evidence etc) that you molested a child, you should be locked up and the key thrown away or given the option of true castration (unless there is a way to ensure chemical castration is 100% effective and that the person can't just stop taking drugs etc) or the option to be put to death (your choice).

Laws are meant to protect people, but if someone is hurting a child, and ignores such laws, then they should not be put in a position to ruin another life, one way or another.

That being said, I don't think the prison system in the US works, and it's horrible. There should be "towns" that have security around them for sex offenders and others who are not safe to be part of society, but who can live mostly normal lives inside, working and living etc, even with (monitored) internet access. They could easily be made to actually generate money/taxes instead of cost tax payers a ton each year, and you could use such places to ensure dangerous people were not free to possibly harm others in the future.

TopicTrivia: When did Columbus discover the Americas?

Best video on Columbus.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZEw8c6TmzGg&vl=en

I watched the video. I will say he tries to be unbiased for the most part, but I also find his arguments fairly pointless and that his over all conclusion is the same (Columbus should be celebrated), so I do not really see the point of the video.

His arguments seem to break down to mostly the following:

Nobody is all good or all evil, it's not just black or white, but about shades of grey.

My answer is simple, you don't need to celebrate someone who is a shade of grey, and the same can be said of Hitler. I am quite glad we do not have a day celebrating him.

There were much worse people, who committed worse crimes than Columbus.

While some people may claim that Columbus was satan incarnate and the worst person in existence, that was not, and still is not a popular or well known belief. People just think he wasn't a great person, who committed some atrocities and certainly should not be celebrated. Yes there was worse people, there still are. You probably know a few of em, but maybe...you don't know you know them.

Columbus's words were taken out of context and/or mis-translated.

Other then directly refuting a few previous videos, I don't think this was a main reason most people are not a huge fan, and also, I don't think most people either love or hate him, I honestly don't care about him one way or another, nor did most people I know in my life.

There are tons of specific things I could go on about, such as his ties to creating sex slaves, and pedophilia etc, but it would become extremely long. I'd instead just like to state that considering how long his actions have been lauded and exaggerated in a good way, it makes a sort of sense that the reverse is happening more recently. It's backlash for having a person who shouldn't have been a hero in the first place, thrown in the faces of many people who perhaps don't feel like they made out that well when North America was colonized.

In the end, people saying Columbus didn't discover America are (usually) talking about North America, which is true, and that was I believe mentioned in the video as well. I do not personally see any reason his actions should have made him a hero to the level where we actually have a Columbus day in this country, it doesn't make sense, there are better American Heros we could celebrate for sure. What is worse, we are an integrated nation including people who could, and probably do, take affront to celebrating him, which makes absolutely no sense and is in extremely bad taste.

I don't know how it ends, or if it even has, I'm rewatching from the start now.

It was one of the shows me and my wife watched together so I have not seen it in 3 years since she died, but I'm gonna start over and watch all of it now.

And yeah, it woulda made sooooo many people mad, it would have been great.

I mean, being a moderator must be a pretty thankless job, but it's a neccesary one. I've been modded a few times when I didn't think I needed to, but I certainly wasn't going to argue about it. Gotta have some lines and rules, and people to enforce them, so it is great that we have anyone who is willing to do the job.
