It's an hour long, so fair warning right now.

I'm 25 minutes into it right now....

Don't have time to watch, but the concept seems silly. I would not dare let anyone who hasn't at least taken some chemistry labs anywhere near nitrogen triiodide. <_<

Well more or less...

The whole "You need college for a successful career/people with college degrees will make more than people who don't" is a lie to get you to spend money, the way the system is set up is pretty much indentured servitude, how students were easily able to afford college in the 70s, college degrees are mostly useless, etc.

I'm not the best at summing things up..

Ehh. It might be true in some fields, but no chance in hell it applies to my major, chemistry.

Forcing everyone to take Communications and whatnot is dumb, but it's not conspiracy level, imo.

Yeah I mean, college isn't necessarily to be successful in a lot of fields, but most things math/science related it is very much necessarily.

Not really a conspiracy though...

Used cars have an inherent value.

That value varies based on the particular used car and the value can further be heavily influenced by the user (how it is used, dedication to maintaining investment). Thus it is not an appropriate purchase for some people.

Used car salesman are good at advertising and salesmanship and convince people that they need something even if they don't.

I get craploads of money from my school in the form of a check that I spend on whatever I want... but I don't take loans, I get financial aid. Does that count?

Also I'm not going to college to get my name printed on a piece of paper, I need to learn skills, though I guess it's different with engineering.

To be fair, I don't pay a huge amount of attention to smurf, so I don't really recall "smurf logic" at the moment.

Some parts of the video really gets to me though... the whole college debt thing, I really don't want to spend the rest of my life just working off debt, and sometimes I feel like the "investment" I've given so far isn't worth the money that has to be paid for it.

But of course I need to be taught to do whatever I want to do in life, and I don't want to flip burgers.

College tuitions are probably going to continue to rise as education becomes more and more essential to good employment in this country. Manufacturing jobs are going away to other countries and never coming back.

It is pretty crazy that US universities are pretty expensive. I go to UBC (ranked between 30-40 in the world) and my undergraduate will probably end up costing 40k. From what I heard a similarily ranked school for a US citizen would cost twice as much.

Maybe for useless degrees. College is necessary for people who want to study math/science. You're not going to learn the same thing from a library book as you are from professors, labs, groups, etc.

US universities are the best in the world in research. They have a large majority of all Nobel Prizes in the past few decades. The tuition goes to fund research, which produces prestige for the school, which makes its graduates more employable. People will pay a lot for prestige. If you don't want that, you generally can go to state schools for a lot less.

Also, most people don't actually pay sticker price. A lot of that money collected from rich and upper middle class students goes to financial aid for poorer students. Then there are also merit scholarships.

Even for useless degrees, liberal arts, etc., you're not paying for just knowledge as much as you are the entire experience of college. This isn't a bad thing considering concrete life experiences, relating to educational subjects of not, almost always outweighs raw knowledge in terms of importance to life and career.

The video does have a point though, the real problem is the whole No Child Left Behind. They are funneling idiots into colleges, which is what causes these problems. Higher educations is an excellent place for people who want to learn, but idiots will not succeed no matter where they are thrown. It's pretty harmful to have such a system in place for the majority of a child's life when the real world is so raw and animalistically survival of the fittest.

Ugh God don't even get me started on this. My mom is an avid Glenn Beck follower. Do you know what she told me the other day?

Her: "People graduating college think they deserve a job just because they have a degree. The need to earn the right to have a job."
Me: (automatically ****ed since, you know, I just ****ing graduated and can't find a job) "Well mom, what are people suppose to do to earn a job? Tell me. What can I do to earn a job?"
Her: "You need to earn it!"
Me: "What was I doing in school for four years while I was busting my butt working day and night? Not sleeping for two or three days finishing a project? I'm pretty sure I was earning my right to have a job. That's kind of what a degree is. It says hey, look at me, I did all this work to a satisfactory level, and now I'm ready to try my hand at the real world. So what else should I do to earn it?"
Her: "Go out and find one!"
Me: "What?"

Seriously. I'm a fiscal Republican/social Moderate, but I'm sorry. Glenn Beck is nothing but a fear monger.

Really needed to get that off my chest. But yeah, in conclusion, is the system ****ing flawed? Hell yes. Is it a conspiracy? **** no. Really? Come on.

I dunno if college is a good investment for the median person though. If you just give an 18-yr-old 200k instead of college, I imagine a lot of people would take the 200k. And if they made decent investments with that and lived frugally, they could conceivably live on that the rest of their lives without working.

I'm not wrong. And I listen to him everyday on the radio and GBTV.

Wait weren't you gonna be an architect? I can't imagine there's a lack of jobs in that field nowadays...

The field is slightly better than it was 5 years ago, but that mostly means firms just aren't laying off the people they already have. There's no money to bank roll big infrastructure projects, which is what entry level architects like myself would be hired to work on (grunt CAD/Design work and stuff). So yeah. No one is building so no one is hiring. I actually might get a job at a sign design company though, so fingers crossed! At least it would be in the design field.

They've got certain points that I've been saying for years, but they present it such an extremist, smartmuffin-esque way that it just makes them look like dumb asses.

Some people have no idea what the word subtlety is, and think the best way to get a point across is to pretend the other side of the argument is literally evil, and the sky is falling.

That is what I think of this video.

Yeah, tuition in the US is freakishly high, and there are definitely predatory schools out there which will give you a degree but not actually require talent from you--they just want the money.

I'm already aware of most of the statistics in that video, like student loan debt having surpassed credit card debt.

They're absolutely right about No Child Left Behind being terrible, and causing teachers to teach to a test, reducing the quality of education.

US Education is pretty broken right now.

I don't agree with the anti-education stance of the video, however--I still think education is valuable. But it shouldn't cost what it costs, and it should be higher quality.

EDIT: so now they're saying the government should not be subsidizing education--I don't agree with this, but I do agree that the government should not be funding private corporations--there should be high quality public schools (which there are).

Now they're talking about schools spending billions of dollars on construction projects like stadiums and new libraries that don't really add much to the quality of education; it depends, sometimes more library space is needed, but...as a general rule: agree.

EDIT: hating on college sports, and college coaches getting millions of dollars, and even very small colleges getting into this game. Sure, I can get behind this.
