according to rumours from retailers, Nintendo regarded Xeno etc as fanservice games. Apparently they didn't realise "wait people actually want this game" until it was too late.

I think there was supposed to be like 38k copies shipped for western europe or something...?

I know a guy who works at gamestop, was telling me each "shipment" they had for this game consisted of one copy per day. The dude at GAME said not to expect it on the shelves for some time as there was a backlog of a waiting list for it when they do trickle in.

Somebody really ballsed up their market research on this one.

Yeah, the GAME I went to had exactly one copy on launch day... and it was the one I'd preordered.

Stock shortages are often good for sales in the long term though, because it creates more demand and hype. Nintendo has been doing it on purpose before, most notably with the Wii.

UK it's not that surprising- non-nintendo wii games that aren't fitness sell even worse than they do in the US, normally- but France is some kind of jrpg haven, and the stock's supposedly out there as well. Thumbs up NoE.

I'm in Norway at the moment though, not the UK. And JRPGs sell like cupcakes in the UK compared to here. I think it has to do with nothing being translated in Norway, so no one grows up on JRPGs because they don't understand them until they're like 13. Which is only a good thing for Norwegian JRPG fans, of course!

err, i meant to say that i am using component cables and the game is displaying in wide screen, but it still looks kinda stretched. I dunno, might just be how the game looks.

It's not supposed to look stretched, so you're obviously doing something wrong. You realize you have to set the Wii to widescreen and not just display the game in widescreen on your TV right?

A deep breath of fresh air for an arguably stagnant genre, Xenoblade Chronicles is essential gaming for anybody with a flavour for role playing. It represents the absolute best of what traditional Japanese RPGs could be, and triumphantly what Japanese RPGs should be.

Oh, and here's an important tip!! Zomg zomg:

The completionists around here should be very careful about the quest in Frontier Village regarding the moonshine alcohol in the spring. Save before accepting it! If you don't, you risk inadvertedly making a wrong choice just by having the wrong items in your inventory. I just lost an hour of progress because of this. I googled some keywords from the quest and it seems it's a well known issue.

argh, dying on the final boss because my teammates' AI is crapp

*boss prepares fan range move*

*teammates stick side by side, despite the fact that one of those teammates is Sharla who shouldn't be nearby in the first place*



and right now, me and Sharla were dead, I had a full tension gauge, Dunban was standing on right on my body, but instead of reviving me he just goes "OH USING THESE THREE ATTACK ARTS IN A ROW TAKE PRIORITY", and he gets killed before reviving me

teammate comes running back to me to encourage me

teammate dodges fan attack thanks to my speed, but now I'm in range, die, gameover

Yeah, that's happened to me- the frontier village thing I mean, though Sharla deciding to run into AOEs is good stuff too! I think there's also a Colony 6 quest that's the same.

Yeah, the party members have completely horrible AI sometimes. Like, I was giving the point of no return a go yesterday, and I almost had <boss name> beat, then I accidentally died but with 2 party members standing and full Party Gauge... and instead of reviving me, they go hack at the boss while it charges a devastating attack that obviously kills them both.

The absolute worst thing is when you're fighting something near a ledge though, and your party members manage to FALL OFF to their death. Many long ardurous fights against unique monsters have been ended by Sharla or Melia suddenly deciding to take a dive. It's probably because they're programmed to keep away from the enemy, so they backstep right off the edge sometimes.

Another tragically hilarious AI fail happened today - Sharla(again) suddenly decided to RUN AWAY from a tough battle, and she had the aggro... so what happens? She lures the monster away outside its range, and I lose 15 minutes of hacking on a monster that's 10 levels higher than me. Augh!

hah I've got a story that's a combination of these

I was fighting Hox on those little island/pillar things on the lake of the Bionis Leg, it targetted my teammate with a major knockback move, completely booted them off into the lake. They still had the aggro, so the Hox tries to, somehow, completely leave the islands and go after the teammate that's way down in the lake. Runs out of its range and I have to start over

Yeah, that's happened to me too. I spent an age trying to beat one of those while at a very low level because I suspected they drop the Hox Daylight Spur needed for Colony 6. It was always a game of trying to single out one of them and keep it as far away from the others as possible while not going out of range, but even alone it was impossible to even hit. In the end I managed to beat one by spamming debuffs as Riki, and I didn't get the drop, neither did I get any of the "fight a higher level monster" achievements. Blarg.

I still don't know if they even carry that item.

yeah I just fought a level 72 boss at level 68 - that was good stuff. I'm pissed that I couldn't kill the level 68 unique before the area stopped being available though. I really really need some advanced manuals for heal techs with Sharla but am going FAQless for my first run through.

Personally I felt Sharla wasn't right for the final parts of the game. To me, it's more important whether the characters I use fit the story, so I used Shulk, Dunban and <spoiler>, but roleplaying aside, she's not that useful in battle either since all the characters can easily keep their HP up without any healer help, through Skills(healing by encouraging is a must), gems like Arts Heal and their own healing skills.

I used Sharla in the fights related to her though. Also I kept Gadolt's Rifle on her the whole way through because it feels right.

i basically just use the most defensive team since the game is more about surviving than doing pure damage. the only reason I'm not using Reyn is because of his oneliners that can just get brutal.

I really wanted to use Shulk, Dunban and the seventh, but they don't mesh well.

You don't think so? That's the team I was using, if I wasn't clear. It works perfectly for me. All three can take care of themselves, and you can easily Break-Topple-Daze-deal craploads of damage. Of course, you'll have to use defensive Art sets on them. Dunban's auto-revive skill is important, as are the strength/ether stealing, defensive and regen moves <spoiler> has.

level gap wasn't a good idea whoops. Didn't help that shield was one level lower than the abilities used whoops again

I haven't had very good luck with Dunban- sure he dodges a lot, but every attack that does hit seems to one shot him in the final areas. The ress aura just delays the inevitable. 7 however is some kind of monster (Gun D. best talent art) .
