Well... he might not have been a white supremacist, but he was racist. Don't really care, though.

So we're just supposed to ignore his contributions to cinema because he might have been racist?

What's wrong with simply saying he was a product of his time and while his views are reprehensible today, he's still an important person from the golden age of Hollywood?

here's the thing. it was a different time. we've grown as a society since then. we should be able to look back on the cultural contributions that people like him have made and separate that from whatever other distasteful aspects might have been associated with them. USC has a noted film school. we should see his statue there as symbolic of his contributions to film and nothing more.

Eh nah. You can just study the films during class if there is anything of value to get from them in terms of technical film stuff.

He literally said black people are inferior. Why would you want a statue of that out on campus where students might get the wrong impression?

Sell it off.
This will remove the exhibit from a public institution, while injecting some easy revenue into said public institution.

If the new owner(s) then shut down any resulting private John Wayne museum from lack of profit, then it was never a viable endeavor anyway.

If the protestors insist it be removed from existence entirely, then we know their true motive is essentially just plain old book burning.

There is, but the point was that we wouldn't really put up something praising someone or treating them as a centerpiece of our institutions just because of some incidental contributions.

John Wayne was a terrible person. You may have not known that (I didn't until I saw someone here mention what he said about white supremacy and googled to find out more). So why put him up as a statue somewhere?
