yeah but there are some base level things that determine attractiveness.

like I prefer red heads over blondes, that is an opinion.

But I will prefer a red head with a 0.7 hip to waist ratio versus a red head with a worse hip to waist ratio, and other such objective beauty merits.

I'm saying preferring red heads over blondes doesn't have anything to do with beauty, at least not nearly as much as hip to waist ratio, BMI, facial symmetry, complexion, etc.

There is objectivity only because most normal human brains find those things attractive, therefore if your brain was not wired the same way, it would be possible to find completely different things attractive.

And then there's conditioning, which is based on your environment and experiences affecting you rather than your genetics; this too can change what you find attractive.

But not nearly as much as the other things I listed. I'm not going to find an overweight red head more beautiful than a perfectly proportioned blonde, for instance. Because that stuff is objective.

I think people here are confusing 'objective' with 'socially accepted'

Just because in general people like guys/girls with a certain type of length, weight, ... more than others does not mean it is objectively better.

That's like saying french toast is objectively worse than waffles just because the latter is more popular.

IT'S WRONG

this is not objectivity, btw. it's an epistemological subjective truth. you may be using objective measures to determine that subjective truth, but you should not confuse the two

They're usually social constructionists who think that society plays a role in determining sexual preferences.

To support their opinions, they would likely point to Greek pederasty/Turkish dancing boys and argue that such homoeroticism is now taboo in modern Western society.

There's also the classic "fat girls were preferred in the past" argument, but I think that's been debunked.

Sure, there are some standards for each culture for ratios and such, and it varies from group to group, but that's not really all there is to beauty. Red hair vs blonde is absolutely part of it.

Lets put it this way, there are dude who like flat chested women who are thin as a rail.

But there are other people who like curves, and other people who like big bottoms and dont really care about breasts. Some people cant find themselves attracted to asian women while others find them fantastic.

Then you have like fetishes and such that disgust some people, and give people like Mac Arrowny their jollies.

To put it another way, if perfectly proportioned blondes were the be all end all of attractiveness, wouldnt the majority of women by this point be evolutionarily skewed towards perfectly proportioned blondes?

But you know what pisses me off? When people try to make everything objective just so they can say that they're right. And not just in this this goes for everything, and is found pretty much all over the internet. GameFAQs in particular seems especially bad.

I'm not really concerned with being right, so much as annoyed with this mentality that the media (and men) are evil and wrong for liking a certain body type for women.
