Are we seriously regressing as an industry when it comes to exports? "You didn't outsell our flagship franchises, so we're f***ing up your chances of ever getting popular."
Seems like the only company I can trust to export anything these days is Atlus.
Granted, they said whether or not it would be a downloadable title on the Vita isn't final yet, but I doubt we'd get a localization in that case.

jrpgs are going extinct. Not only is the formula archaic, but the developers/publishers are some of the dumbest people out there. It has been this way this entire gen.

You've never played a Valkyria Chronicles game, have you?

Last I checked, VC on the PS3 sold a good half million, which isn't bad at all.
Don't know about VCII sales figures, but they weren't anywhere near that much.
So according to Sega, the best idea was to make ANOTHER PSP game only this time, shut out a portion of the audience willing to buy your stuff, instead of putting it on a platform it would excel on.
And VCII had a lot of improvements over the first game, so that it was relegated to the PSP is a damn shame.

Nope, and have absolutely no interest in it at all either. Just throwing the facts out there.

One of the more important things that isn't mentioned here is that Sony is discouraging companies from releasing UMDs after the Vita releases, and if we were to get it, it probably would come out here after Vita. Spending the money localizing a PSN only release on an old system may be seen as a waste of resources.
Bingo. Anime style strategy... gross. Thank god it's not being released in my country!

VC2 didn't sell well in the West because it's a ****ing high school comedy. I still bought it, it's got some good ideas, but the structure the gameplay is built around is anathema to anyone outside Japan.
VC3, being an actual WAR game again, looks much better, and would probably sell if Sega dropped the number and pretended II didn't happen.
Or port it to PS3, like Peace Walker HD.

This piques my interest. Do you need to play the first to play the 2nd, since I don't have a PS3?

Probably not, although the setup for the plot revolves entirely around a MASSIVE spoiler for the first game, so unless you're certain you're never going to play it, I'd advise not starting with the second.
It's not much like Persona, if that's what you're thinking of. There's no socialising, just a load of text cutscenes of stereotypical anime characters worrying about lessons, interspersed with missions. The combat's great, the school stuff's boring.

I don't really mind if its like Persona or not, but I'm a big anime fan (bigger than video games these days) and those tropes sound right up my alley with the stuff I like in anime. I actually play visual novels more these days than normal games due to these reasons.
Whether you like animeish school type settings or not you should play the first one before it no questions asked-- the writing is just better. The first one has some animeish qualities to it too, they're just a lot more subdued.

If anything, I'd just watch the anime of the first... since I don't plan on getting a PS3 anytime soon. Has anyone watched the anime to know if its a good enough representation?

It's terrible and I regret watching it. It basically changes the focus from a war story with a love story in the backgrouund to a love triangle that doesn't exist in the original game with a war in the background.

I might've been slightly intrigued just for interest's sake if it was Welkin + Alicia + random minor character just because more characterization of the minor characters would be is cool even if it was false characterization (though some guys and girls could work there without it being too much of a stretch). Hell Welkin + Alicia + Selvaria would've been potentially hilarious.
Faldio is just dumb though.

I couldn't agree more with your comments on VC2. I also bought it, knowing how much I loved the first game and hoping that it was more of the same, only to be severely disappointed in its departure from the excellence of the first game's premise and characterization. The plot and character development was turned into something akin to where bad anime cliches go to die.
I haven't bothered looking up any of the info on VC3. I don't want to get myself worked up about a title that I'll likely never get to play. (I don't speak Japanese, so I don't import games)
From: KimPilgrim | #029 VCII was a pile of ****, and did everything worse than the first game. But they brought it over.
I disagree on at least two points.
For one, the class system was more involving and made it so every member of your squad could fill a unique role. You avoid scenarios such as in VC where the best sniper, hands down, was Marina because she had all the stats and traits for the job. It also added a lot of variety, which I always welcome. The method of ranking classes up, however, was f***ing ridiculous and whoever thought it was a good idea was hopefully fired immediately after release.
While I wouldn't argue that most of the characters were better in VCII, I will say that I appreciated the game giving them some more depth in the form of special missions. A lot of them were half-assed and exist only to cheese out random drops, but with better design, they would work. But still, it was good to see you get to know your squad instead of them just being a who's who of anime stereotypes... okay, they were still like that, but I appreciate the effort all the same.
The game has a lot of cool ideas, as Jawa said, but the execution was poor. But I'm a firm believer in "it's the thought that counts."

VC2's main flaw was the story. It had a terrible plot and it only had one good character(the almighty Elvis Lancer). The gameplay itself? Eh, I liked that.

This is what happens when games are made for the LOL PSP. When are companies going to learn? That disaster should have been abandoned years ago.
Edit: Also, this new trend of making main line sequels of console games on portables needs to stop immediately.

PSP sold almost as much as all 3 consoles combined in Japan. Its not very viable for American companies to make handheld games, but for Japanese companies, its low budget + a much larger player base you're selling it to. It makes a lot of sense, actually.
-No advertising support. Why would you later complain that no one bought your game if the most you'll do for it is to mention it on your blog? Did you really think you could get millions of copies from that?
-Moved the second game to PSP. It seemed like a good idea at the time, since Sega didn't want to lose more money on another PS3 game. Yet, the PS3 sales of VC improved over time as more people bought PS3s, and the engine was now already built, meaning VC2 on the PS3 would have cost less than VC1 did. Factor that in with a larger PS3 fanbase and a great critical reception, VC2 would have been poised to break even, if not profit. Instead...they moved it to a cheaper platform that no one outside of Japan had. So of course the sales tanked; they only made this move with the bottom line in mind.
-Cancelled the third game. Because of the bottom line frame of mind, they didn't want to release it. And I can't entirely blame them for that decision.
But if they hadn't screwed VC from the very beginning, they would not have even had this problem we see today. It is purely incompetence and money-grubbing on Sega's part that caused the death of one of the greatest series of this generation.

To be fair, it wouldn't have mattered if they had made it a ps3/xbox multiplat. With the garbage they turned the second game into, nobody would have bought that piece of crap.
