Yeah, New York fans are a different situation from living in the middle of no-where in between Pittsburgh and Buffalo.

How do you explain the New York fans that like both the Mets/Yankees and Giants/Jets? Why is it unreasonable to assume that someone who didn't grow up on the Steelers could dislike them through jealousy?

No, I was making a joke.

I became a Yankees/Jets fan partly because I like the history of both teams better. The most storied franchise of all time and the ultimate underdogs.

My friends who are Mets fans chose them because Shea Stadium was a much easier drive, and then they decided to root for the Giants so they could have some glory every once in a while.

And for the record, as much as I troll both fanbases I will always root for the Mets/Giants when not facing the Yanks/Jets.

But if they do it, why is it unreasonable for them to hate the more successful team? Or why isn't it completely okay for them to do this as long as the teams are ones that they can PUT ON FOR THEIR CITY about?

I would never call your hatred of the Giants (born out of jealousy) unreasonable.

You guys aren't following my logic here and I'm having trouble finding a way to illustrate it better for you.

As someone who became a sports fan very late in life (23), and who divorced his local NFL team almost immediately, I've often wondered if I should have "replaced" the Lions with another team. I never have and I still love the NFL.

Although to be fair I like MLB and the NBA more, two leagues in which I do have an actual rooting interest, so maybe finding some team to call your own really can enhance the experience.

I never said anything about your allegiances.

There are three legit reasons for rooting for a non-local team imho

1. You live too far from any real team to have a regional allegiance
2. Your parent raised you to like a certain team
3. You moved / your local team moved and you retained your fandom regardless

Anything else is chalked up to bandwagoning, plain and simple.

no im not. It's the fact that you say you love the rams yet foolishly would cheer for their arch rival in the superbowl because you have some chilidish hate for the steeler fans (who are the same fans your beloved penguins have btw. I'd venture a HIIIGHHH percent)

the same way you admitted earlier this year you'd cheer for the sox over the phils if that was the WS. don't deny it, you said it 15 times at least. That's TERRIBLE sports attitude. You never cheer for the arch rival because you have some misplaced hate. I hate philly too. I hate that city with such a passion but still, they're NOT our rivals. How does this not make you a tiny bit bad is beyond me. It's terrible logic. I'm not 100% right on everyone having to stick to an arbitrary line of sports fandom based on location, but at least have some consistency if you're going to deviate. You don't, as evidenced up above. How on EARTH do you cheer for the Sox over the Phils in that situation. HOW

I can justify it pretty easily. The Sox have already won a couple recently, them winning another wouldn't be as bad as that f***ing c*** Cliff Lee winning one at all.

It might be a little misplaced but that does not seal the deal and make me a bad sports fan. Not even close.

Holy crap Swift I wouldn't cheer for the Sox in any other situation but that one HYPOTHETICALLY awful situation. In reality I'd say what I said every time Barca/United played each other or like I said when the Sox played the Phils earlier in the year. Cheering for a massive earth splitting quake to cause the stadium to be swallowed up.

But if I had to choose. If I had to make that awful, awful decision, wanting Cliff Lee to lose superceeding my Red Sox hatred is not totally unreasonable like you're making it out to be.

I don't have an excuse for that, I guess. My response would be that I'm not a normal Rams fan.

However the Seahawks/Rams rivalry doesn't run quite as deep. You forget that the Seahawks haven't been an NFC West team for all that long. If I had to make that decision again, I'd probably go differently, and if you remember I was extremely upset about that Super Bowl at the time. It was also made easier by the inherent screw job that went on. Same way as with the Cardinals. They're a division rival too but you're not upset that I wanted them to beat the Steelers.

Dude 1996 was 15 years ago. How can you even think to call someone a bandwagoner if they've been a consistent fan for 15 years? It's not their fault the Yankees have just been consistently great.

I got called a bandwagoner at my last job by my boss when the Orioles had their half a good season a few years back (1st place at the all star break, finished the season something like 27 games out of 1st lol)! Literally called a bandwagoner for being an Orioles fan.

Either way, they only cheer for the Yankees because they are great is the thing. If they Yankees and the Mets roles were reversed (lol Mets), they'd all be Mets fans. I saw a lot of people here in NYC change sides from Mets to Yankees actually after the Subway Series.

As far as the 15 years thing goes, people my age were 15 years old in 1996. That's old enough to have been watching the Yankees when they were struggling before Jeter/Rivera/Pettitte broke out. My brother is a Yankee fan that was rooting just as hard for Paul O'Neill, Don Mattingly, and scrubs like Alvaro Espinoza and Mike Pagliarulo as he does for the team now. So you'll excuse me if I laugh at Yankee "fans" who have no idea who Stump Merrill, Dallas Green, and Buck Showalter are.

rooting for teams in new york is different from anywhere else in the states (except california and maybe texas) because if you're a jets/yankees fan your neighbor on one side is a giants fan and on the other side is a mets fan. you gotta see these people every day. in minnesota, everybody is a twins/vikings fan.
