Well, luckily his Batman voice I already have pinned down, I just read it in Kevin Conroy's voice.

I can't do that because Dick isn't Bruce, and while he's trying to imitate Bruce's voice, I know it's still not the same. And the truth is, Batman isn't actually supposed to sound like Kevin Conroy in comics, it's supposed to be a deeper, more guttural voice, but there's no way I could ever read Bruce Wayne lines in any voice other than Conroy's. Dick is different though, I imagine he uses a deeper voice, but it's been stated it's still not completely the same as the original Batman's, and that's one of the reasons Gordon was so easily able to realize it was a new Batman.

Fair enough.

I think the voice thing is one of the reasons I don't care for team books as much, because it's hard to remember every specific voice I have for them all, especially if they're characters I had to create a voice in my head for on my own.

Woops woops GOD DAMMIT KOOLAID GET IT INTO GEAR.

Deathstroke, written by Kyle Higgins with art by Joe Bennett and Art Thibert

http://dcu.blog.dccomics.com/new-52-deathstroke/

Description: Deathstroke the Ravager (AKA Slade Wilson to the Teen Titans cartoon fans out there) was at one time the best mercenary in the DC Universe, but most people probably just know him as "hey it's that guy that Rob Liefeld and Fabian Nicieza ripped off to make Deadpool". Unfortunately, Deathstroke's character has kind of gone through the ringer over the last near decade and he's been turned into everything from an anti-hero to an evil villain team leader to a super soldier who can somehow take out the entire Justice League single handily in their near prime. This book promises to take him back to his solo-work as DC's premier mercenary for hire, and make no mistake, there won't be any moral ambiguity here. The book's writer promises Wilson will be a VILLAIN, with no hidden reasoning or moral dilemma involved, he's going to be getting into some real gritty **** as long as the pay is right and he thinks he's gonna have fun doing it.

Creative Team: Kyle Higgins is new blood by any definition of the word and he has literally come out of nowhere to gain almost superstar status in just over a year and a half and nobody can seem to figure out how. Deals with the devil were apparently made. The 26-years old rookie wonder is showing a lot of promise and people should be excited that he's finally getting to make a name for himself by being put on some semi-important books. Don't be surprised if he's writing 3 or 4 Bat-titles down the line.

Joe Bennett is a completely competent artist who gets the job done well but he's not turning any heads right out the gate. Art Thibert is inking the book and his gratuitous use of shadows complements the tone of the book well. It's a nice 1-2 combo that shouldn't let anyone down.

external image

Ease of Access: Even if Deathstroke keeps all of his continuity the chances of it coming into play here are slim to none. There's some crazy **** there but most of it can easily and should be ignored.

Recommendation: Unlike most of the books in the relaunch this is actually a much simpler one to make a call on. Word on the street from the ever loose-lipped Higgins (seriously this guy just can't stop blabbing secrets on Twitter) is that the book isn't going to be based around arcs and that nearly every issue is going to be self contained with brief references to earlier stories to explain why he's doing something or going somewhere at most. Basically, you should be able to find out which issues are worth reading or skipping on a monthly basis without having to worry about getting lost in the story. So, yeah, it should be good, you'll probably end up WANTING to follow it monthly, but you won't have to. Win-Win situation.

Birds of Prey, written by Duane Swierczynski with art by Jesus Saiz

http://dcu.blog.dccomics.com/new-52-birds-of-prey/

Description: Birds of Prey is a girl power group. It's a team that has existed for quite a while, but it seems the only relation to the past series in the new one is Black Canary. She's an original of the team, but the other characters are new to the group. There's not much to know about the history. Barbara Gordon as Oracle was the leader, Black Canary pretty much the second in command, then there was a bunch of other characters that came and went, sometimes even men. Not often, it was predominantly women. And that trend will continue now.

As for the other three confirmed characters, one is a Japan born girl with a katana, she goes by the name Katana. The next is a classic Batman villain, you all may recognize Poison Ivy, she's sporting a nice looking redesign and it seems she'll still be considered an eco-terrorist, so it's not like she's gonna be a superhero all of a sudden. For the last character, we have Starling, wait, who? Exactly. She's a new character, we know virtually nothing about her, we'll find out how well she does.

Creative Team: First off, Birds of Prey has been written by Gail Simone for years now, one of the best comic book writers ever. So to follow her is going to be quite daunting, Swierczynski doesn't have a large backlog of comics, but she's apparently written a lot of books too, about half of them were fiction. So we know she's not new, she's got experience, and she's worked with a few well-known comic characters before. She may be following Simone, which means this book probably won't live up to anything the previous writer has done, but that doesn't mean it will be bad. There's certainly potential here, especially since it's practically a new team, new setting, and new adventure, plus this is the only place we'll get a fair amount of Poison Ivy exposure, which is always nice.

On that note, Saiz is a great artist, which will make Poison Ivy even better. He's got a nice comic cartoon style, but his style is spot on for these types of colorful characters. We only actually have on page so far, but it looks pretty good.

external image

Don't need the dialogue to see what's happening there.

And then he's got plenty of past work to look at, he's certainly nowhere near a bad artist, but he isn't always at the top of his game.

http://comicartcommunity.com/gallery/categories.php

Ease of Entry: As I said in the history, this team has been around for a long time, but with the exception of Black Canary, it's all new characters, as well as a new writer. It's unlikely that it will be tied to the past series at all, it's unclear if the Birds even existed before in the new Universe, it certainly seems like they just meet up by chance and decide to form the group. So basically, this series should be very easy to enter without any prior knowledge.

Recommendation: I would say yes for Black Canary and Poison Ivy, who are great characters, as well as Katana, who is relatively solid, and Starling has a chance to be good. The premise doesn't sound bad either, it's definitely possible this book will be good, especially if you haven't read any of Simone's work on the previous series, you won't have any expectations.

Static Shock, written by Scott McDaniel and John Rozum with art by Scott McDaniel and Andy Owens

http://dcu.blog.dccomics.com/new-52-static-shock/

Description: STATIC SHOCK! Everyone remembers his show. I remember watching the premiere when I was a kid and I had no idea who he was or why he got a show (answer: hip young minority hero helps sell our toys) BUT IT WAS INCREDIBLE. And I've never read a Static Shock comic. Chances are, neither have you! His origin from the show is basically accurate: Black kid gets caught up in a gang war and gets doused with chemicals! He doesn't lose his eyesite, but instead gets... electric powers? Huh. Alright. I can follow. Static's creator actually died recently, so hopefully DC is honoring him by making this book not garbage!!

Fun fact: Static was originally developed to be a Marvel hero. NOW HE HAS HIS OWN DC ONGOING TAKE THAT BENDIS

Creative Team: I don't know why Scott McDaniel is getting top billing as a writer here. He's more an artist, and while he is drawing (most) of this book, I find it's strange he's also writing, because I can't find anything on him being a writer before this. That isn't BAD, as he's been in the business for quite a while and has probably read so many comic scripts that he knows a thing or two about it. His art is pretty solid. He draws people really well but his backgrounds are always kinda bland, so expect lots of cool character detail (even if his faces are a bit weird sometimes). Maybe the other artist will draw backgrounds?

John Rozum is the other writer, and he wrote Xombi which LtM can't shut up about, so I guess he's good? He also writes kid's books, which is cool because this is for a young audience.

Andrew Owens (born 15 October 1989 in Liverpool) is an English footballer who plays for Southport in the Conference National. I have no idea who the Andy Owens on art is but apparently this other Andy Owens plays the football. APPARENTLY HE IS AN INKER

Ease of Access: HELL YEAH STATIC SHOCK. If you watched the show, you're set. If you didn't, well... It's not complicated. Static had such a small, contained universe that even if any of his old stuff carried over it wouldn't be that much to learn.

Recommendation: Static is cool, yeah? I dunno about the writer being the artist that hasn't written much and the backup writer only being known for being LtM's idol and the inker being an English footballer... BUT IT IS STATIC SHOCK DAMMIT. If you want it then you want it. I'll probably read the first issue. If you grew up with the show you at least owe Static that much!

This is a terrible list. One of the issues people have with comics is that, with the amount of characters, books, and continuity over the last 5 decades, attempting to read comics is incredibly overwhelming. Giving a list of several hundred books to someone wanting to get into comics is more likely to turn that person off than motivate them to read every single one.

They were actually pretty good but I would never recommend them or anything.

I think they were the KOTOR comics? In name only, they had nothing to do with KOTOR.

Also that guy co-writing Batwoman has written like 300 Star Wars books.

Powers and Invincible are books I think you might dig, give 'em a go I say. Also, DC and Marvel are great, but if you're getting into comics its pretty easy to hop onto Image, Dark Horse books, etc too. Since they're self contained more often than not.

That was a crazy series and very much a creation of the 90's. Dark and anti-hero-ish
