I'm playing the PS4 version with the normal sphere grid system. I like the real turn based aspect of it >_> Tidus is weird tho.

The story only gets more and more convoluted as the game goes on.

The end will definitely have you going WTF?

That said, it probably has one of the best romance storylines a FF game has ever had.

It's possible to beat the game without the sphere grid, overdrives or summoning. All at the same time. Plus a bunch of other limitations can be placed and still beat the game up to the last few bosses.

Save frequently.

And try to farm at least a dozen ability spheres on the mi'ihen highroad because you won't be able to get any more for awhile if you follow the story path, and that can make it difficult if you do depend on stats to progress because you won't want to miss out on an ability.

Very minor spoilers ahead (character/town names etc) but things I'd want to know if I was starting today.

The game has a collectible minigame where you learn another language by finding primers on the floor throughout the game. So keep an eye out and search areas for them.

Save points full heal you making the game insanely easy.

Tidus gains new overdrives (super moves) by doing overdrives, so use his ASAP. Everyone else's are worth saving till you need them (although Lulu's is fucking awful for the entire game)

Even if you hate Blitzball (Mini-game the game has) play the tournament to get Wakka's Overdrive Attack Reels) as it is the most OP attack in the game.

Aeons (especially their overdrives) are insanely powerful for the first half of the game.

When you get to Besaid and are leaving for the first time, talk to the shopkeeper (don't have to buy anything) and then search a dog's mouth. For some bizarre reason this gives you an extra overdrive for Valefor which is crazy OP at the start of the game,

If you are playing the International version or HD remaster, you will have a choice of Sphere Grid which is just the leveling system. Pick the standard one as it is superior to the expert one. Only real plus of Expert is that you learn Steal and Bribe quicker but there's no reason to have those skills right at the start of the game and in every other way it is objectively worse.

If you are playing the International or HD Version, then the game will have superbosses which are really fun.

A lot of people say the story only "gets good" When you reach Luca. Which is like 5-7 hours in. I don't agree though.

Also prepare for cut-scenes. The game has like 14 hours of cut-scenes and they are unskipable.

Also to settle down some fears about Al Bhed Primers, there are only 4 (out of 26) that are missable.

If you make this a playthrough topic we'll be happy to point out where those are when you get to close to them so you don't miss them and no spoilers.

Also the Sphere Grid is very simple but it LOOKS complicated at first and the tutorial is awful. don't be put off by that.

Also also, Fortune Spheres are incredibly rare (only 4 actually found in the game outside of Superbosses and Blitzball rewards) so never use one on a node that isn't Luck +4. Otherwise you're just wasting them.

I'd advise giving them to Yuna as upping her stats ups the Aeons stats also. But some people like giving Luck to Wakka or Tidus just to make them get criticals.

Again this won't be a problem if you are playing the International or HD version as you will have the Extract Ability skill and will be able to buy Ability Distillers from shops (if you REALLY want to) so there is no reason to farm.

Are you playing the PS2 Version and are you American?

Also Kimarhi learns new Overdrives by doing Lancet on certain fiends. When he learns a new Overdrive it fills his entire overdrive meter up in one go. So that's neat to know.

It's useless. Sure you get lots of hits but they do close to no damage and it's an absurdly slow attack which pretty much does Delay to Lulu. Which considering Lulu has crappy agility to begin with makes it useless.

You do it on a boss - the cost outways the gain
You do it on a normal enemy - you didn't need to bother.

Early game its just bad, but then the second Lulu learns Doublecast it becomes literally worthless (aside from Entrust)

It's the worst overdrive of the lot.

You're able to go back to them later but some are kind of a pain to return to after a certain point thanks to the addition of the aforementioned super bosses in this version.

lol 14 hours. The WR SR is under 10 hours long. Even letting all the dialogue that can be sped through get read all the way through, it's still barely going to be 9 hours of dialogue and scenes.

And Luca is more like 3-5 hours in.

Which is utterly meaningless considering by the time you have Lulu doing 9,999 with basic fire hits you will be so OP for any normal enemies/bosses that you won't need to bother in the first place AND Wakka can do 1,199,988 in one attack without delaying himself.

Plus elemental attacks will be useless against superbosses.

So yeah, Useless. VerisimiIitude posted...

This is really solid advice TC. Make note of it.

When you do Cloister of the Fayth Trials use Destruction Spheres to find the hidden treasure, it'll save you time and potentially superbosses later.
