It starts out amazing but eventually...backtracking and scavenger hunts ahoy. I'm 40 hours in and now I'm beating it just to beat it. That shouldn't have happened. Why was this so critically acclaimed again?

Yeah, the majority of the ending stuff really irritated me. Didn't completely ruin the whole thing, but greatly diminished it, and I don't even mind fetchquests(I actually like WW's fetchquest), but there is so many at the end and they just keep coming and coming.

The third act was kinda tedious, yeah, but not bad. The Eldin stuff was pretty cool and creative. Seeing Faron Woods all flooded was cool too, but swimming around sucks.

They really did f*** up the pacing; it slows down majorly after the 3rd dungeon and after the 6th it just slows to a standstill due to stupid s*** like that tadtone quest. The final ending sequence is very worth it, however.

They take 10-15 for me. I usually fail once or twice before I finally get it. Getting the tears all over again (let alone the first time) is monotonous and ruins the pace. There is literally no point for these things to exist. Especially not four of them. This is not good game design.

Let alone that whole flooded Faron Woods segment. That was worse than all of the silent realms put together.

Throw backtracking on top of that and we've got the weakest Zelda since Phantom Hourglass.

only bad thing about the silent realms was the ridiculous cutscene for guardians awakening that plays every time and is unskippable, little things like that and the slow text and fi's constant meddling...you can see in SS that nintendo regained the creativity that WW and TP lacked but it traded some of the refinement for that, there are parts of SS where you just wonder if anyone on that dev team has any idea what the hell they're doing

Man, I know people feel the need to defend this game and all, but Skyward Sword definitely pales in comparison to stuff like Majoras Mask and Okami. I mean, in the end it's still a decent game but still....

I liked the backtracking aspect. Especially how areas were different every time you explored them (flooded Faron Woods, dark Eldin, etc).

The tadtones part was AWFUL though. So was the escort mission and some of the other nonsense that's just pointless filler like battling the Imprisoned over and over.

The Imprisoned is almost as bad as Phantom Hourglass's stupid temple of the ocean king. Imagine if you had to fight the Imprisoned between every dungeon... oh my god.

backtracking is good when done well(metroid prime, super metroid for instance). some of the backtracking in SS is just terrible, especially when they make you go back in skyview and the door is relocked, wtf is that? it'd be one thing if they let you progress quickly to the back of the dungeon again and then there was an additional few rooms you couldn't reach before because you didn't have the right item, but that was just idiotic.

Before the 4th dungeon you have to go back into the first temple and one of the doors is relocked. That backtracking was a little tedious too but not horrible. At least, aside from the trials, they switch it up.

They can't win though. People complained there wasn't enough between the dungeons of TP (the later ones at least). If anything this game is more like MM where the dungeons are shorter and spaced out and there's more to do outside.

MM did this a billion times better though. That's the problem. Also, I'm just not a fan of skyloft, I'd rather run around, than fly around. At least make warp points.

If it had that and the town followed a schedule it probably would have surpassed MM as my favorite in the series

this game should never be compared to a masterpiece like MM.

that being said backtracking can work, it just needs to be streamlined. having to reopen doors and sitting through unskippable cinematics and fi hand holding are no nos, bad game design. revisiting areas can be a good thing but those areas can't be a hinderance, SM and MP do this right because you're constantly becoming more powerful and more mobile, you can usually zip through areas you've been through before to get to the new area

I don't understand why you can't warp between bird statues. You can do it from the sky. Why do you have to go to the sky, drop back down, and pick a different bird statue?
