The thing I want to know is if I should use the leveling thing to actually level my characters outside of battle now, or should I save up for, uh... something?

Well you could use it and most of the time you should. I think you might want to keep it there for a couple of chapters though for now.

It's also easy to abuse. Save, level someone up, reload if you don't like the level up. I am ashamed to admit I did that the first time I played through the game. It was also my first FE ever, and I found it to be really tough.

It also scales with EXP IIRC. Meaning lower level characters get more out of it. Mist is normally the most common target of it I think.

Oh, that's something everyone's done from time to time, I think. It's hard to swallow no stat increase level-ups.

Chapter 8: Despair and Hope (Part 2)

So, uh... I leveled up Mia in the base by one level. And they raised her Magic by 1. And that's it. I'm pretty sure that's completely worthless for her too. Ugggggh.

We're about to do stuff like talk to the Daelia Gallieo whatever people, but then we get surrounded by Daelin. Oh no! And this fight looks brutal from the get go. I put Boyd in the east part because there were a bunch of lance enemies. Then I put Oscar in the south because he's a tank. And then Ike and Mia round out the west portion. Oscar got pretty hurt, so I switched him out with Titania who god stomped over them. And... Titania eventually gets her first level up! It was a pretty good one too. I also get a good upgrade with Soren finally.

I'm doing alright until the last turn in which everyone is getting their asses kicked and almost dying. And then f***ing Oscar dies by the very last enemy in that turn after tanking everybody in that last turn.

Freaking livid. I'm trying again tomorrow. (Btw, Boyd had three levels from that.)

I usually have Titania handle the east (annoying armor knights and mages), mostly Ike and another one eventually south and Boyd/Oscar/Soren/Mia (depends on who I'm using) on the west end, with Rhys in the center. It's basically the only chapter where I let Titania take exp. because it can be annoying as hell otherwise.

Yeah, I had Titania doing a ton whenever Oscar was hurt. Boyd literally never needed to be healed a single time while he was in the east because he's so godlike.

Ike and Mia needed the most healing because it was difficult for them to deal with the lance enemies in the west. Especially since Mia kind of sucks currently. I might have Titania taking a more active role though, because it got very difficult for Oscar.

But no, I mean I restarted if I didn't get a level up in the base according to my liking. like, if Boyd didn't get hp, str, def, and at least one other, I restarted. Stuff like that. <_<

You don't really need Titania to take a more active role, you literally just put her to block the east path and have her scream "COME AT ME BRO!" for the whole chapter.

Sounds like your Ike isn't really leveled as of now though, my Ike is usually around level 15 or so by this chapter and I have him slay the horses on the south with the Regal Sword or whatever its english name is. Then I have him talk to Ilyana and then I try to kill the boss to get its band (or a stat boosting item, I don't remember which one he has now).

The west is cake and Boyd/Oscar alone with the occasional Soren kill should be able to handle it perfectly. But since you're also using Mia (which I usually don't), Oscar could be much more helpful on the southern end, he has an easy time going back to Rhys for healing anyway.

Is it just me or is Oscar way better in 9 than in 10?

Paladins in general are better in 9. Oscar is easily outclassed by Titania in 10 though.

I usually don't do no-restart playthroughs until I beat the game once! Usually because I like to experience each character and such. And it's harder to do that when they're dead.

Oscar is great in both games simply because he has the Earth support. I brought him to the final levels in both games just because of that.

Depends on the chapter, IMO.

FE10 has a fantastic one (The one in Part 2.) But there are some other ones I'm not a fan of. Like most other objectives, really.

So hey, this went a lot smoother! I had Titania focus on the south after Oscar took a whooping, I had Boyd keep tanking the east, and then I had the rest of the team whoop everyone on the west. I also got a chick called Ilyana to join me who is friends with the merchants apparently! Yay for friendship! She seems like another mage... but it seems like kind of a waste to have both her and Soren? Is there a purpose in two of them? I got a few items too: Longbow and a Red Gem!

However, Ike realizes there's too many of them and that we all must retreat to inside the castle! Ike's like, having a breakdown or something too. Mist comes by and then Ike proclaims he won't let her die. Oh, cliche scenes. Then a bunch of tiger people come to save our asses again. These tiger people seem pretty OP, tbqh.

One guy is named Mordecai, which-- hey! Mordecai is one of my nicknames by the school I student taught at. Because apparently I sound like Mordecai from Regular Show. Biz Fact.

There's also a catgirl person or something called Lethe. I don't have a story about that name. And omgggggg, I hate this chick. "Racism racism racism." I'm so over racism crap in my games. And then Soren comes to f*** with the catgirl and give them more reason to be awful. Uggggggh. Soren keeps f***ing with them even after Mordecai hits Ike when he tries to protect Soren. Anyway, everyone forgives each other (except for Soren who is an ass) and the catpeople decide to escort us to the castle.

Oh yeah, and why the hell were these animal people made into slaves when they can decimate entire armies with no problem? JUST FIGHT BACK IDIOTS.

Anyway, I'm going to continue!

Boo yah Boyd.

You ask why have both Soren and Ilyana? It basically comes down to preference. Why have Erk and Canas together? Maybe you like having more than one mage, since they can attack at both 1 and 2 squares away. If your Soren growths are sucking really hard, maybe you want to try Ilyana. Soren is a wind-based mage, Ilyana is a thunder-based mage. Wind does less damage but has a higher accuracy, thunder has lower accuracy, higher damage, and higher crit chance.

I usually did what you did (give one tome of each) just because there are situations where one might be more desirable than the others. (The specific weaknesses of some enemy types was brought up before.) Granted, you could generally just take a look at the map before the chapter starts and equip based on that, but I felt it was simpler to just keep all 3 types on hand. Your call though.

...I thought they only are weighed down by whatever they have equipped at the moment. Not the sum total of everything on hand. If that were the case my team would be at negative attack speed pretty much all the time, because I constantly have them stacked with weapons whenever possible. >_>

But yeah, like I said, it's mostly your preference. You don't seem to like Soren's character, so maybe you'll like Ilyana's cliched hungry stuff that got old for me fast.

There are a fair amount of higher-level magic tomes at the end of the game, so it's generally a decent idea to focus on one for a certain character so you can use those tomes, in my experience.

I like defense chapters, but I don't like FE9 Chapter 8. It's just Ch5 again with a worse party.

I'd pick something to focus on, yeah. Since the three anima schools all have their own weapon rank, spreading out your usage means you wind up getting nowhere in any of them. Feel free to swap around when you see enemies with a type weakness, of course.

And that's the way it is. Characters lose as many speed points as the weight points of the equipped weapon that exceed the character's strength.

If not screwed by the RNG, I always found Soren to be better than Ilyana. Ilyana is not bad by any means, but she tends to have unreliable speed and much lower magic to the point that Soren with wind tomes deals more damage. Also, while both are good skills, Adept >> Shade. If I'm using a second mage it's usually Tormod (needs lots of bexp but worth it) or Calill.

Until his stats start rolling, I'd suggest sticking with wind magic since Soren has pitiful strength and gets weighted down by anything until promotion. After promotion, when his speed gets higher, it doesn't really make much difference even with Elfire/Elthunder.

Also chapter 5 is painfully easy and 8 isn't.

though in my case, chapter 5 was one I had to retry... a few times
(that was my wake-up call)

Chapter 9: Gallia

So the chapter title is now the only reason I'm finally getting the name of this place right. So Soren gives me the current stats for our army. (I'm going to post them for just this once. Tell me if it's anything you guys would be interested in seeing again.)

Then I get to manage everything. I proceed to level up Ilyana once to bring her to level 7. She actually gets GOOD level ups! Ike and Soren have a pretty worthless conversation. Ike and Mist have an even more worthless conversation. Oscar is a chipper dude who is friendly with Ike. Ike wants him to train with him. Cool. Mia has a fun little conversation with Ike in which she doesn't know what to say. SEXUAL TENSION? Eh, I dunno. Mordecai has a decent conversation with Ike too about learning the language. Aaaaand that's it. Time to start the fight!

Titania and Ike talk about being in Gallia before and Mordecai asks Ike if the crew needs to rest, but then Lethe goes LOL RACISM again. But then they smell soldiers coming by! Mordecai says he'll fight with us and the merchants take care of the children. But then I guess the kids come by to help out so now they're on our team. Mist can use a heal staff (lol if they think I'd use her over Rhys) and Rolf can use a bow (lol if they think I'd use him over Shi- f***). Why are we letting this small child use a bow? The best part about this is that Boyd keeps telling off Rolf for lying and calling him names. lol

Anyway, I send Ike, Soren, Mia, and Rhys to the north to deal with all of the axe enemies on the beach, while everyone goes to the south. I force the yellow units to halt since they'll just rob my XP! It goes alright until... Marcia! WHAT UP BABE? Soren levels up and gains ONE SKILL POINT. The f*** game?

"I'm here to join you Ike!"
"What? But I thought you were a part of the holy Pegasus crew."
"Nah, I resigned."

I like Marcia a lot.

Also, the barbarian torched both of the buildings, and I'm not happy about that! I hope I didn't miss anything good! I managed to take all of the pirate dudes out pretty handily with a triple team from Ike, Mia, and Soren. The hard part came with the boss. I had Boyd bait him into using Javelin by using Hand Axe. But that was a bad idea because I realized that he could counter attack everyone at that point. So I made him use Knight Killer and then walloped on him with my ranged people! And in the end, Ilyana dealt the final blow. And hey! Everyone leveled up in this battle! Except for Titania who I didn't use! Whoo.

So there's a discussion on which side to take between Daein and Gallia. OF COURSE SOREN WANTS TO GO WITH DAEIN BECAUSE WE CAN'T POSSIBLY TEAM WITH SUBHUMAN SCUM! So we go to the castle and we see... Caineghis. What a goofy f***ing name. And Caineghis basically tells Ike that he was born in Gallia and his daddy was a merc there. Apparently we're going to have to take the princess elsewhere because RACISM, of course. And that's basically it. Whew.

But seriously, I'm getting another archer soon, right?

Well of those...A lot of people will say Mist but I'm kinda indifferent to that. Marcia's a good choice. As for Rolf...most of my playthroughs consist of not using Bows until some people promote or I just use the bow knight, cause like I said, Paladins just kick ass in FE9.

I think the Laguz just aren't worth the time. Spend half the time being useless when you can have someone who's not useless half the time in that slot instead. But they are really powerful when transformed so you're choice really.

Okay, so our chapter begins with Ranulf talking to Ike. Apparently "human" is a racist term in this game. Big lol to you game. The king gives us a s*** ton of gold though! Yay! And now Mordecai and Lethe join us! ...Yay...? And we get our report, so let me know if you really want to hear it still:

Now I'm going to go watch the WWE PPV, so I'll let all of this sit and wait for any advice you guys have before picking this back up (hopefully) later tonight.
