I gotta wonder how Team Ico even stays in business. Their last game was 6 years ago, and it didn't exactly light up the charts. The Last Guardian got revealed in 2009, and we still don't even have a real gameplay trailer yet.

They're a division of Sony Japan, and carry a certain level of prestige that offsets their long development time and budget expenses, so they don't have to worry about the financial situation like other studios might. The only have a team of about 50 people, too, so it's understandable.

they're saying on neogaf that Monster Hunter Tri G won't have online

so it's just like every other handheld MH but with no avenue to use adhoc this time <__>

I wonder if the Vita MH will have the same fate. Capcom doesn't seem to like to bother with making online for their games unless there's an infrastructure already in place. If I recall they want players to actually play together, rather than just connecting to people online. Fine for Japan, not so much for us!

I'm not sure how it works on the 3DS, but Vita has been built around having a great online infrastructure. I can't imagine a Monster Hunter on Vita will stick to local multiplayer only. At least as far as Vita is concerned, I think the days of games having local multiplayer only are long gone.

Speaking of, Sony's holding a pre-TGS press conference on the 14th, a day after Nintendo. It'll be livestreamed and liveblogged -- http://www.siliconera.com/2011/09/08/sony-to-hold-pre-tgs-press-conference-as-well/

Maybe. I can't say I follow Monster Hunter developments too closely. I would guess that Vita would be easier to work with compared to the 3DS, as far as creating and supporting an online experience. It has all the functionality of PSN on the PS3. Tough to say with Capcom, and I'm not sure what their approach is with Monster Hunter. It's a misstep not to put real online in there if they can, even if Japan doesn't demand it in the same way America or Europe does.

Yeah, those PSP Remasters are basically games run through an emulator created by Sony. They can look better, they can get control tweaks, but for the most part, they're the same as the PSP games only running on a PS3. If they do a port of the PS3 version onto Vita, it probably wouldn't have real online. Capcom really getting all they can out of MH3.

I wonder how many sales were during that 2-3 day period when you could buy an Ambassador 3DS for $170.

I'm not surprised about the PS3, I think they've marketed it into being a tough sell right now. It's selling OK, don't get me wrong.

Well, a $50 price drop was never going to completely change the game. I don't know that $250 becomes a much more enticing price point over $300 for people who didn't want one before. It'll do better during the holidays by being cheaper, but it isn't going to set the world on fire. The PS3's problem right now, in America, is that it doesn't have a big casual catch like the 360. It's not the go to for people who want to play dance games.

I think Sony miscalculated with Move, about how much people would care about real accuracy with motion controls. Its been successful enough, and it's the most legitimate motion controller in terms of giving you pinpoint accuracy, but that's not what the casual audience wants. I was always pretty down on Move versus Kinect, from a sales perspective, because it felt too much like an evolution of the Wii, where Kinect was lowering the barrier of entry even further and completely removing the controller.

Current sales between the PS3 / 360 would look very similar without Kinect. Before it came out, the PS3 was selling more on a monthly basis -- and that's still the case worldwide. I wouldn't call it the go to console in America, but its fortunes certainly shifted when the Slim came out. The 360 owes its current successes to Kinect more than anything. I think Microsoft had the right product at the right time, when the Wii was fading away, and swooped up that big casual market. Sony should probably just keep doing what they're doing now. It's not a bad idea to focus on the more 'hardcore' experiences, just to differentiate themselves from the route Nintendo and Microsoft have taken. Move just isn't going to turn into that breakout device that wins over casuals in a significant way, not in America.

Yeah, I'd agree. I can understand why they still push it, but it's never going to get people to buy PS3s. I don't know that Nintendo's tablet controller is even really going to be good enough to pull people away from Kinect. Microsoft has something good there.

Sony and Microsoft are going to get some nice lessons learned about the next gen, thanks to this Wii U. HD Zelda with some touchscreen map interface will be cool, but I'm really looking forward to what the other two companies figure out. there's a lot of products out there, from handhelds to smart phones to touchpads to waggle gimmicks to Kinect and so on. A lot of ideas about how different people play games.

In today's day and age there will always be a market for like 25+ million people to just stick a game into a console and play. The focus now seems to be on expanding the market, but I think there's room to sell product to typical gamers. Upstream is a myth, but they've done a decent job with downstream selling. Outside of some exclusives and pricing, what really separates a 360 from a PS3? I have both, like both, play on both, no real big difference in the experience (I prefer 360 controller but I am happy with either one). I'll be curious to see if the companies try and do something (outside of marketing and advertising) to really dominate the typical gamer audience, or if that can even really be done.
