Welcome to the opening round of the Best OST Contest, where we decide the best game soundtrack by voting on the songs in it.
Match Rules: * You must listen to both songs in the match. Use the provided links. * You must vote on the songs in the match. Not the game's overall music. Not how much you like the game itself. ***VOTE ON THE SONGS*** * To help enforce rule 2, All votes must be given for the song title, not the game or the seed number. No exceptions.
Other details: * The match will last 24 hours from the time this thread is posted. Regardless of when the next day's topic goes up, or when the current topic actually gets counted and closed, votes count up to 24.0 hours after the match's beginning. * Normal contest rules apply regarding alts, rallying, multi-voting, etc. * No mid-thread tallies, or comments related to a vote count. It can influence the voters. Regardless of how excited you may be, please let things evolve naturally. * If there are two matches, you do not have to vote for both. If you want to change your vote, please identify that it is a change to your vote. Do not erase the old vote. * Advanced voting is allowed. Contact me with your vote by PM. Check the spreadsheet for the appropriate songs to listen to: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AoS8GGHS9FDGdFprRGpQa3ZtRGcwTTM5VTQ2SWViUGc&hl=en_US * Re-read the third rule. Votes naming only the game will not be counted.
The spirit of this contest is a bit different from what you might be used to in a contest. Upsets are expected. The tournament will be double elimination, so if you're favorite game loses here, it isn't done. You can see the rest of the rules on the contest or figure out how the heck we got to where we are here: http://www.gamefaqs.com/boards/8-gamefaqs-contests/60522913

Might wanna fix that for the next day (it should be "your").
As for the matches:
Forest Interlude The Moon-Dwelling Demon

Second match >> First match. I swear The Landing's gotten better since VGMC3/4 too. Maybe it's because the beginning lulls me to sleep, but since I'm wide awake right now I didn't miss the later parts. Note that even with the inequality above, all songs are good - it's just that two are pretty awesome and the other two are simply fine.

"use of the soundchip" is a bit of a misnomer, the SNES didn't generate waveforms, it's all samples. it is programmed about as skillfully as anything on the SNES though, I think the DKC series might represent the best SNES music sequencing overall, so much meticulous attention to detail

<3 6/8, compound time is ridiculously underused
That's Rock 'n Roll Racing probably, but DKCX is still pretty quality too.

first impression is that DKC is better, much more adept use of panning and delay, better samples...actually nevermind SNES, there aren't too many other musicians I know of that use panning and delay as fluidly as david wise does in any genre
I vote for Donkey Kong Country 2 and Final Fantasy VIII because I enjoy their soundtracks more overall, despite the selections being weaker today. Also, this being a contest to determine the best OST, I feel forcing voters to decide on only one song that does not in any way represent the soundtrack as a whole, is a terrible way to run this.

First match was really not an issue for me to pick. Forest Interlude did little to impress me, while I found Mortvia Aqueduct to be a catchy and entertaining piece. As for the second, that was hard. I really love The Landing, but The Moon-Dwelling Demon is just a great piece. So it edged out, but it was close. I would have gladly voted The Landing in many other situations.

You laugh at my Celtic Guardian, until I use my Scapegoat, and then United We Stand, Mage Power, and 3 Axe Of Despairs, with Gaia Power out. 11900/7800

You had more than enough time during the planning stages to express your opinions.
But here's the problem with voting on the "overall" OST -- how do you decide? Everyone will use very different criteria. I mean, yes, obviously everyone has different opinions, but even beyond that. Consider...
Game A has 3 excellent songs and the rest of the soundtrack is respectable, but nothing stands out. Game B has songs that are all above the line, but nothing that is truly iconic.
Which are you going to pick -- Chrono Cross (A) or Chrono Trigger? (B)
Now, let's add to it games that only have a couple songs to them. If their two songs are really good, why, that means the entire soundtrack is excellent, doesn't it? By that standard, shouldn't Monty on the Run win?
Once you start throwing in subjectivity, people are going to make claims like "well, I liked FF6's music, except I think Terra is horribly overrated and I can't stand listening to Dancing Mad." So because of those two songs, or maybe just one of them, that song gets dragged through the mud.
The bottom line is we have to pick *some* way to decide. This is a much more interesting and entertaining way to arrive at a conclusion. And ultimately, isn't it more about the journey than the destination? Otherwise, we would just run a poll, and no tournament would be needed.
i don't see a problem with a subjective way to judge OSTs. what's wrong with everyone deciding for themselves their own criteria? i mean, i think it's a lot more likely to end up with the true favorite OST as the winner than this, and i would have preferred it myself.
i see this as sort of like... hurt & heal where the results aren't meant to be accurate whatsoever, but still could be fun.
