63. Luke Cage

Seen: The 1 season

Favorite character: Cottonmouth

I'll admit, the second half of this show is rough. Diamondback just kind of comes out of nowhere as a main antagonist, without ever really feeling earned. Pretty much everything after Cottonmouth's death is iffy, and I don't think I'm alone in feeling that way. And yet, those first 5 episodes or so are phenomenal. Mahershala Ali's Cottonmouth is one of the MCU's best villains, hands down, and has such a terrifying presence in every scene he's in. Luke taking on entire buildings of gunners single-handedly is thrilling, and the soundtrack is fantastic. One song is particular from the show I loved so much that I haven't been able to stop listening to it since watching the show.

62. Elfen Lied

Seen: The one seasons

Favorite character: Lucy

So from what I've heard, a bunch of people on this board don't like this anime? It's one of the first anime I actually watched tbh. I went out of my way to avoid anime in school, but sometime after graduating high school, my girlfriend at the time convinced me to watch this with her. And I'll admit, I was surprised by how much I liked it. The bizarre amounts of nudity (especially when combined with the childlike mindset of "Nyu) is a little unsettling at times, but goddamn are those fight scenes satisfying. It's brutal and violent and dark in a way that was pretty unfamiliar to me at that point, having only really watched American animation prior to that.

61. Regular Show

Seen: At least first two seasons, beyond that not sure

Favorite character: Pops

Regular Show started around the same time as Adventure Time, and I got into both simultaneously. Of the two, I've always preferred Regular Show a bit. It never gets as deep as Adventure Time, choosing to focus almost entirely on the comedy. And because of this, the comedy lands better than Adventure Time's tends to do. There's only a small handful of significant side characters, and all of them are memorable, with Pops, Skips and Benson all being consistently funny. I knew from watching the first episode (in which they play Quartz, Parchment, Shears; the evil game!) that this show had great potential.

60. Scream Queens

Seen: Both seasons

Favorite character: Chad Radwell

Upon starting this show, I loved it pretty much instantly. It parodies teen slasher horror, and does so particularly effectively. Right off the bat, it introduces a lot of side cast that it never really pretends are going to be more than easy killer targets. The mystery of who the Red Devil is is actually really compelling, and fairly satisfying as you discover it over time. Meanwhile, the over-the-top ridiculousness from the rest of the characters is what makes it all worth watching. In particular, Chad Radwell and Denise Hempfield are two of the funniest characters on TV in recent years. That's actually part of my issue with the second season. It arbitrarily gets rid of the show's best characters, it doubles down on the Chanels, and loses some of it's charm overall. Still, the first season is fantastic, and season 2 still has its moments.

59. The Cleveland Show

Seen: All 4 seasons

Favorite character: Cleveland

I'll chock this one up on the list of shows I feel as though I liked more than anyone else here. It may just be a Family Guy spin-off, but damn if it isn't funnier than Family Guy ever was, AND it was short-lived enough that it never grew tired and unfunny like Family Guy did! My big reason for liking this show as much as I do is that Cleveland Brown is quite possibly the most relateable character on television. Like, if I was a TV show character, that would be exactly it (only whiter). The humor ended up working well for me because all the situations Cleveland gets himself in are things I could easily see myself doing irl. Cleveland Jr. was excellent as well, as was the show's occasional dips past the fourth wall. And it features David fucking Lynch as the bartender!

58.A Series of Unfortunate Events

Seen: The 1 season

Favorite character: Patrick Warburton as Lemony Snickett

Goddamn was this show impressive. Years ago they made an attempt at a Series of Unfortunate Events movie, and it wasn't like, godawful, but it wasn't great. This, however, completely nails everything the books were about, and everything about it is done all but flawlessly. The performances are dead on (Patrick Warburton's especially), the cinematography captures the dark mood of the book perfectly, and the writing is just goddamn excellent. I can't quite mark it among my all-time favorites just yet, but I can say this is one of the most expertly crafted book adaptations out there, and goddamn am I hyped for season 2.

57. My Name Is Earl

Seen: All 4 seasons

Favorite character: Crabman

HEY LOOK AT ME KARMA KARMA KARMA. My Name Is Earl had four really solid seasons before ultimately ending before its time. It was a different kind of sitcom, and that was refreshing. These weren't your typical rich, successful 20-somethings who got into all kinds of misadventures in NYC and ultimately had everything work out for them. They did shitty stuff, and when they did, shitty stuff happened to them, and they had no one to blame but themselves. The main cast was all really solid, and while Earl was of course the focus, there was plenty of humor to be provided by the side characters. It was just a really likeable show about a guy trying to turn his life around.

56. Parks and Recreation

Seen: All 7 seasons

Favorite character: Jean Ralphio

Unlike My Name Is Earl, Parks and Rec was able to see its way through to the end, and I'm really glad it did. The show takes a bit to really get going, with a "just ok" first season, but once all the characters sort of found their groove, the show really took off. I hear it compared to 30 Rock a lot, but from what I saw of the two, it wasn't even really comparable. 30 Rock was just sort of there, while Parks and Rec really pulled me in and made me pretty quickly care about the characters. Leslie Knope is great and all, but April, Andy and Ron really steal the spotlight whenever they're around. There's legitimate character progression, but it never pushes the characters entirely out of their archetypes, which is a nice balance for a sitcom.

Also, after Parks and Rec AND The Office, Rashida Jones really just needs to find a sitcom to not write her off way too quick. She's fantastic.

55. Flight of the Conchords

Seen: First 2 seasons

Favorite character: Bret

Favorite video: Too Many Dicks on the Dance Floor

Sort of like with Garfunkel and Oates, my enjoyment of this show comes primarily from my enjoyment of Flight of the Conchords as musicians/comedians. If you like their stand-up, you'll like the show. It's pleasantly goofy and awkward, and the songs (and music videos) are consistently great. Plus we've got Kristen Schall, who makes everything just a little bit better.

Rashida Jones left because she wanted to, and she was around for five or six of the seven seasons! It does seem like they couldn't quite figure out what to do with her character (putting her on a dating treadmill), but she was always fun. And super-hot.

She's the lead of her own series Angie Tribeca now, which... well, you can see for yourself.

Favorite character: Jason Funderburker

Seen: The whole thing, like come on, it's so short

This was a really big surprise. Came out of nowhere it seemed, whole show can pretty much be finished in one sitting (I think the total runtime of the series is around two hours?), it's got some excellent animation and performances (Elijah Wood and Melanie Lynskey are particularly impressive). Really there's no reason not to watch it; put it on like an animated film. I had a friend recommend it to me, and I found myself loving it pretty much instantly.

53. How I Met Your Mother

Favorite character: Probably Barney, though Lilly is close

Seen: All of it, unfortunately

Ugh, I don't really want to talk about this one right now because it's late and I can't talk about this one without ranting. The show is definitely one of the better sitcoms of recent years. The main cast is all solid (in fact, the main protagonist Ted is probably the weakest of the main five, and even he's not THAT bad). The rest are all at the top of the game, and even though the show can get pretty repetitive, it's still a damn funny show. It follows through on long term jokes (like the 5 slaps and the dopplegangers), it's easy to binge watch a handful of episodes at a time without it getting tiring, etc. And had the show ended just two episodes earlier, I'd really have no complaints. Rant incoming: What the FUCK were they thinking with that ending?! It was EASILY the worst ending of any show I've ever seen. Yeah, sure, let's just abandon all the character development of the ENTIRE SERIES so that the writers can have their fucking otp end up together. They spent the entire series developing these relationships, having Ted and Barney and Robin all develop and having Barney come to love Robin as an adult and vice versa and have Ted finally accept it and move on, only to fucking retcon it in the last episode. Yeah, we just spent the entire last season building up how Robin and Barney's relationship was totally legitmate and how much he had changed over time but FUCK THAT GOTTA GET A DIVORCE LITERALLY THE NEXT EPISODE BECAUSE TED AND ROBIN NEED TO END UP TOGETHER. Like, you realize, this means the ENTIRE SHOW was Ted explaining to his kids how their dead mother was really just his fallback because he's actually always been in love with the woman he raised them to view as their aunt and that their RECENTLY DEAD MOTHER was actually just an insignificant part of his love life and the kids are TOTALLY cool with it. FUCK IT. FUCK THE LAST TWO EPISODES. But yeah, good show.

52. Brooklyn Nine-Nine

Favorite character: Ray Holt

Seen: All 4 seasons, so far

God I can't even fucking think straight right now, I'm so heated from thinking about HIMYM. Brooklyn 99 is better. Pretty much everyone on the show is consistently funny (I didn't like Gina at first, but even she grew on me over time). It's one of the few comedy shows that manages to have a gay character who's not a stereotype, whose sexuality is acknowledged but isn't the focus of their character. It has widely varied cast who tend to stick within the archetypes most of the time, but not to the point where it becomes overly repetitive. The heist episodes are great, Captain Holt's insult war with the she-devil is constantly hilarious, and Terry Crews makes everything better.

51. Fillmore!

Favorite character: Ingrid Third

Seen: I THINK all of it? It's a little hard to remember honestly, but there are only 26 episodes.

Man Fillmore and Ingrid Third were the shit. This show flew pretty under the radar (good luck trying to watch the show now, except maybe via some shitty quality online site uploader from 2002). It's a shame too, because it was one of the best kid shows of its time. Hell, it almost seemed like it was intended for adults; the references are things only adults would get. For instance, the very first episode straight up parodies Silence of the Lambs. There is no better parody of detective movie archetypes out there. If you never heard of this one, and you do find a way to see at least one episode, it's definitely something to check out. Fillmore was THE badass detective when I was a kid, and really, he still is. The show has this unique mix of comedy and action that you really don't see in early 2000s kids shows. There's nothing else quite like it.

50. American Dad!

Seen: First 13.5ish seasons

Favorite character: Avery Bullock

Finally coming toward the end of the animation domination line-up. I started watching this show around the time I stopped watching Family Guy, and for some reason the humor just immediately clicked with me much more, and still does, frankly. I've seen pretty much every episode on Netflix (unfortunately, now they've taken off the majority of the show, and they're removing what's left next month). It's easy to write off as just another Seth McFarlane immature comedy, but there's something a little more special here. One of the big standouts is Patrick Stewart, who is fucking hilarious in every scene he's in. His character is so bizarre and wild that it's hard to believe it's actually him. The plots are just a step more creative than what Fox animation typically offers. One of my favorite episodes sees most of the world raptured and the main characters teaming up with Jesus to take down the Antichrist in a post-apocalyptic hellscape. Similarly, the music in the show is just shockingly good.

49. Better Call Saul

Seen: All 3 seasons

Favorite character: Mike

Similarly to Master of None, I ranked this prior to seeing the most recent season. Had season 3 come out prior to this ranking, BCS would have jumped up quite a bit, because season 3 was phenomenal. In particular, Chicanery set an entire new bar for the show, rivaling some of Breaking Bad's best episodes. I was a little hesistant of them making a spinoff of Breaking Bad (which, yes, it's safe to assume will be on this list later) but this really surprised me. In particular, Bob Odenkirk made for a much more impressive lead than I could've expected going in. I'm not even really a big fan of courtroom drama, but this show is so, SO much more, with plenty of excellent weaving plots.
