I've been messing around with some of the techs. Crono and Lucca's Cyclone + Fire combination (Firewhirl, I think?) was one of the most useful. Crono and Robo also has one that rocks house, but it doesn't look that cool and I think it eats 5 MP total.

...it's not just Flare. she's got hands down the strongest dual techs with other characters. >_>; the girl is magic death pretty much. you don't notice the gap that early, but as you progress, it's very clear. either way, 'bench forever lol' isn't advice that gets you to see whether or not you like playing with them or not.

as for parties with Crono/Frog... well go mess around with a couple to find the one you like best. there's some that mechanically are the best, but it's more fun to find little things like 'wow that dual tech is awesome what the hell.'

thinking about it, I bet you'll love Ayla. Crono/Frog/Ayla covers all the bases - damage, dual techs and healing.

I always thought it was weird how Chrono Trigger is seen as this niche classic when in reality it's the most accessible RPG on the planet. I bet you probably went into it thinking it'd be a quirky or unique fan favourite instead of just a regular RPG that's damn good in every aspect.

There is absolutely no reason whatsoever to use characters that aren't your favourite in that game. The fights aren't challenging in the least. Just go with the characters you want to see interacting with each other, you can check out the rest on your New Game+!

That said, I can't really think of anyone I dislike in that game. I abandoned Lucca on my first playthrough, but used her on another and she is indeed a beast in battle. Ayla is definitely #1 in all aspects though.

no clue. personally i like her - it's a genius scientist with purple hair that goes 'i can shoot things and light them on fire, what more do i need.' that and a couple scenes in the game where she's funny as hell are great including her going 'oh hey Crono, i'm here to bust you out of jail. oh don't worry about that guy, he's... alive.'

As noted earlier, I made my way through 2300 AD after recruiting Robo and finding the Gate. The fact that this seems to be one of the worst regarded areas in the game is very promising, as I didn't think it was bad. I went into the basement to activate the computer and procure food for the starved people holed up in the dome. After a boss fight against a mechanical Guardian (didn't think it was too bad), I learned the location of the next Gate and brought back seeds - the only food source I could find, back to the surface. The dome elder, Doan I think his name was, gave me his Bike Key as a reward, saying his bike would get me through Lab 32 more quickly. I do as he says and rev up the bike, but I'm confronted by a cocky robot/motorbike hybrid. Apparently, the only way through the shortcut is by beating him in a race. The race minigame kinda sucks (although it does show off some nifty SNES graphics), and I win.

Curious to see exactly what I skipped by taking this shortcut, I go back on foot. Turns out, the whole race saved me the effort of travailing through... one screen. lol. Granted, it was a screen with some tough enemies, but lol nonetheless. We reach the dome with the Gate and discover a hunk of scrap metal that, after some Lucca elbow grease, would be known as Robo, the fourth member of the team! Robo says we've gotta go pwn some ass in a nearby factory before we can access the Gate, and that he is a mandatory party member for this mission. I take him and dat blond ass to the factory to crush things hard, although some of the battles are more challenging now. Before leaving, six robots identical to Robo confront us. These ones, of course, are hostile, and scrap Robo, calling him defective. Crono's Cyclone makes short work of them, and we drag the incapacitated Robo back to Lucca for repairs. After all that, we're finally able to access the Gate, but it takes us somewhere unfamiliar, a small area called "The End of Time." This area functions as the game's hub between different time periods. From here, every time period is accessible.

It is here where I learn that the laws of jRPGs are far-reaching indeed, because I can only travel in groups of three, and everyone else has to stay in The End of Time, likely to be fondled by the creepy old man there (he's a bit TOO stoic if you ask me). I've been keeping Lucca and Robo back, keeping Marle as a permanent team member because of her healing. Here is also where I meat Spekkio, a helpful monster that's far more powerful than he looks. He's the guy who teaches everyone magic, so I used his services and even bested him for a Magic Tab. I leave this place and hit the teleport that takes me back to my time, but to the other continent that I've yet to visit.

As tranny said, this place is occupied by monsters weak to magic, so the game is treating this as a magic tutorial area. I melt, zap, and freeze my way through these minions with ease... until I confront Heckran, the area boss. Content with my usual Fedor combat style of "throw bombs until the other guy falls down," I was summarily wiped. My first death. I didn't realize that when in a defensive stance, Heckran counterattacks each hit with a devastating water attack. I figured this out the second time and beat him easily. After that, I made my way back to the Festival and took the original Gate to reappear in The End of Time. So uhhh... was that part of the game even necessary? I don't think I got any critical items or info, so maybe it was nothing but Magic 101.

Anyway, I then teleport to what I can only assume is my next area of interest, 65 million BC. So I'm here, I'm waiting for the Brian Peppers music I heard earlier in the game, and I'm stuck yet again. I've gathered each of the four items these ancient people are talking about (Horn, Pellet, Fang, Feather) but have no idea what to do with them.

If you're keeping Marle for healing you should swap her for Robo. Robo learns Heal Beam that heals all characters, which is ironic since Marle can only heal one character, despite her being the healer of the game.

Marle's only really good for Haste, but even that becomes obsolete with Haste Helms.

yeah, now that you have magic remember the earlier tip said - go every X0 and talk to Spekkio. be prepared for a tough fight each time, but you'll get items and tabs.

as for healing, don't worry about it too much. Marle is fine for now, but experiment as you can. remember that new moves learned means you'll probably unlock a dual tech or two along the way.

Did a fair bit of playing last night. Let me give ya'll the abridged version:

I left 65,000,000 BC after reading that it wasn't time to be there yet, but not before running through the Dactyl Nest. I spent a bit of time killing monsters here, so just like my FFVII run a few years back, I likely find myself overleveled. Ah well, not like I'm grinding on purpose.

Apparently, the next step in our adventure is to recruit Frog for good and stop Magus and his minions, all in the year 600 AD. Before recruiting Frog, I need to find the Masamune, the legendary hero's sword. Frog has the hilt in his home, and I find the actual blade in a cave. However, that just leaves me with a borked sword that needs repairing. Luckily, THIS sword comes with an instruction manual right on the blade!

M...e...l...c...h...i...o...r.

jRPGs, I really should spend more time with you. Melchior can mend this blade! Melchior lives in 1000 AD, so I warp back to Crono's time and explain to him my dilemma. While ol' Melch has the skill to mend my sword, he does not have the resources. He needs some Dreamstone, an ancient stone no longer available in the world. That's no problem for Crono and his Link-wannabees, as we now actually have a reason to visit 65,000,000 BC. We get there but are quickly ambushed by a group of low-leveled baddies. Right when all hope to stave off this mild annoyance seems lost, a scantily clad blond bombshell runs in to save the

whoa whoa WHOA

Who is THIS. This is Ayla - my newest and most favoritest party member - that's who. Ayla is our team's prehistoric representative, and man, does she ever fir the bill. She's dressed like an Amazon, outfoxes Marle (to The End of Time with you!) right out the gate, attacks with fisticuffs like a total badass, and unlike Tifa who does the same, I doubt she'll have a spine-shuttering meltdown in disk two. She also talks the way Arnold probably did when he first came to America. Oh, and she runs like a freakin' panther. Ayla strong! Ayla fight! Ayla total babe!

Ayla joins us to get some Dreamstone and recover our Gate Key (which was stolen by the vile lizard enemies when we first got here), Lucca's all-important invention that allows us to use the time Gates. However, at Ayla's request, we party it up with the Brian Peppers music first. I'm telling you guys right now, Magus better bring his A-game if he wants in my party over this chick. I can't remember the details, but we battle our way through a cave that ends in a boss fight against Nizbel, who is the right-hand beast of Azala, the leader of the despicable lizard clan. Kind of a tough fight here, but a pattern of lightning, physical attacks, and healing wins the day. Azala gives us the Gate Key, runs off, and we're done with this time period for now, having presumably picked up some Dreamstone along the way. I journey back to Melchior. Unfortunately, this means leaving Ayla here, as she's not a permanent party member yet. Soon, my dear. Soon...

Sad as it was to see my Amazon go, I'm excited at the idea of recruiting Frog permanently, which is my next step. I show him the repaired Masamune, and he joins! Now is also when I learn about Frog's backstory. He wasn't always a Frog, ya see. In fact, until about ten years ago, he was a young man named Glenn. Glenn was the snivel-nosed, weak-kneed, beta herb tag-along of Sir Cyrus, the super night that everyone in 600 AD lauds incessantly. Cyrus vowed to stop the forces of Magus, and Glenn tagged along to carry his clubs. Unfortunately, actually beating Magus is a lot harder than just flapping yer lips about it. Magus kills Cyrus immediately and, at the behest of Ozzie, his top underling, casts a spell to turn Glenn into Frog. Improvement, if you ask me. This tragic history is the source of Frog's self-doubt, but also fuels his determination to stop Magus. Kinda funny how I already knew most of this stuff. THANKS A LOT CJAYC.

I take Frog to the Magic Cave, and he opens the entrance with the powerful Masamune. Eventually, this leads us to Magus's castle, of which the entrance is dripping with a haunting atmosphere. These are some of the best visuals I've ever seen on an SNES, and I'm playing on a big HDTV, which probably makes them look worse. The classics still got it, folks.

The enemies in Magus's castle don't provide much of a challenge, further proof that I may have spent too much time fighting it up with the dinos. Even Flea the magician and Sir Slush (lol, you go Frog) fall without a great struggle. The rest of the castle sequence revolves around us chasing the cowardly Ozzie, Magus's top general. He sets traps that we pass with ease before he is out of options and places to hide. We get rid of him (though I presume he'll be back later) and make our way down to the deepest regions of this castle... down to Magus.

He is summoning something, but we break his concentration and it's time for a fight. Even Magus can't deal out very punishing blows unless he uses Dark Matter, his toughest attack. When he does, I simply respond with Aura Twirl, and it's back to attacking. It's a long fight, but I never felt in any real danger. We win after a while, and Magus starts cursing us, saying that Lavos is now on its way. Apparently, the idea that Magus created Lavos is all wrong. It is an ancient and all-powerful creature, and Magus merely summoned it. Squall's catchphrase goes here.

Lavos's imminent arrival causes earthquakes and chaos, and a huge Gate is opened and sucks the four of us (Crono's team and Magus) in. We awake to find ourselves back in 65,000,000 BC, though Magus is nowhere to be seen.

Anyway, now that we're here, we may as well make ourselves useful. This minor plot details of this portion are lost on me already, but we learn that Azala and her lizard people are doing some bad stuff and it's up to US to you know. I couldn't care less, I'm just happy that Ayla has rejoined my team! We fight up the Dactyl Nest and see that the red star, or LAVOS, is descending. So Lavos came to the world in 65,000,000 BC, and it had nothing to do with Magus. Squall, you know what to do!

We immediately make our way to lizard HQ to stop them for good. I use this place to hone my weapons and stock up on even better booty (I think I've been rocking some of the best equipment available throughout the game). We make our way atop this large compound for a climactic battle with Azala and her greatest beast, a god damned T-Rex. Fight takes freakin' forever, but once again, a steady pattern of healing and attack proves too strong. Right before we exit as the victors, the weakened Azala shares a premonition about Lavos descending and putting the world in an ice age. This premonition comes to pass, oh, about ten seconds later. Lavos crash lands pretty much right on the *****, causing a crater. We step inside the crater and find another time Gate, this time to 12,000 BC. I enter, go to the old man hub, and save. Enough for now, although I'm stoked to see that I'm now running a Frog/Ayla party for good. Magus wishes!

knew you'd like Ayla! wait until you get Falcon Hit.

it sounds like the Dactyl Nest might have ruined the battle with Magus. that's not a pushover fight normally (though it also isn't hard). there's a real sense of tension there between the music, the buildup and the fight. it sounds like you didn't fall for Magus there which means you probably won't for the rest of the game. it's for the better, I think, since Frog and Ayla are where it's at.
