K, I understand girls. If you don't suck, it's generally not an issue. The problem is, you suck. I mean, this is typical. I would say 90% of gamers suck at it. The bigger problem is, like around 75% of other people playing, you're worse than me. And I'm already bad. This means yes, you are going to get trash talked. Suck it up.

From: NeoElfboy | #022 The intent is definitely fine and deserved, but what is actually said, the way it's delivered, it just fails really hard. Most gamer girls realize that if they just don't give a ****, no one will make a big deal about it either, which is how 99% of the internet works. But in the same way, if you highlight your femaleness at all, you can get mounds of attention, and some girls just can't resist (this video's author included). I mean sure you might say that the problem is that girls attract attention by default, but that comes from the fact that like 5-10% of online gamers are female at most, that makes them sort of celebrities. Couple this with the fact that online gamers are awkward as **** when it comes to celebrities, and that's what you get. Couple this with the fact that online gamers are awkward as **** when it comes to celebrities, and that's what you get. The perception of them attracting attention by default is largely because of the overwhelming tendency among the people known to be female to whore out their gender for attention. While you will attract some unwanted attention inevitably by being a female if people know, it's all about the manner with which girls address it. The problem is that it seems like girls always get these disproportionate amounts of attention thanks to these select few, while there are plenty more "gamer girls" out there who just don't feel the need to make sure everyone knows they're female for the sake of attention and thusly don't really get seen. Which, isn't a problem in one way-there's no need to label gamers by gender like that, though unfortunately due to all the societal assumptions that "oh everyone's a guy and MMO players just pretend to be girls," the "gamer females" end up represented by a incredibly small but vocal and obnoxious section of their people, some of which apparently decided that they wanted to get more attention by complaining that after whoring out the fact that they're female for attention that they got attention. -- http://www.nbc.com/parks-and-recreation/exclusives/ron-dancing-animated.gif ... I don't think females are ever going to be fully accepted in an online gaming environment, mostly because we kind of shut ourselves out of it culturally. A substantial amount of male online gamers either go in to full ape mode around a female, and his only interest becomes obtaining nudes ASAP, or the last few hold outs of the boy's club mentality, where they believe that women just shouldn't be playing video games. While I don't think the video is necessarily wrong in the message it's trying to send out, it's definitely detrimental to the cause when your gender is your online gaming identity. If the comments are any indication (I know, lol youtube comments) fewer people care about gender than we think. Frankly, if they feel that they're not welcome in online environments because of beta males and misogynists, I have to wonder how they got through high school.
And this is pretty much my favorite video of all time. Not for the troll, but for the exposure of a legion of white knights that will jump at the chance to have an in with a girl they'll never meet. Oh please. I've had people whom I didn't tell my gender, guess based on my avatar, and then proceed to send me messages like "I have a fat cock for u". These are people to whom I had no intention of divulging any information about my real life. Hell, look at board 8. I refused to tell people on GameFAQs my gender for a long time (because one of my friends who had done so ended up with like...four different GameFAQs stalkers). But hey: I've been a game developer for years, told B8 about experiences at GDC and E3. You'd think would be a bigger deal than gender. And yet, a couple years ago my gender leaked on B8, and these days it seems like if you ask the average B8er what they know about me, the only thing they know is my gender. So...all the people saying that male gamers don't even care anymore...BS. Board 8 is a living demonstration that gamers care more about gender than they do about being a game developer. __Smurf__ posted... What you're describing is basically the FPS online community and nowhere else. I've literally been harassed and asked for sex while playing online puzzle games. Admittedly there isn't a boy's club around puzzle games, but there are other boy's clubs out there. Magic the Gathering jumps to mind. Hell, there was an article about the boy's club mentality on SSG recently: http://www.starcitygames.com/magic/misc/22786_To_My_Someday_Daughter.html (Athough whether the magic scene is worse than the FPS scene is open for debate; I participated in a grand prix a year ago, and didn't feel harassed, so...dunno). I can't really comment on fighting games having never played one online, but I imagine they're not much better than FPSs (certainly they seem to have a worse gender ratio at tournaments when I've watched streams). And id like to hear your response to the 2nd part of my statement instead of being one of those "pick and choose" posters. Are you asking for my personal response? (Hint: I'm not heterosexual, and generally wear makeup only if I have an interview or are going to a gay bar. Take a guess). If you're asking for a generalized response...I can certainly think of heterosexual girls who sought out gaming websites where they would not be harassed or given special attention for their gender...and then five years later ended up dating someone from that website. And I suppose you're arguing that this is hypocritical, but I'm not sure it is. The point is, girls generally don't come to gaming websites looking for love; girls come to gaming websites looking to do gaming stuff. And sure: if you spend a lot of time hanging around with people of the appropriate gender, sometimes romance will happen. This is how office romances get started, even though most people recognize that it's a bad idea to hook up with your coworkers. I certainly wouldn't automatically point a finger at the woman and say "aha, you were just seeking attention all this time!" Frankly, if you're female on a gaming message board, and want to hook up with a male from the board, and it takes you FIVE years to find a willing male? You're doing something wrong. I suspect most hetersexual gamer girls would rather something like: not receive inappropriate attention on gaming message boards/voice chats...but do receive that kind of attention on dating websites. It's a compartmentalization thing. When you just want to screw around with a game, and are possibly already dating someone anyway, you're generally not interested in sexual advances. -- Cats land on their feet.
