One of my friends thinks it's annoying, but I don't really see the problem. The dude made the movies possible. Giving him a short cameo rather than having a random extra doesn't hurt anything.
He says it breaks the fourth wall. He was also bothered by other little things in Marvel movies like the purple pants thing in Hulk and the comment about yellow spandex in X-men.
I love it. He created all these characters and its great that he is getting to be a part of these movies in a way that doesn't detract from them at all and just serves as an inside joke. If you didn't know who he was you wouldn't even notice.
does your friend realize breaking the fourth wall is not an inherently bad thing

He doesn't understand what the 4th wall is then. Cause having someone from behind the scenes as an extra isn't breaking it. It's a subtle nod towards it but its not like he is in the movie as Stan Lee, he is just some random individual in the Marvel world. Heck, in Iron Man he was Hugh Hefner!
The costume comments are hilarious because they reference the source material and how it relates to the world of the marvel movies.

He thinks it is. I dunno, I thought it was hilarious that Tony thought he was Hugh Heffner. Maybe if they had actually gotten Hugh Heffner to be in Iron Man for 5 seconds it would have pleased him *shrug*
you don't need to explicitly address the audience in order to break the fourth wall. a cameo from the most prominent co-creator of Marvel books in every Marvel movie indirectly engages the audience.

I kinda like it but at the same time in Avengers I didn't think it fit. I felt like that movie had more to do with modern Marvel and not as much with Silver Age Smilin' Stan. But if not him, who would be better? Bendis? Quesada? Whedon? Not really feeling any of that, and I doubt I'd have even recognized any of them. So I guess you might as well put Stan in there. Or no one, that's fine too.

Stan has a contract saying they have to give him a cameo in any film featuring a character he was involved in creating. I assume at least one of the Avengers is his.

Stan Lee didn't create all those characters singlehanded; Jack Kirby (especially) and Steve Ditko contributed a lot as well. Doesn't mean Lee isn't an important person in Marvel's history, though.
From: PrivateBiscuit1 | #036 So long as it isn't dumb stuff like that mini-speech in Spider-Man 3. That was horrible.
OK yeah THIS actively detracted from the movie.
Every other time I've enjoyed looking out for his cameo. Or being surprised by it, like I was with The Avengers.
