Can't say I'm entirely surprised. The marketing for this movie doesn't show much of anything about the movie other than the cities being tanks and the girl being a chosen Juan.

I see no problems here...
Earth runs out of resources because of the cities, and the cities that stops moving will be attacked and be stripped of their resources by the evil Germans.

After glancing at the book's Wikipedia page, the moving cities weren't built because of low resources, it was because there was massive geological upheaval. I assume they just...wheeled the city away whenever something bad happened?

Yeah, it started because of an alaskan bull worm attack.

See, then that floats back into really bad advertising, because the previews I saw made me think "Earth out of resources" movie. But massive problems with Earth's geology makes a lot more sense.

I mean, it is that kinda movie, but the Earth's out of resources because a bunch of massive cities decided they needed to run around on wheels.

Reading the premise on Wikipedia makes it seem like a very generic plot. Sort of like how Avatar was a pretty standard love story plot just with a incredibly impressive and groundbreaking CGI Effects. Except Mortal Engines doesn't have anything ground breaking. Just a unique concept that they don't do much with that they couldn't do with a boat.

Is it the Germans? The trailers on TV make it seem like "London" is the bad one

Germans , and Russians, are always the evil.
As for Mortal Engines, all cities are preying on other cities so they are all evil.

I think the villain in the first book (and thus movie) would actually be London though.

This is not true about the movie at all. Saw it the other day so here are some not that massive but bigish spoilers.

London is specifically a predator city. In the opening sequence (which is really cool and the best part of the movie), you see a bunch of smaller German/Bavarian trading cities being chased by London with one being engulfed. There are also slave-hunting cities in the shape of centipedes and a resistance-led sky city.

It's a decent enough film. It's not atrocious and that's coming from a movie snob. Visuals are great, Hugo Weaving has never given a bad performance in my opinion. Everyone else is just serviceable. The idea that a 90-minute war caused all of this is fairly Mad-Maxian in that we don't get a full story of what actually happened.

The humor was my biggest gripe though. Too much Hobbit-level humor. Oh and the random robot wanting to murder his surrogate daughter to turn her into a robot bent on revenge plotline was stupid. >_>

The problem with that idea is that it really started being outdated around 1991 or 1992, it might be coming back into play, but I doubt it will ever match the previous hysteria.

I said the same thing about Mad Max. "We have precious little in the way of fuel, so lets build a massive truck, and put every single speaker we can find on it, headed by a lunatic with a flamethrower guitar!"

Yeah, I agree with that. Although at the same time, at least with Mad Max, it's very obviously the remains of humanity who may or may not be aware of how much of a valuable resource they're wasting while they build cars up the same way ancient kings built castles.

Actually, the really weird thing about Mad Max to me is "Where the hell did they find all these 30s cars for hot rodding?"
