Much of this country fell into a mindset that you have to work a standard 40 hour a week job and are somehow entitled to something for doing it, while at the same time biting the heads off of people who either said or did other wise, that's why a good portion of it is falling apart. If you want to work like that good for you, but don't attack entrepreneurs and other various people who don't follow suit.

Entrepreneurs typically become entrepreneurs by working 100+ hour weeks

Nah, people who are saying a 40 hour work week is unreasonable are lazy. And that's all there is to it.

Are you seriously trying to argue that a 40 hour work week is a luxury, not the norm... And then naming jobs like construction and DOOR TO DOOR SALESMAN to prove your point?

Really?

I'm not even going to take a stance on the topic. I just had to point out how terrible your logic is and how much of a douche you're being for telling people they can't want to work less or else they're lazy.

Guy literally asks for examples of jobs where people work 60+ hours a week and I give them.

And I'm a douche or something.

Because your entire argument is

"LOL YOU'RE LAZY BECAUSE 60 AND 80 HOURS ARE THE NORM AND WANTING LESS IS LOLOL"

And you name DOOR TO DOOR F***ING SALESMAN.

That's not even a job you choose.

That's a job you accept because you screwed up somewhere.

That's a job littering craigslist because nobody else will do it.

That's not a job you use as an example to call somebody lazy for wanting less than a 40 hour week.

I never said 60 and 80 hours are the norm.

I said 40 hours are the norm and it is a luxury, because there ARE many people that work a lot more than that.

Honestly, this board is immature about a lot of things but the idea that 40 hours a week is an outrageous expectation from society is one of the worst I've seen, and I will say so.

There's nothing wrong with door to door salesman btw, there were TONS of people doing it where I worked, it paid very well and I personally did it because it was a great opportunity for me to improve my skills establishing a connection with someone I just met. What better way to practice talking to new people than to throw yourself at dozens of new people every day that don't want to talk to you? The hours I worked weren't even a big deal, I even spent most of my free time working on my pitch and technique.

And, for the record, I didn't call you a douche because you named some jobs.

Even if you did name door to door salesman and expect to have a point.

I called you a douche because you're taking the stance that anybody who wants less than a 40 hour week is lazy, automatically. And you've been elitist as f*** about it with your "lol 40 is a luxury compared to more." Well, no s***, Sherlock. But that doesn't even account for simple stuff like... Some people work harder in a 40 hour week than a 60 one.

I have a 60 hour work week and I spend a lot of it sitting on the computer. My friend works 40 hour weeks in retail and she busts her ass. I wouldn't call her lazy if she wanted less because her week left her not having as much of a social life as she'd like.

I don't for one second buy that anybody CHOOSES to be a door to door salesman if they have better alternatives.

Unless they work in a rich area where they're certain to make a lot of money.

It's okay, though, Cly. The douche comment was a little harsh, so I apologize.

And Mozzezz is being much worse than you.

No, I've specifically stated there can be reasons for not wanting to work 40 hours that are perfectly acceptable and valid.

But the idea that 40 is unreasonable and unmanageable? That just screams immaturity and the inability to manage your own life, and is, yes, lazy.

It is certainly possible for a person that works 30 some hours a week to be more stressed out than 40 hours, I would say the fast food jobs I worked and probably only did 30 hours a week were more stressful than the office job I had at a military base where I worked 40 hours, but both were less stressful than when I worked 44 hours a week at a quick oil change shop.

That's just the difference between jobs though, not a statement about number of hours.

I said this before and I'll say it again. The premise of this topic is that 40 hours a week is too much and is completely unreasonable for an normal person to work, because you don't have enough time for other things. Many people in this topic agree with it.

It's not true.

You do when you can make 30-40k in just the four summer months =O

For me it was just a learning experience though. I sucked at it and certainly didn't make 30k.

I think you're being overly anal about what the topic actually means verbatim, Cly

Of course 40 hours is "reasonable." I just agreed with the topic based on the idea that 40 hours is undesirable, that's all. Of course someone can do it but should they want to if they have the choice? For someone who developed all these social skills working as a door to door salesman I'd say your ability to read into subtext is a bit lacking.

Well, yeah. You're right there. You CAN make a lot of money.

It's just that only like, 5% of them do.

The company I worked for sold alarm systems. 25 of us went out, 7 went home because they couldn't cut it.

I'd say at least 14 made 20k, top 10 made over 30k, the top 4 probably made 50k+. Anybody that made 50 sales in 4 months made over 25k, if you made over 100 you were easily in 50k range.

I didn't make it to 50 though >_>

Also, though I'm sure some do, 100+ hours a week being the norm is an exaggeration even for people running their own business. From what I know it's usually 70-80.

I plan to be a professor/researcher one day and I know that in those jobs the actual work time is significantly more than 40 hours per week.

If you want to be paid a decent wage and live comfortably, 40 hr/wk is fine and I don't see how that's too much at all.

Well I'm personally not too surprised that someone whose claim to fame is parting a large body of water isn't big on bathing.

lol

Forgot to address this, Mozzezz is a joke name, and I'm an atheist also. I was more along the lines of agnostic (but not exactly) before but proved logically that that's wrong (before both of those beliefs when I was younger I believed there was a god but you didn't have to go to church). Don't feel like going into that explanation or the explanation behind the name.

edit*= and I do enjoy my showers, I usually just space them out along with taking longer ones for relaxation.

Big D

I'm struggling to find 30 hours of work a week. I mean I have all this free time and I'm broke and bored. I honestly wouldn't mind working 40-60 hours of work a week. I'm also single so that probably affects my viewpoint as well, but I got student loans/credit cards/bills to pay for.

Oh I forgot to address this, though mostly run by the Communist party, from what I understand, China is mostly Socialist. So Socialism hasn't failed, though like I said earlier, the system we have isn't bad, and I wouldn't quickly trade it for Socialism.
