To be fair I don't know much about [KOFXIII] yet, but... what makes this game special, really? It just feels like yet another minor re-arrangement of all of the same crap we've been doing since like the mid-90s. There's just SO MUCH inherent complexity, SO MUCH arbitrary information you just have to learn if you want to play well. Memorizing a bunch of combos, moves, exceptions about "when what has priority over what"... to me these kinds of flat "fact-memorizations" should not be what a game should be about. For this reason, Smash Brothers is my favorite fighter ever created (and Yomi is probably 2nd).

Accessibility comes from watering down the genre. To keep running with the RPG example, the whole reason the Wasteland 2 Kickstarter did so well is because it's promising to deliver an RPG with the depth and complexity that hardcore RPG fans have wanted for a decade instead of these modern day RPGs that eschew all the complexities in favor of being accessible. There's room for these casual-friendly renditions of a genre because there are people out there who like the basic ideas of a genre but don't want to deal with the complexities of it, but to claim that the complexities are "arbitrary," and that any game that sticks by them is just a "minor re-arrangement of all of the same crap" is laughable.

RL5, there's no comparison to the amount of on-the-fly adaption needed in smash compared to any other fighting game, simply because of how the combo system works. The existence of DI (Direction Influence) when you're hit adds a huge layer of depth that other fighting games just can't match, with the only difference in traditional fighting games in how your combo works has to do with where on your opponents body you land your initial hit (hitting their head with a j.HP means different things than hitting their feet for example).

I'm not saying there's anything wrong with it (obviously, since I <3 Marvel, SGs, and 3s), but it's definitely not more complex (strictly referring to combo system, again). Now, the complexity is certainly there in other areas...you'd have to be a complete idiot to say that everything is less complex XD thats obviously not true. Most of the complexity in modern fighters is found in the moves themselves (it's certainly harder to do a DP than any special move in smash), the footsies spacings, which are much stricter than Smash footsies (which, due to the increased standardized movement options, tend to exist in a much lesser capacity or in different forms), or in blocking (crossups and hi/lows). In every other regard, the two are comparable. It simply comes down to preference.
