It's not FFVIII (the ATB in that game is nuts, turning the speed up to highest is actually bad because Haste plus good junctions makes me get turns faster than I can hope to input commands <_<) but it's a far cry from FFIX. And it's only as un-interactive as you make it. I've played probably 80% of my FFXII time with anything beyond "attack" being manual for whichever character I generally control, and that makes it pretty active to me. Especially with all the MP restoration effects you have that let you actually use spells liberally for much of the game instead of having to always conserve them for boss fights out of intense paranoia of running out (or maybe that's just me). Man, I love FFVIII's ATB, so good.
And even though you have MP Restoration, I still found most spells that aren't buffs or healing spells to not really be worth casting. See, the thing for me is that FFXII feels slow. It doesn't matter if it is slow or not. It feels slow. Plus, more often than not, battles don't feel very...frenetic or lively. At least random encounters don't. I think part of it is that it feels like the characters don't run very fast. But I wait for my ATB gauge to fill, I attack, I run around waiting for it to fill again, if I choose to cast a spell, then I have to wait for THAT gauge to fill. And heaven forbid I should ever decide to go against my pre-set Gambits and reset the ATB completely just for doing so.
Like, I think that's one of the things FFXIII's battle system got right. It feels fast, it feels frantic, it feels hectic. Even though you're basically waiting for the ATB gauge to refill and you can just auto-pilot on auto-fight, the feel of fighting is good. -- "The great GF...Bahamut." "...GF? I...?
