I was just looking at the winners of the award over the past few decades and I can't say that many of my top movies have ever won it. I mean a ton have been nominated, but most of the winners were just movies I mildly enjoyed rather than really loved.

I'd have to say my favourite of all-time is American Beauty.

Watch on the Rhine's Paul Lukas beating out Humphrey Bogart for Best Actor was the big controversy.

Casablanca winning Best Picture was actually a noticeable upset at the time. It was actually only the third pick behind The Song of Bernadette and Watch on the Rhine which were the major prestige pictures that year.
