Maybe he felt a bit of pressure following up such a light-hearted, well-respected run. Does the world need two Legion books that aren't written by Mark Waid? What about Hawk and Dove? Grifter? Captain Atom? Grifter has potential in trade, and I like that we have a Grifter book, but that first issue was...not good. Can't say I disagree with the rest. His style really does not work for a filler artist, though, so I imagine we'll see him take over for arcs or working on new minis sometime soon. I'm trying to think of books Janin can do the art for where it won't look weird besides JLD...and I'm not coming up with much. It might be introductory issue fatigue, it might be my reading of Northlanders Vol. 2 just prior, but Grey and Palmiotti made a mistake with the point of view character, Dr. Arkham, in this book. The second trade of Northlanders is a significant step down from the first, but one of the aspects Wood nailed was establishing the antagonist, Ragnar Ragnarsson, entirely through his clinical observations of his subject/rival. There's passion in Ragnar's letters to his King. Ragnar's motivation is clear, but not revealed directly through exposition. He's composed both in writing and stature, but when confronted with the savage killings of his rival, loses just a bit of that composure, and rather than taking up a splash page looking out upon the Irish vista with his chest out, he's hunched forward in a tiny panel on the bottom of the page under the cover of dead trees. He's alive. I don't get that in Arkham at all. Maybe it's not introductory fatigue. I'm fine with inner monologues, observations, and the like when done well. Xanadu was great in JLD. She was appropriately eerie and pithy. Arkham, however, is so wooden, and interrupts at every opportunity. It slows the story down considerably. I'd say that All Star Western is exposition heavy, but that implies there was something to expose. Moritat was the bright spot in this issue at least. He's an effective, efficient storyteller. I'm confident that this issue could've been silent, and you would not miss out on anything important. I'm still confident in this book. G&P are a solid team, the concept of the book has me intrigued, and I'm a sucker for secret societies. This is probably just a misstep. ps yes i can and will compare every dc book to something brian wood wrote. birds of prey was okay but would be ten times better if zee hernandez was in it -- Love is better than anger. At any rate, Wolverine was just outside the Top 5 back in 2007, so with the increase in voter turnout he seems to get more votes. Plus, he's had some awesome recent comics like Jason Aaron's run(the latest issue was GREAT) and Uncanny X-Force, and he now he's got this awesome new series coming out in October, a new movie, etc. i think Wolverine was #2 on my list. i first started to love him like all the other kids back in the day, watching the cartoon and seeing him be awesome. He's Clint Eastwood, if Clint Eastwood was ALSO a ninja badass. Impossibly manly, but still a very human character at his core, like the best Marvel characters. Something we all experience and identify with. He’s a drunk and a killer. He’s anti-social. He has anger management issues. He struggles daily with the mistakes of his past. His relationships make him a sympathetic character. His sulking over Jean and Scott, his tenderness with Mariko, Jubilee, and Kitty, his drinking buddy Nightcrawler, and fatherly sternness with Amiko all create an picture of a man who loves and is loved. He is the classless biker with the soul of a Samurai. He is the unforgiving killer and the protective patriarch figure. He is insanity and often the voice of reason. he's the best at what he does, even if its not very nice. -- You know who's sexy?
