I think I was kinda in a bad place at the time and not in the mood to fully engage with a movie if that makes sense, but I too remember being incredibly bored watching it in the cinema(was dragged along by a friend) All I remember is sand and really loud annoying droning noises throughout the movie and being happy when it ended

Basically there are families fighting for power, but all are under the control of the Guild. There is a prophecy of a person who will lead humanity down the golden path and ultimately save them and free them.
Dune is about that. In some respects it's a like tolkeins work where the journey is more important than the destination.

I "get it," but it loses me with its mumbo jumbo world building in the first movie. Took me and my gf 3 tries to watch the whole thing, picking up where we left off each time.

It was just very, very dense with jargon and exposition. Most of it felt hokey to me. I give the franchise credit for being an early success in the space epic genre, but boy did some of those concepts age with questionable grace in the mean time.

But you are talking about the political intrigue.

Are shields hard to understand?
Psychic powers?
Stimulant than enables psychic powers?Genetic enhanced soldiers
Giant Sandworms
Suits that turn sweat into drinking water

All the "mumbo jumbo" is political bullshit which is realistic.
Try explaining real world politics of one country to another.

I hated Dune (2021). The movie felt like they were rushing through political plot lines because theyre too dense (I know the book is quite long). Because of that, I had no actual investment in that was going on. The actors felt like they were just there for a fat paycheck and none of the performances hooked me. Sure, the movie looked nice, but that doesnt make up for it being a bore.
Honestly, if Space Jam: A New Legacy hadnt come out the same year, Id say Dune was the worst major film of 2021.

Okay so basic concept is that is a parallel for the war in the Middle East.

Spice is oil. Spice makes space travel possible in this world.

the Harkonen are the USSR. They want the spice/oil for themselves and are evil.

The Atredes are British/American. They also want the spice/oil for themselves. They are the good guys but its still a matter of who enslaves the native population this week type of good guy.

the Fremen are the rebel fighters native to the country. So the taliban. They will fight anyone who comes to their planet trying to take their spice/oil.

no body is a good guy. Its all shades of grey.

thats the basics.

to get more complex, there is an added layer of the messiah figure prophecy.

Basically, Pauls mother is part of a religion. That religion is the largest in the world, and has purposely married off into the wealthiest and most influential families of every planet. Said religion also speaks of a messiah coming and they say that to every region/culture they slip into. That way, in thousands of years, the native populations believe this messiah figure is their own native myth.

basically, the Catholic Church (or whomever our real world parallel is) has purposely used religion to brainwash the masses to accept whatever puppet messiah they put in front of the natives. So the religion shoves Paul out there to placate the taliban and give the church a legitimate claim to the spice/oil.

and then there is the world bank, which is purposely manipulating prices to keep the war for spice/oil going in order to make the most money.

once again, nobody is the good guy.

now then. Thats basically it. Yes there are magic powers, other stuff like that. But at the end of the day, its a story about a child raised to be a puppet figurehead caught in a war for oil with everyone on every side trying to manipulate him.

and then the book also adds in the fact that you can read everyones inner thoughts. Which. Is hard to read because there will be 20 people in a room with 20 different inner thoughts.

Read the book

Reading it isn't gonna make it any less boring. If he didn't like the movie he's definitely not gonna like the book.

Not sure why so many people say the book was boring. I finished reading it last week and didn't want to put the book down. I might even pick up the other books in the series. Before the 2021 movie came out I knew absolutely nothing about Dune but I enjoyed the movie a lot and look forward to seeing Part II

Because Frank Herbert wasnt really interested in telling a story in the first place. He wanted to convey the message not to trust charismatic leaders and came up with some characters and a plot to do it with.

By far the coolest thing in the first Dune book is told to the reader in a throwaway sentence instead of being shown to them. Thats just one example.

I was never much of a fan of Star Wars, but I watched the first Dune a few months ago, and I loved it so much! I watched it twice last week to prepare for Part Two, and I just might go see it again next weekend.

I wouldn't say it's underrated. In fact I'd say it's great. But it's also not for everyone.

And if it's not your thing, there's nothing wrong with not liking it.

When I was a kid, they used to air the 80s version on tv Sundays occasionally. It was an all day event with the amount of commercials they'd cram into it. I was never able to actually see the whole thing in one sitting.

A lot of the sort of knowing about the plot already is really helpful for sticking with this version. I vaguely remember a bunch of stuff and it's nice to see it expanded and as an adult I'm able to keep up with the plot better. Still, as just a movie taken without all of the rest of that, it's super slow and I understand why many people wouldn't enjoy it.

Surprised people are that into it.

Theater was packed.

I wonder if the theory that people are hoping for another LotR phenomenon is driving it in part.
