Bought a bunch of stuff over Black Friday weekend.
- 3DS with Mario 3D Land bundle - Fallout: New Vegas - Portal 2 - Dissidia 2 - Assassin's Creed Revelations
Never going to finish all this stuff. In the middle of Zelda right now, and playing some Mario as well. 3D land is actually pretty good! Haven't found the simplicity of the early levels much of a deterrent. Still on the fence about Zelda, but I know everyone else seems to love it. I'm liking the dungeons a lot, but everything else not so much.
Also SKYRIM, but that's on the backburner for now while I try to carve through some of this other stuff.
Nothing fancy news-wise going on, the year is pretty much done. Mario Kart 7 is the only significant release left that I can think of off the top of my head.
Anyone else get anything fun and exciting over the weekend?

I've done 4 Mario worlds so far. Early on it's nice and easy fun, but you start really wishing it'd get a bit more difficult instead of just tossing more cute little tricks your way. The airship bosses being the same is annoying - they dropped the ball big time there. Music is probably the biggest letdown. It's a terrific game for pooping.

you got a 3ds, huh? let me know if it feels worthwhile. not Mario, I mean the whole package. I usually hate the jaded "wait for the redesign" viewpoint but in this case it feels kind of accurate since it could be such a fundamental change.
I bought some indie games on steam this weekend. still on the lookout for a cheap wired 360 controller - I'd prefer that to a dongle + wireless controller situation since the dongle is going to be just as intrusive as the wired controller on my laptop. from there I want to try and get into some gamepad-friendly pc games. the cheapest I've seen is 30 bucks. right now I've got my fight pad and my arcade stick that I can hook up. I also want to try xpadder and see how that all works. master race, here I come

Well, the phat->Lite change was significant if you bought any little cases/peripherals for it, or if you ever got a bonus stylus, etc. Did it necessarily impact you while playing? nah, but it's still a bit of an insult.

I'm pretty happy with it so far. It's got a battey indicator instead of just a light I can't tell the color difference of! Haven't fiddled with the 3D all that much. It looks neat, but I can't imagine I'd really want to play a game like that. Slide pad and button layout all feel pretty good.
I mean, I knew I was going to want one eventually, and the price seemed right considering Mario's never going to price drop, and the system itself probably isn't going to for a while either.

yeah, I'm less worried about the price and more worried about having outdated hardware. the original GBA was dead in the water the second the SP came out. a second analog stick isn't as significant as being able to see the damn thing, but I could see games being kind of unplayable on the old model after a couple years of dual analog if they do indeed go that route.

Oh, don't worry, I pondered for a good while wandering around Best Buy before I decided to pull the trigger!
For the kind of games I'm interested in playing, I don't think not having a second analog stick would be that detrimental, if it happens at all, so that was my rationale.

I finished Portal 2 the other night. The second half of the game is mixed in terms of puzzles, and it goes on for longer than it should, but it's a great game. Major improvement over the original. It's not GOTY or anything, but one of the best this year.
Playing Rayman Origins right now. It reminds me of a bunch of different old school platformers. Amazing art, and really tight and precise controls. It's how NSMB should have controlled.

Not quite as challenging as, say.....Grandmaster Galaxy was, but a lot of these stages still gave me the same feeling I had as a wee lad when I made it to the Star Road in SMW for the first time.

"occasional" haha. I knew they were trying to downplay this but jeeze. I guess it's technically correct 'on the occasion that you play the game for like 60 hours, the performance issues will make the game unplayable'

Uncharted 3 got its aiming patch today too. man, is there any reason to buy huge games in the first couple of weeks anymore? seems like you could wait a month, pay half price and get a better experience. Batman, Skyrim, Battlefield, MW3, Uncharted - all a mess on day 1.
I'd hardly call any of them a mess! Skyrim moreso than the others, as that's just the nature of the game, but even Skyrim's issues are pretty minor for the most part.

Apparently you couldn't remap the button to select objects properly. So for example, if you wanted to remap WASD to ESDF, the game would still require you to press E to pick stuff up, but it would just move you forward because of the remapping.

You don't like the Timeshift Stones in Lanayru? I've seen people call that the best part of the game, dungeons included. I think Skyloft is awesome, Faron is awesome, Lanayru is a pinnacle of game design, and Eldin is very solid. Most people seem to be big fans of what goes down between dungeons, which was not the case for, say, Twilight Princess.

I feel like it's too much. I get fatigued doing all the in between stuff trying to get to the dungeons, when all I really want to do is the real thing. I think the timeshift stones were great in the context of the Mining Facility, the Sandship and the pirate fortress, but elsewhere not so much. I think the Silent Realm is terrible. I think traveling around Skyloft is a pain (and Skyloft in general isn't that great).
All these things just serve as a hurdle leading up to what I really want in a Zelda game which is the dungeons.

I feel like a sign up topic would be a good idea, but first, how many days should we give each person to have to themselves? Also, who plans on starting their lists earlier than the end of the year, since they would have all the stuff they want to play cleared out?

like for me, I'd probably need 4-5 days at least since I am doing 40+ games in mine. People doing a smaller top 10 list with shorter writeups would probably only need one or two days. I guess that would be part of it, everyone who "signs up" would probably need to list how many days they expect to need.
