Whoo, first topic is at 500! If you'd like to catch up with the previous topic before it purges, you can go here:

http://www.gamefaqs.com/boards/8-gamefaqs-contests/62633812

Once it purges, simply replace the "game" in gamefaqs.com with a word that describes a person who simply reads topics without posting in them (like many of you reading this topic right now!), and you can find it that way, too.

To reiterate from the first topic:

The one basic ground rule you can expect for all writeups is EXPECT SPOILERS. All of the writeups will contain them. I will not mark for spoilers during character or game writeups, so this is your warning up front. I will mark spoilers for the moments list since even stating what the moment is could spoil people, so I will make sure to be careful in that regard.

Also, I will make no attempt to pretend to be objective in any of these writeups (In fact, this is the only time I will use this word in this entire topic!). All of my writeups are shamelessly biased without apology. I will attempt to do at least one writeup per day, alternating between characters, games, and moments, but I can't make any promises.

And, as always, debate, discussion, disagreement, deductions, and all those other D words are, of course, encouraged! Whoo, this should be fun!

Marth was my main, but recently I have adopted Sheik as my new fave.

Funny thing, my friend and rival used to be a Sheik player, and I was shocked to learn he switched to Marth around the same time I did.

And I reckon the MGS series is good for those "good guys lose" moments. MGS3 with the torture scene and then the Sorrow river part. MGS4 with the microwave walk just to name a couple.

Bonus Question: What is your favorite “The good guys lose” moment in a game?

*Spoilers for Radiant Historia*

At the beginning of Radiant Historia where Stocke and company are forced to fight Palomeides and his subordinates get killed before the battle officially starts and you do less than five damage to him. Then you attempt to run away, get cornered, and then jump off the bridge in a desperate attempt to escape. Palomeides is impressed yet confused by what Stocke does but believes that he is either dead or almost dead. The Executioner is one of my favorite villains in this game so far but I've just started playing it yesterday and I've already unlocked multiple of the bad ends but none of them were as memorable as the time you are practically dead before using the power of the White Chronicle.

38. Sonic the Hedgehog (Sonic the Hedgehog)
Quote: “What you see is what you get! Just a guy who loves adventure. I’m Sonic the Hedgehog!”
external image

He’s the fastest thing alive! He’s way past cool! He’s up, over, and gone! He’s Sonic the Hedgehog! Man, I miss those cartoons, even the silly one that ended every episode with “Sonic Sez,” and yes, it was spelled just like that. Some people might say “That’s NO good,” but those were good times. They really ought to bring back Jaleel White and make him Sonic’s official VA. Dancing with the Stars proved the guy is still alive, after all!

Anyway, I’ve always thought Sonic was cool. His character design is great, particularly the fact that he’s cobalt blue, such an awesome color. I like his carefree attitude and his love for adventure. Yet at the same time, whenever he sees someone in trouble or some sort of wrongdoing, he jumps right into the fray. I grew up with both an SNES and a Genesis, and I’ve always been more of a Sonic > Mario guy (spoilers Mario won’t be appearing on this list). Like I said before, he’s just cool.

Of course, Sonic’s abilities are his biggest appeal. Naturally, I love his super speed. I remember the first time playing the Chemical Plant Zone and you go down that really long ramp, and Sonic starts running so fast that it looks like the screen can’t even keep up with him, that was like, “Whoa.” I know it was deliberately done to give you a sense of Sonic’s speed, but yeah, mission accomplished. I still love that part when I play Sonic 2 to this day. Then there’s that moment in Hydrocity where he runs so fast that he runs over the surface of the water. Sega was always good with the Genesis games of helping you “feel” how fast he was going.

Super/Hyper Sonic is really cool, too. It’s a great reward for getting all the Chaos Emeralds, and just absolutely destroying everything without much effort is a great feeling. Of course, the best reward for getting all the Emeralds was getting the Doomsday Zone in Sonic 3 & Knuckles. So good. Admittedly, Super Sonic hasn’t been all that great since the Genesis games because they’ve mostly held him back for “Last Story” stuff, although they’ve brought it back for the last couple of games. Regardless, it’s a lot of fun to use. I also liked the various shields they had in Sonic 3 & Knuckles, and it was awesome that they brought them back for Sonic Generations.

Oh, and I guess I can’t finish up this writeup without throwing in “Come on! Step it up!” and “You’re too slooooooooow!”

Bonus Question: Who you got: Mario or Sonic?

38. Brave Fencer Musashi
external image

Oh hey, it’s that game they included for free when you bought that Final Fantasy VIII demo! Seriously, that’s the only reason I own this game. Including demos of highly anticipated games with games that probably wouldn’t do well on their own is a brilliant marketing strategy. I’m surprised more companies don’t do it. I was riding high off of the hype from beating FFVII and FFT within the past year, so the thought of having a playable demo of FFVIII was too appealing to pass up. I played the heck out of that demo, too, to the point that I don’t really like doing the Dollet mission whenever I play the game now.

Anyway, what was I talking about? Oh right, Brave Fencer Musashi. Yeah, this turned out to be a pretty good game. Apparently, Musashi is supposed to be some legendary hero from another time, and Princess Fillet of the Allucaneet Kingdom (Nearly everyone’s name in this game is some sort of food pun, so the name is the kingdom is pronounced like “All you can eat”) has the power to summon the legendary hero to their time to aid them whenever a crisis arises. Apparently, all the royal family of that kingdom possess that special ability, so it’s hereditary or it’s passed down. Anyway, when they summon Musashi into their world, he’s just some little teenage boy who doesn’t have any recollection of being this legendary hero, so the princess is a little disappointed. But regardless, they don’t have much choice, so they try to get him to help them out and save their kingdom.

The story is generally pretty lighthearted but enjoyable. It never really takes itself too seriously, which is nice. It’s silly and it knows it, which is better than being silly while trying to be serious! It does have a couple of serious moments that are pretty good, like where you find out that Jon is actually Colonel Capricciola! I totally didn’t see that one coming either. This may have been the first game I played that had extensive voice acting in it as well. It was often pretty cheesy (“Y’all gonna get a lickin’!”), but it wasn’t outright bad, from what I recall.

The gameplay is where Brave Fencer Musashi really excels though. It’s an action RPG, so there are no random battles, which is nice. As Musashi, you have two swords, Fusion and Lumina (A Ford and a Chevy working side by side, huh? Who’d have thought). Fusion is a small sword that also has the ability to Assimilate, which basically means you can throw it at an enemy and steal their powers, a la Kirby. There are like 25-30 different abilities, too, so you get a good variety. Some of them are situational (like there’s a power that lets you jump higher so you can reach an area you couldn’t before) and some of them grant you special attacks, like a laser. Lumina is a large sword that grows more powerful as the game progresses and you unlock the powers from the various elemental scrolls, and those powers are generally used to help you solve puzzles or open a new area in dungeons. You usually have to use that special power to defeat the boss of the area where you unlocked the scroll, too.

The game can be pretty challenging, too. Some of the dungeons are tough, and it’s got some pretty difficult puzzles as well, like trying to shut down Steamwood before it explodes. The last dungeon is really good, too, and it does a great job of mixing it up so you essentially have to use everything you’ve learned in order to beat it. It also has several good boss fights, especially the last boss. I remember it being a hard fight and dying a whole lot of times before I finally beat it. It was fun though. This is another one of those games I’d like to play through again one of these days to see how well it holds up. Either way, it couldn’t possibly be worse than Samurai Legend Musashi, but that’s a rant for another time!

Bonus Question: Is there a game you bought for a reason other than the game itself?

Bonus Question: Is there a game you bought for a reason other than the game itself?

Brave Fencer Musashi for the FFVIII demo and Dragon Quest VIII for the Final Fantasy XII demo. :D

Also, I think a big chunk of the reason you don't see this done so often anymore is just how digitalized much of the gaming industry has become. Demos are often set to 'download dates' and such these days. It's just a different, more efficient but colder sort of a world now.

That said, Dragon's Dogma comes packed with a very early Resident Evil 6 demo. That's sure to turn some heads. So it can still be done if there are several months to spare, I guess!

I can't think of any right now but I'm sure I have.

Usually things that were really hard/took a while and I was inches away and defeat could come any second.

Most recently I was probably very nervous during the whole final dungeon and boss fight of FFIII. The first time anyway.
Not sure about shaking because the turn-based nature gave you plenty of time to take a breather.

Bonus Question Answer: (because proper formatting on WP7 is simply not worth the hassle)

For the final bosses of every MGS game my first time around I was definitely like that. Otherwise... Hmm. All the optionals in FFV, Emerald and Ruby in FFVII, Omega in VIII, Yiazmat for like 20 minutes in XII before my hand fell asleep, the final battleground in ME3 for its last 30 seconds, and a certain haunting scene in Xenogears the first time I played it.

Yes actually. I am ashamed to say that I did it with the Sly collection because I heard how easy it was to collect trophies >_____>. Of course, I had never played a Sly game before, and I'm really enjoying it now.

Bonus Question: Have you ever had a moment in a game where you were so nervous while you were playing that you were shaking?

****Spoilers****

Yeah. Spider-man for the N64/PS1/Dreamcast. I would always panic during the last level when Monster Oc would chase you, dying when the camera angle changed because I couldn't figure out that I was supposed to web-zip.

****End Spoilers****

Also the first Ape Escape. Primarily when facing the T-Rex, fighting the knight, Specter both times, Jake, and that damn monkey in the final level that you have to chase out with the RC car!

Mario > Sonic. For the "ever bought a game for a reason other than the game" the closest I've come to it is buying a game just for multiplayer because a friend wanted to play it, which I'm not sure counts.

Bonus Question: What is your favorite “The good guys lose” moment in a game?

Picking a favorite "good guys lose" scenario would be like picking my favorite child-- you know, if I liked kids. It's really hard to do it incorrectly. If I had to pick one, it'd be that time Squall died, though. (never will I be silenced!) No in all seriousness the Tales of Symphonia moment I mentioned earlier (even if you don't recall the post, I'm sure you know the one) is probably the one, because these moments are always better with boss fights (that you can futilely beat with enough skill) to give you the illusion of hope.

Bonus Question: Have you ever had a moment in a game where you were so nervous while you were playing that you were shaking?

The shaking thing only ever happens with me when I'm going to lose a lot of effort if I screw it up and it's a pretty difficult section to nail down so the feeling that I could screw up is there. Diablo 2 Hardcore mode (one death and your character goes poof) is really good at this if you don't instantly vaporize simply because you put a lot of effort into your character and don't want to see that go down the drain when you're in trouble. Other stuff like tough bosses in a game like a Touhou or a Devil May Cry game can do it too if I've been working at it forever. Never happened from like, environment like you were talking about though.

I already have the game... then I found a collector's box with an OST. Sold!

Have you ever had a moment in a game where you were so nervous while you were playing that you were shaking?

Shaking? Not that I remember... closest is when I tried to perfect rhythm games like Rhythm Heaven and EBA. Oh, and then there was that time I managed to get 100 Lightning Bolt dodges. Or was that 200? Anyway, I got the reward, but holy crap was I concentrating.

It's 200 for the Lightning Dodger mini-game.

The first time I made the final of a big tournament in an online game I play. The game's a variant of competitive bubble-bobble, where the type of breaks (attacks) you make affect what enters your opponents screen. The prize was a rare item that was a) very prestigious and b) extremely expensive in in-game terms. The level of opposition at the end was unsurprisingly top notch, but after nine months or so of practicing I was holding my own. In the event, I lost the final, partly due to nerves. I've since won nearly 20 such tournaments over five years or so.

200 it is.

Didn't help that I was half asleep... but for some reason, that put me in the zone.
