So for my mom to use me as a prop online and say she's ashamed of me was too much for me to reconcile. I'm 30 years old now and I don't need her for anything - financial, physical or emotional. I'm tired of chasing a mother who will never do anything but think of herself. I am so damaged from decades of her always placing blame on me for any issue she's having or if we're having an argument. All I ever have wanted was a family that cared about each other. All I have ever gotten were parents who did everything they could to pit my siblings and I against each other while completely emotionally abusing us. I wouldn't say it's necessarily "the new thing to do," but in an age of social media where people share their stories about cutting out toxic family members, those who have always been fed the line "they're family you have to love them" are seeing that there's another, better option than continuing to tolerate them, and can find support and solidarity. It's always been a problem, it's just within the past few years that it's become more socially acceptable to do something about it. --- This is my signature. Focus on those people who build you up, and who you love, or miss when you don't see them/talk to them in awhile. Family is supposed to be a source of security/love/happiness etc, but so often that is not the case. I have a friend who has been dealing with a very similar issue, with a mother who puts him down all the time, and makes him feel like a failure. He still doesn't wanna give up on her (or the rest of his family), but I keep telling him to start his own, and create a family that makes him feel good about himself, and doesn't leave him drained or depressed every time he interacts with them. Anyway, good for you on making such a hard decision, I know it can be hard to cut ties with someone, even if they have only been a negative influence in your life.
