Anyone else read these? What do you guys think? As far as I can tell very few people are actually satisfied with the majority of gaming sites, so I'd imagine that there plenty of opinions out there.

I'd like game review sites more if all the big, AAA releases weren't like guaranteed 9.5s/10s from most of them, or at least that's how it seems. It's getting annoyingly predictable. Get harsher, get better, raise your standards.

I don't mind big name games getting high scores as much because big name games are usually actually good. The chances of a high-release game being good are a lot better than the chances of a high-budget movie being good, I think.

Of course, anything that isn't a high-budget hyped release is basically guaranteed lesser scores, which is I think a bigger issue.

Unless I'm seeking out the opinions of a specific author, I'm not interested in reading a dozen glowing reviews of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. I want to read the review from the one guy that ****ing hated it, the guy who wants to make the argument about why it's actually terrible. Maybe I don't end up agreeing with this hypothetical guy, but I don't need my opinions validated, I need my opinions challenged.

This.

High profile big budget games getting great reviews zzzzzzzzzzzz. I'm more interested in dissenting views on the blockbuster games and more opinions on smaller profile games.

Three biggest problems I have with "professional" game reviews:

- Terrible writing/argument standard. Doesn't apply to every "professional" reviewer, of course, but some of the reviews I've seen on big gaming websites are laughably badly written. You could find better reviewers by just grabbing some prolific writers from GameFAQs.
- Hugely hyped game receives fairly positive review with one or two minor negatives. Gets 9.5/10. Lesser hyped game receives glowing review with one or two minor negatives. Gets 8.5/10.
- Games reviewed by someone who is terrible at that type of game. You don't understand how to play Fire Emblem? Fine. Don't review the latest Fire Emblem.

But what if a reviewer legitimately loved Skyrim and gives it 10/10? Do you want him to lie and make up problems (or overblow tiny problems, same difference) so that the review is more "interesting"? Because it does seem like some reviewers do this, and to me at least, I find it really annoying.

If you go to sites like IGN and Gamespot, you will be disappointed in reviewer quality. Other sites produce better reviews. Eurogamer and gamrReview are my personal favorites.

Good for that reviewer. I'm just not going to read his review. I don't care about why the game is great. If I want to know that I can go to the developer's or the publisher's site. They'll probably have no shortage of praise for it. I want to why the game sucks. Even if it's just some petty little detail, maybe it's a petty little detail that would make or break the game for me. Or maybe it's not a big deal for me and I can dismiss it as such. Whether the reviewer has an honest beef or is grasping for maor hitz doesn't matter.

The same applies to any sort of review, really. When I'm looking at Amazon reviews for whatever sort of product I go straight to the 1 and 2 star reviews because I want to know what went wrong. I don't need hundreds of thousand word essays telling me that it works exactly as advertised.

Yeah, negative reviews are the best for determining if a product is worth it or not. I usually read the 1 and 2 star reviews on amazon before buying stuff and I read the negative reviews on Gamefaqs before buying games if I'm unsure if I should get it or not. Then I can determine if the negative stuff is something that will bother me or if I can handle it and buy it anyway.

Everything they're talking about, I've already figured out and believed for a while now. Scores mean nothing, they are promotional tools. It's been like that ever since movie ratings come out.

But I don't think it's bad, because the way most game review sites work is that they type a whole bunch of text that explains what the game does and what it doesn't, and then they attach some arbitrary score at the end. If you just ignore the score, you have this great description of the game from which to make a decision. Of course, some places *cough*gamespot*cough* suck at doing these objective descriptions, but other places are great at it.

If I'm reading a review of Dynasty Warriors 7, all I need to read is "it's better than DW5". I don't care if DW5 is a 5/10 and DW7 is a 6/10.

Talking about Amazon, they do it really well. They highlight the most popular high rating and the most popular low rating for each product, which usually provides 2 good reviews on either side so you can make your own decision.

I don't see how negative reviews are more valid than positive reviews. Negativity is not an immediate sign of honesty.

But this is B8, so erring towards negativity shouldn't come as a big surprise.

It's not, but the point is that if you can see negative criticism about a game and validly disagree with it, then you know the game is good.

If you agree with positive reviews, you don't necessarily know if the game is good.

How can I argue against the criticisms of a game I have never played?

Unless you read reviews in your spare time, in which case, I might want to recommend more productive hobbies.

Well yeah in that part of the letter he was talking about how most of the time, reviews are read by people who have already made a decision to buy or not buy the game. A good review for those people should challenge their already-established opinions to make sure they really believe what they think they believe.
