Enjoy Chrono Trigger though. It represents everything that is good about old school RPGs.

I battled my way through this small dungeon cathedral. After some huffing and puffing, I made my way to the boss, Yakra, who has disguised himself as the royal Chancellor (which explains why he had been acting so funny earlier). I take Yakra to school, but he tests me with the toughest fight so far. Winning the day means I rescue the real Queen Leene (seriously can't get over that lol) and return her to the castle, where I am showered with much gratitude. I still gotta search for Marle, so I start meandering aimlessly, and she just sorta... appears in the same spot she disappeared earlier, and just as mysteriously. I'm assuming the game explains this later, because I have no clue right now.

After more wandering around, I eventually find a Time Portal (or "Gate") that teleports us back to our time, 1000 AD. Back home, Lucca jets to work on a new robotic buttplug, and I'm assigned with taking Ms. Adventure back to her castle home (although I can't give her too hard a time, after all, Ariel and Belle are like the original Ms. Adventures). I'm met with predictably stupid opposition, as the present-day Chancellor insists I abducted Marle, and thus puts me on trial (WHAT IS IT WITH CHANCELLORS). The evidence is presented, and I win out with a 4-3 Not Guilty verdict. I'm still given three days of confinement as a punishment for... being the main character, I guess. However, the Chancellor decides to earn his title and sentences me to death in three days. Of course, I, the main character, then decide to earn my title by breaking out of his jail, shredding his guards like paper, and escaping atop the rubble of a second destroyed boss with Lucca. This tank boss probably would have been tough if helpful hints weren't presented in the room before. As it were, the fight was cake.

We reach the castle doors, but not before the Chancellor confronts us with a small army of the un-armored royal guards. So far, these guys are my favorite enemies in the game, although I think they'd be more accurately described as annoyances. They don't attack (you don't even enter the battle sequence), preferring instead to flank you and keep you in place with hilarious animation. They're also rocking some seriously regal jumpsuits and Fonzie hairstyles. Check out my purple digs, eeeeeeeey! Anyway, Marle sees all this and is sick of the monarchy and their incongruously one-dimensional ways. She abandons her father and joins the proletariat for a life of working toward the common good (wow I think I just made this character twice as good, huh guys). We run off with the gay Fonzies in hot pursuit. Luckily, we find another Gate and quickly hop in.

More psychedelic warping, and the team finds itself in what seems to be the (very depressing) distant future. The monsters here are tougher, but nothing that my trio can't soldier through. We fight our way through Lab 13 and into a dome full of the starving dregs of this society. They say the basement of their shelter contains a computer and food reserves, but they can't reach it because of the crazy robots down there. Being the main character, it's only proper that the responsibility falls upon me to dial 911 and alert authorities to... just kidding, I'm going down there. But I save first and call it a night. So ends my first day with this, one of the most lauded role playing games ever.

It's very fun so far. Like I said, the old school visuals and sounds really stimulate the senses, especially senses that have had nothing but new-gen games for a while. I've found a few Power Orbs or Power Bars or whatever they're called (little glowing things that give a permanent +1 to Power). I've given them all to Crono, figuring he needs em since he'll probably be in my party the whole game. Let me know if this is a bad idea. Feel free to give me any help/discussion as long as it's spoiler free. Thanks!

Chrono Cross is actually a fantastic game. It has a few flaws (Battle theme, interchangeable accents AKA characters) but aside from those its a masterpiece with a really great story, as well as an absolutely amazing soundtrack.

Chrono Cross gets a lot of hate, and I don't understand why. Only thing I can think of is that people wanted it to be as good as CT... but thats a lot to ask for. In its own right, its still a great rpg and one of the best on PS1. Great music, innovative battle system, tons of characters, best graphics on the system, a lot of replay value... I honestly loved it.

Just a hint about Power Tabs: you don't have to give them all to Crono, but don't use any on Lucca or Marle. Strength does not alter their damage. All other characters are fair game. Later in the game, you will be able to get as many Power Tabs as you want, if you don't mind doing some grinding.

You will eventually meet someone called Spekkio, an optional fight. Return there after your characters reach level 10, 20, 30 and 40, as he will evolve and give you better rewards each time (plenty of tabs, Elixirs, Megalixirs, etc). Chances are you'll be level 10 before you ever get to him though, so you'll probably miss his "sub-level-10-form".

protip for playing Chrono Trigger: you can do whatever the hell you want. the game isn't hard. if you want to use a party of Crono/Frog/Lucca, go for it. it won't be a problem. CT is mega-simple (in a good way) so complex strategies really aren't necessary.

I knew you'd like this game. in a lot of ways it feels like a Nintendo game with all its charms. Crono's got a lot of that Link charm too. (moreso than Link if you ask me)

I'll keep that in mind. I want to go Crono/Frog/Magus to pay them back for a decade of contest awesomeness. I've heard that Magus is an optional character, though (no idea how hard he is to miss or if this is even true). Hope I don't miss him.

you might wanna save a couple of those tabs for other characters. technically everyone who uses strength can have their power max out at a high enough level, though Crono, Frog, and Magus all take a while (surprisingly Frog is weaker than Crono). the only stat that doesn't go up naturally is speed. you'll know you maxed out when your stat becomes **.

magic tabs are something you should give to Crono or Robo when you eventually get him. second one sounds weird, but he's got some great stuff that's magic based and pimped out can be the all around best.

Nah, I just want to play the games I missed out on that many others seem to love.

well... CC really has nothing in common with CT beyond the composer, who went heavy on celtic music. FF6 sounds like a good one to try afterwards since you can keep games from the same era going.

there's also the PS1 'cult' games from Square - Xenogears, Vagrant Story, Parasite Eve, Legend of Mana. these play pretty differently from each other but are worth playing (though avoid PE2).

and remember, we're talking about a jrpg made in the 90s. don't worry too much on who you pick for what task. this ain't a bioware game or something.

There hasn't been anything said so far that I'd consider a spoiler, so you guys are doing a great job tbqh. Anyway, I've done a lot of playing, so hopefully I can recount it tonight. I got through 2300 AD and learned magic from the fearsome SPEKKIO. I journeyed back to my time (after stopping by The End of Time and dropping poor Lucca to rot there), but I now find myself in a new continent controlled by Mystics (which basically are monsters). Magic seems to be pretty broken right now.

I disagree. If you don't like Lucca (and honestly, who the hell likes Lucca?) she can stay on the bench forever. I only ever use her in the one dungeon where her fire turns the strongest enemies into helpless puppies. Sure, Flare is God Tier, but so are the skills of most other characters in the end-game.

the cool thing about Chrono Trigger is that it has near-perfect character balance despite having totally different skillsets and stats. so just use whoever you like. Crono/Frog/Magus is by far the most popular party but it will be a good while before you have that option. if you want to use Robo to match up with Crono and Frog (because I know you won't take Frog out of your party unless you absolutely have to), go for it. if you like Lucca, go for that too.
