At this point there is no real reason to merge with any Japanese dev other than Nintendo. Capcom is pretty much the entire Japanese market outside of Nintendo.

People hate on them a lot lately, but Capcom has been a standout Japanese third-party this gen. They've done well to adapt to the changes this gen brought on, and it's paid off in a big way for them compared to other Japanese publishers that have fallen off the map compared to last gen. I'm not sure they're going about these Western partnerships the right way (Ninja Theory and Slant Six aren't exactly going to make the next 90+ review score, 5+ million seller), but it's not a bad idea from their perspective. They're right about the growth not coming from Japan, and it'll probably be that way for a good while. It does kinda suck because it'll make them less likely to approve something like Okami, but I believe they've said all original IPs will still be developed by their internal teams, which is good news.

Yeah. SE made out pretty well buying Eidos. I saw some article earlier saying the Montreal branch of the company plans to expand to 700 employees in the next few years. Pretty crazy. That seems to be working out very well for them.

personally I like Square's move today - Eidos Montreal is now up to 680 employees. Final Fantasy is being left behind, kinda.

Capcom has been putting into practice all gen, I think. They had some early Western tieups for games like BCR, though some of those ended up bombing. I think they've done a pretty good job of getting the most out of their franchises -- Resident Evil and Street Fighter IV are 5+ million selling games worldwide, Monster Hunter has locked down Japan. Gotta work on those DLC practices, but the reason they keep doing that stuff is probably because it makes them easy money. 18 million map packs for COD how can you argue with that.

Eidos had plenty of good assets anyway.

Japanese comapnies are gonna struggle to find something as good as Eidos with Warner and EA and all the other major western companies buying up the remaining stuff.

Stuff like Dead Rising has been popular and well-received, that's a very Western-oriented franchise. I think the Eidos purchase will be great down the line, but right now it's more or less Deus Ex. Still gotta wait and see on Tomb Raider and Thief, but those are much bigger brands than the sort of games Capcom has been working on, so yeah, I'd agree.

Square's got so much stuff. they publish COD in Japan which is way more popular than you'd expect. they've got Dungeon Siege, Kane and Lynch, Hitman -- tons of stuff really. it's telling when you see an e3 lineup from them and it's all western stuff.

Well, that's what they mean by "partnerships," I think. They're not looking to buy Western developers, just work with them on games. I guess that could mean collaborating on new games, but their line a while back was that sequels would be given to interested Western teams and new IPs (games like Dragon's Dogma) would be developed in Japan.

Honestly, I'm kind of on-the-fence about it. FFXII's world was more my style and it had some remarkable writing but I can't help but feel its plot fell on its face after a certain time. Otherwise there's been no Square Enix game I've played since 2001 that fits the bill, really. I've played a good few but I haven't yet touched NIER. I might change my mind then.

Crisis Core just didn't do it for me man. It had a few undeniably good moments but it just lost itself in a silly, silly plot.

Yeah, it definitely was. I still believe it fell off the deep end a bit though. I wish Daisuke Watanabe had the chance to put all the scenes he'd envisioned into the game. He's no Matsuno but at that point Matsuno was gone. It was up to him to get as much into the shell as possible in a short time period and he wound up with a lot on the cutting room floor.

It's just the weakest mainline game they've put out since they joined up with Sony.

Well, there's X-2 if you want to count that as mainline, but I'd argue those are fairly close anyway!

Yeah, it isn't perfect, but I really got into it. The first couple of weeks after it came out in Japan is when I got it and a PSP, good times. It hooked me in a way old Square games used to but newer ones haven't.

FFXII was really good, too. That one isn't perfect either, but it's more enjoyable than FFX and FFX-2.
