It'll be really interesting to see what Sony and Microsoft come up with. If they're serious about launching in 2013, they probably should have something to show in six months at E3. How much more powerful will they be than the current consoles? How much more powerful will they be than WiiU? How much emphasis will they put on things outside of/in addition to "traditional video gaming"? Will either of them risk a $500-600+ launch price?

Microsoft if they're feeling particularly gutsy and confident about their stranglehold on the american market, though unlikely.

All three consoles will likely come in under $399. I would expect both Sony and Microsoft to do a double SKU situation again. Microsoft might make a cheap $299 SKU, Sony might make a premium $499 SKU -- either way, I expect that to stick from this gen. It's tough to say how much more powerful the consoles will be over the WiiU, considering no one knows what' the finalized specs are, but it should be a solid leap over this gen. Also, I expect more emphasis on online distribution. That will be a bigger deal next-gen than it ever was this gen.

Hm. I don't know that I would expect there be a blowout at E3 this year. We might hear about new systems from Sony and Microsoft, but I wouldn't expect any reveals. Nintendo will be going all out since they're launching in November-ish, most likely, but Sony and Microsift have time to wait it out until there's more substance to show. Neither probably want a WiiU kind of reveal to start things off.

ugh Nintendo's online distribution for 3DS

for some reason, with the eShop they just decided to completely ditch the entire concept of "organizing". Instead, every week they display ~20 different/random categories, from "High Speed Racing" to "Multiplayer Games" to "Mario Games". Each category only has a select few titles displayed. There's absolutely no way to browse every available game.

They just put so much effort to make the eShop something cool or interesting, but they just made it completely impractical.

Vita stuff seems so mixed. from what I've read:

-UI is nice
- remote play is cool, need a ps3 though. does it need to be in standby or can you be using it?
- battery life seems better than expected so far - not the biggest praise, but after 3ds it seemed like 2 hours could be what you'd get.
- Uncharted is in 480p, apparently? Wii zone
- firmware prone to crashing - get ready for those ps3-esque updates! at least Japan is beta testing for us.
- trophies are locked to one account, meaning used games can't get them, only new ones. not 100% on this yet.
- it could be the Vita's screencaps are poor quality, but PSP games look kinda bad from what I've seen. sub-PSP, anyway.

anyone curious should listen to the 8-4 play podcast when it gets posted. four hours dedicated to the Vita, yikes. even has a Sony guy on the show.

The trophies thing isn't totally true. That only applies to Vita games that save data on the card, and you can fix it by deleting the save data on the card.

As for Remote Play, I'm not sure. I've never used Remote Play on the PSP, and obviously haven't messed around with Vita yet, but I think it turns on the system, but doesn't actually play the game. Someone else might know, though.

Oh. I wouldn't bet on it. You could watch a movie on another player, but not through the PS3 while you're using Remote Play.

Edit: Here we go -- -- you can't even access the XMB through the PS3 while using Remote Play. You just get a black screen on the TV that says "Remote Play In Use."

that feature seems super silly. you can remote play ps1 games and that's it. maybe ps2 if you have BC or downloaded those games. no ps3 games, assumedly no psn games. just ps1 and maybe some minis. ps1 games have to get on the store so that there's s better solution than this.

can you stream movies? probably not.

Yep. You can watch movies that are downloaded on your PS3 on your Vita. You can stream PS3 games that support Remote Play (Killzone 2 / 3 support it, most Sony games probably will), most of them right now just don't; I'm not sure about PSN games but someone did play PixelJunk Monsters.

I think Remote Play is cool, it just needs more support from developers. The problem with Remote Play, originally, was that the PSP sucked, so no one bothered supporting it when the only device that could use it did a poor job. It's supposedly super smooth through Vita, so we might end up seeing more support in the future. Can't imagine it's something that's hard to make compatible.

In any case, I agree with you that it's not a big feature. I think you could do cool things with it, but as it stands now, it's not 'exciting.' Cool tha it works, but I don't see myself using it much right now. It's nice for Japanese users who wanted to play PS1 games on their Vita, but that's probably not something we'll have to worry about -- because the patch for PS1 support will almost definitely be out before the US launch.

Hey, here's something about MGS3DS that it has up on MGS3 HD: crouch walking and Peace Walker's over-the-shoulder camera. I think these would have been nice additions to include, at least optionally, in the MGS HD Collection that came out. Even having played MGS3 as much as I have -- one of my most played games ever -- I still kept trying to crouch walk the other night! Hard to go back once you've had a taste of it.

"A retail listing from Japan outlines two more camera options. Players can switch to FPS mode and an over the shoulder camera. Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater 3D also lets players walk while crouching, a feature that wasn’t in the original game."

Gamasutra's "Top 5 Overlooked Games of 2011" -- http://www.gamasutra.com/view/news/39191/Gamasutra_Best_Of_2011_Top_5_Overlooked_Games.php

5) Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon: Shadow Wars (3DS)
4) BloodyCheckers (XBLIG)
3) Bejeweled 3 (multi)
2) Monster Tale (DS)
1) Rayman Origins (multi)

"With its budget, and insane amount of content and assets, there's no way it would be anything but a $60 retail title. But that was also the title's undoing. In an era where every 2D game is downloadable, the game couldn't manage to move more than 50,000 units in its first month on the NPD charts. But this gorgeous tribute to 2D games is likely the last we're getting of this level of polish, so is absolutely worth your time."

Good number one pick -- Rayman one of the top games of the year.

Someone over at GAF did a Vita battery test. Guy played UMVC3, flipped over to the OS and browser occasionally, as well as checking trophies, and clocked the battery life at about 4 hours and 30 minutes. Pretty nice considering these settings:

WiFi - On
3G - On
Brightness - Max
Bluetooth - Off
Near Auto-Updating - On
Headphones, Volume 50%

http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=33603177&postcount=3431

Definitely not 1 hour and dead! Someone else apparently did the same test with movie watching and the battery lasted nearly 8 hours.

Nice interview on the PS Blog with Yoshida about Vita.

http://blog.us.playstation.com/2011/12/20/shuhei-yoshida-interview-the-present-and-future-of-ps-vita/

PSB: How far ahead are you looking now and what can we expect from the second and third phases of releases?
SY: Generally we look three years ahead when we work on games. We have a fairly firm plan right up to 2013 but, because PS Vita gives us the opportunity to work on smaller titles like Escape Plan and Sound Shapes, I’m certain we will end up working on more games than we even know about at this moment. On top of the launch line-up, we have already announced LittleBigPlanet, Resistance: Burning Skies, ModNation: Road Trip, and Killzone.

In the past we launched PSP and then shifted our attention to PS3 when that came on the horizon, which we now concede was a mistake. So with PS Vita we are working on this huge range titles and planning ahead for a constant supply of excellent games.

PSB: As someone involved in unearthing new development talent, does it excite you seeing smaller teams coming up with really compelling download and mobile games?
SY: Absolutely – my personal PS Vita game is a totally immersive experience called Sound Shapes (which is especially great when you’re wearing headphones). It’s made by Jonathan Mak who created Everyday Shooter all by himself, designing the graphics and even composing the music. With this new game he has some huge ambitions: he has even hired a couple of people!

I’m a fan of these small developers – The best thing is that they have experience in every part of planning, developing and releasing. It’s not like they have left school and gone to work in a team of 100, only ever working on one particular aspect of their game. They don’t follow the traditional game conventions; some of them are very vocal about trying to break those rules. They are the next generation and they will be changing the landscape of gaming long after I have retired.

PSB: PlayStation 3 has introduced predominantly new IPs from Worldwide Studios, whereas PS Vita has a mix of the new and the familiar. What can we expect to see in the long term?
SY: People like to see their favourite franchises, partly because gaming is about learning a mechanic and developing a skill, and players want to use those skills that they have honed. However, when we introduce new hardware with unique interfaces and network options, it is almost easier to work on something completely new. Take rear touch on PS Vita – we’d rather be thinking about how we can make fresh games using that feature than figuring out ways to add it to something that already exists.

Vita sold 325,000 in two days in Japan, which is reported to be about 65% of the initial shipment. Sold better than the PSP in its opening weekend, and about equal to the 3DS.

http://andriasang.com/comzfw/media_create_vita_sales/

"Vita sold 325,000 units in its first week (covering the 17th and 18th), according to Media Create stats (as reported at IT Media). This is similar to the 321,000 unit figure that Enterbrain reported earlier in the week. Media Create estimates that the system's sell-through rate is 65%. This is based off an estimate of 500,000 units shipped, which matches a figure shared in a column that was posted to Nikkei earlier today (it's possible that the Nikkei column was based off Media Create's shipment estimates)."
