Oh, wait, that's right. They're called Eidolons in IX. My bad. I remembered it started with an E though.

Though personally, I always called them guardians and summons.

SSBM Main: Um...Roy, I think. It's been so long since I've played Melee and all of my Brawl mains were introduced in that game (Lucario, Pokémon Trainer, and I guess Snake's probably my number three.)

Favorite Good Guys Lose Moment: SPOILERS FOR SAKURA TAISEN V IN MESSAGE DETAIL

Mario or Sonic: Sonic.

Favorite bad guy turned good: I saw someone else do a non-video game related example so I've gotta go with Fate Testarossa. If limited to video games only, Gilgamesh from Final Fantasy V.

And you can fight that optional boss earlier, though it usually isn't a good idea.

What, now you want me to start using spoiler bars in other writeups? That sounds like more hassle than it's worth!

Not to mention it takes up precious character space for my writeups, especially considering "spoiler" has to be such a long word and they count these <> things four characters apiece!

34. Tali’Zorah vas Normandy (Mass Effect)
Quote: “What could I possibly be suggesting? I mean, a young woman gets rescued by a dashing commander who lets her join his crew and then goes off to save the galaxy? How could she possibly develop any kind of interest in him?”
external image

Look at that quote. Isn’t Tali just adorable? Her romance arc with Shepard in Mass Effect is really sweet, I think. You can tell she really loves him, and, like the quote above indicates, for good reason. I thought it was interesting when she joins your crew in Mass Effect 2, and a couple of other crew members start commenting about the way Tali acts around Shepard, like Kelly mentioning how she takes notice of him whenever he enters the room and stuff like that. The romantic dialogues with Tali in ME2 are really nice, too, especially the way she acts all shy and flustered around him whenever she tries to talk about her feelings for Shepard. It’s cute, really. I like the continuation of their romance in ME3 as well, especially when you’re on Rannoch right before you take down the Reaper and she tells Shepard she loves him. Plus, their dialogue on the Geth ship where they’re kind of flirting with each other without trying to be too obvious, and then EDI comes straight out and blurts that she’s aware that they’ve been intimate together and they’re no need to try to hide it. Great stuff.

Of course, there’s more to Tali than her romantic arc. I talked a lot about her loyalty mission in the moments list, but it’s fantastic. She goes through a wide range of emotions throughout the whole thing, dealing with her confusion at being accused of treason in the first place, her audacity at the quarian council’s ulterior motives, and being heartbroken at discovering what her father had done and then finding his dead body. Liz/Ash Sroka (whichever name she’s going by nowadays) really nails her voice acting out of the park for the whole series, but especially in this mission.

I do enjoy Tali’s growth throughout the series, starting off as a young girl on her pilgrimage and eventually becoming an admiral of the quarian fleet (and even if she gets exiled in ME2, she’s still respected enough that she gets brought back secretly as an advisor). I also enjoy her interactions with Legion. The whole conflict with the quarians and the geth is one of the more fascinating aspects of the Mass Effect series, and although Tali greatly distrusts him at first, she gradually comes to understand him and realizes the error of her people’s ways. It all comes to a climax at the end of the Rannoch mission, where Shepard and Tali can (if you so choose and you play your cards right) persuade the quarians to make peace with the geth and live in harmony once again. You get a fantastic exchange, where Legion asks Tali if she remembers the question that originally started the entire conflict: “Does this unit have a soul?” Then after Legion finishes uploading the Reaper code and says he has to go to them, Tali tells him that the answer to his question was “Yes.” It’s just a really powerful scene.

Bonus Question: Who is your favorite Mass Effect squadmate?

34. Super Smash Bros. Brawl
external image

Well, I already talked a lot about what I liked about Smash Bros. in general with the Melee writeup, so we won’t touch on that again here. “Melee vs. Brawl” has been a big debate on Board 8 since SSBB came out (over 4 years ago now, hard to believe), although it seems like it’s settled down some recently (likely in conjunction with the lessened frequency of Ulti posts nowadays). As for me, I’ve always landed on the Brawl side of the debate. For one thing, I’ve never been a “serious” Smash Bros. player, so I don’t really care about (or even really notice) all the stuff that it supposedly changed for the worse with the mechanics. It’s never really affected my enjoyment of the game.

Of course, being the casual player I am, the biggest draw for Brawl over Melee is the character roster. I remember being on the board when Snake was announced for the game. It was insane. I think someone saved a screenshot of what the board’s front page looked like at the time. I’ll see if I can find it. That first trailer revealing him, so good. Snake’s a lot of fun to play as, too. I enjoy using all of his various explosives, and he’s got some good normals as well. Sonic is really fun for me. He’s harder to win with because he doesn’t have very many good kill moves (unless you count his Final Smash, which is good for at least three kills every time you activate it), but his speed gives him a good pressure game. I like to attack, attack, attack whenever I play Sonic and never let up. Some of the other new characters are fun, too, like Meta Knight and Ike, but Snake and Sonic are the selling points of Brawl for me. Also, nothing will ever top Snake Kirby with the goatee, simply amazing.

I did enjoy the addition of Final Smashes as well, although some are better than others (LOL Donkey Kong). Sure, some of them broke the heck out of the game (Hello there Super Sonic), but again, I’m not a serious player, so watching everyone freak out when someone gets a Smash Ball and either running the heck away or trying to beat it out of the person who just got it is a good time. Brawl also introduced some neat new weapons, like the sticky bomb and the cracker launcher. And while the game does have some laughably bad stages (75m and Electroplankton, I’m looking at you!), there are some really fun ones, too (Isle Delfino, Halberd, the Fire Emblem one). Overall, it’s easy to have some good times playing Brawl.

So there you have it. I’m sure someone will be displeased that I ranked Brawl higher than Melee, but they’re both great games to me. Who knows what the series’ foray onto the Wii U/3DS will bring to the table, but I’m looking forward to it! I know some people didn’t like Brawl using third party characters, but I’m hoping they bring in a new one for the next game, too!

Bonus Question: What is your favorite Smash Bros. game?

I've played and loved all 3; I'll go with Brawl narrowly over Melee I think, it's the game my now-girlfriend and I got to know each other playing, so lots of good memories.

Btw, mentioned I was doing an FFX playthrough earlier - curious, would anyone be interested if I did a playthrough topic giving my thoughts on the game and documenting how the challenge goes? Figured this seemed a good place to canvas opinion before I make the topic and watch it sink like a stone :p.

Oh right, nice information to know regarding spoilers:

You can change how you choose to have spoilers appear in Message Board Display Settings. You can choose to have them appear when you highlight them, when you hover over them, or you can apparently set it so the spoiler bar never shows up at all.

I know Maximum Carnage and the Clone Saga are generally regarded as a mess by "serious" comic book people (or so I hear), but I liked them when I was a kid!

NIER SPOILERS BELOW

34. Nier – The Shadowlord Appears

This is Nier’s “It just got real” moment. For the first half of the game, you’ve been searching for the Sealed Verses and trying to find a cure for Nier’s daughter, Yonah. It’s basically been a series of fetch quests (along with a ton of other fetch quests if you do the sidequests on top of that!) up to this point in the game. You’ve met some interesting people and visited some cool locations along the way, including some really creepy stuff at Emil’s mansion, but this is the moment that begins to elevate Nier to the next level. Not to say the first half of the game is boring or anything. It’s still fun, but this is the turning point of the game here.

At first, it doesn’t seem like something you can’t handle. Sure, a bunch of Shades invading the village is very unusual, but Nier’s good enough to take care of them. And then…holy crap that is the biggest Shade I have ever seen. This part can be really tense because you’re not only having to avoid the giant Shade’s giant fist slams (as well as the ensuing shockwaves), you have to deal with the smaller Shades all around you trying to attack you as well. It’s pretty hectic. Once you do enough damage, Nier uses the power of the Sealed Verses to tear off one of the big Shade’s arms…only to have it regenerate a few seconds later. Oh dear. Then it starts heading for the library, where all of the townspeople have gathered, including Yonah. You keep attacking and attacking it, but nothing seems to keep it down. I just love the sense of dread that permeates this sense as you’re trying to stop it from getting to the library, but no matter what you do, it doesn’t work. Finally, Kaine appears to help just in time to incapacitate the thing, and it’s time to head into the library to make sure everyone’s okay.

But we’re not done yet! While the thing is barely more than a head and tentacles now, this Shade just won’t die. Weiss comes up with the idea to seal it in the basement since they can’t seem to kill it, and after a bit of a struggle, Nier manages to blast it into the basement and Kaine tries to hold it back until they can lock it with the key. Then the next big twist hits out of nowhere, quite literally, as Nier is impaled through the shoulder with a magic spike. As he collapses to the ground, we see a Shade who is clearly different from the rest (He has a distinguishable face, for one thing), and he’s got Yonah, to boot! Plus, he has a Grimoire of his own, Grimoire Wesker, errr, Noir. He starts trying to persuade Weiss that they need to merge into one for the sake of the Shadowlord’s plan to create a new paradise, and it almost seems to be working, until Kaine’s profanity-laced rant seems to snap him back to reality. Weiss’s speech to Noir after he snaps out of his trance is great as well, especially his snarky comments about his companions. Classic Weiss dialogue there.

NIER SPOILERS CONTINUED

Then you actually have to fight Grimoire Noir, only he’s stolen your Sealed Verses powers. As you damage him, you slowly regain your powers, which is cool. After you beat him, he makes one last attempt to apprehend Weiss by force, but Nier jumps in the way and gets impaled again. With that, the Shadowlord departs without so much as a word, content to take Yonah for now and deal with the rest later. Unfortunately, there’s still the problem of the Shade in the basement. Kaine’s solution is to have Emil petrify her, which would act as a seal to keep it in there. Weiss’s comments to her right before she gets petrified are great. “Spare me the good-byes, hussy. I imagine it will take more than this to kill you.”

But this is a great sequence of events because things go from bad to worse to worst for the heroes. Nier’s a great hero in the sense that he’s so resolutely determined to do whatever it takes to protect Yonah and the village that he’ll fight as hard as he can, even when the situation seems hopeless, but even he reaches the limits of what he can do in this scene. It’s really a shame that the game starts you right after all this stuff ends in the New Game+ stuff, because it’s so good.

33. Bowser Koopa (Super Mario Bros.)
Quote: “Did somebody page the king of awesome?”
external image

Yes, in fact, we did page the king of awesome! He’s lighting in a bottle! He’s earthquake in a can! He’s the one and only Bowser Koopa, a dude so great that there literally was no Mushroom Kingdom before he came into existence (bonus points if you remember that topic). In the main platformer series, Bowser is a villain whose main thing is kidnapping princesses and conquering stuff, up to and including the galaxy itself, but he really came into his own starting with Super Mario RPG. He steals the show in most of the Mario RPG games, even the ones in which he doesn’t even really have an active role in the main storyline for, like The Thousand-Year Door! Nintendo finally rewarded Bowser with his first official playable starring role in Mario & Luigi: Bowser’s Inside Story a couple years back, and of course, he was awesome in that, too.

While it’s the Mario RPGs that cement Bowser’s place on this list, that’s not to say he’s bad in the other Mario games. Bowser’s had some excellent boss fights throughout the series. I already discussed the last boss of Mario 64 on the moments list, but that’s far from the only good boss fight he has in the series. Of course, he also has some stinkers, like the last boss fight of Mario 3 and Bowser in a Bathtub (mario how dare you ruin my family vacation. I kinda miss when Bowser just had a dinosaur roar and never said anything out loud in the N64 games, mostly because I don’t really like his current voice. I don’t think it fits him well), but those are exceptions. While Bowser isn’t the deepest villain in the world, he’s certainly done a good job putting up a great fight in the finale of a game, even when he’s the protagonist, like in Bowser’s Inside Story!

Bowser’s pretty fun to play as in the various Mario multiplayer games as well. He’s the best character to use for battle mode in Mario Kart 64 (along with DK) because you can use his weight to spin people out and make them lose a balloon. While he’s usually one of the slower characters in any game he’s featured in as a playable character, he’s also one of the strongest. If you can learn to deal with the speed disadvantage (or you play with people who aren’t very good, like I do), you can wreak some havoc with him in the Smash Bros. games. He’s a bit of a high-risk, high-reward character. Bowser’s also great for blasting homers in the baseball games or long drives in the golf games. He’s a world class troll in the Mario Party series, too.

Bowser was really awesome in the old Mario cartoons as well. Sure, he was full of those typical cheesy and puntastic 90s cartoon villain one-liners (“He who Koops last Koops best!”), but he was still pretty hilarious. Also like most 90s cartoon villains, he wasn’t very intimidating as a villain most of the time. He could be a bit of a bumbler, but he was darn entertaining. RPG Bowser has a similar personality in some ways, although there are some differences. Regardless, Bowser is a villain I enjoy more for his general entertainment value than his villainy (final boss battles aside). All hail the king of awesome!

Hmm. It'd be cheating to count Bowser Boss battles where he's not the one we beat up, right?

Mario 64... was way too easy. Can't remember what SMB 3 and New SMB BOwser battles were like. Weird. Then there's Bowser X and Bowser fights where he's possessed in the Mario and Luigi series. I'm going with Yoshi's Island Baby Bowser, mostly for the music.

33. Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door
external image

Speaking of games Bowser is awesome in, here’s one of them! I just recently finished up a playthrough of TTYD about a month or so ago, so it’s pretty fresh in my mind. I’m sure some of you original Paper Mario fans aren’t going to like me saying this, but here it is. TTYD is one of those sequels that improves upon the original in almost every way. About the only thing I’d say the original Paper Mario does better than TTYD is the last boss fight.

One of the things I liked about The Thousand-Year Door is that they actually tried to take advantage of the unique style of the games. The first Paper Mario was just 2-D characters in a 3-D world, but they didn’t really do much with it. TTYD used the fact that Mario is, uhh, made of paper to introduce some new gameplay mechanics, like having him turn to the side to fit into narrow walkways, having him turn into a paper airplane to cross large gaps, and things like that. It’s a lot of fun, and it opens up new possibilities for design in dungeons and stuff.

I really enjoy fighting battles in TTYD as well. Introducing an “audience” who watches you fight was a really cool idea, and it encourages you to do your best and stay engaged in battles because the better you do, the bigger your crowd gets, which has additional benefits such as regenerating your Star Power faster. Like I discussed with the Mario RPG writeup, I’ve always liked the concept of timed hits and stuff, so TTYD delivers in that department. The game also introduces “Stylish Moves,” which don’t do any additional damage but they do impress the crowd so you can build that Star Power even faster (and they look so stylish!).

TTYD also has some pretty cool partners. The Yoshi Dude, Vivian, Bobbery, Mrs. Mowz, and Goombella are all fun partners, both in battle and out of battle. Koops is pretty useful in battle although he’s kind of a lame character, and I only ever use Flurrie when I need her ability to blow something away. But like I said, they’re pretty cool overall. I like using Goombella’s Tattle ability because she had interesting stuff to say most of the time. Yoshi Dude’s Gulp ability was awesome, good for some ownage. Vivian had some good offensive and defensive abilities, so she was a useful partner.

TTYD also had some really great locations. It was just a great world. There was the Glitz Pit, the Excess Express, Cortez’s island, and the Palace of Shadow. Rogueport itself was a pretty solid hub, too, with some interesting people in it, especially Luigi and his adventures trying to find Marvelous Compass pieces so he can save Princess Éclair. Those are some pretty awesome stories, and I’m still holding out hope for a Paper Luigi one of these days! The scenes in between chapters that chronicle Peach’s and Bowser’s adventures are really fun, too. They’re great interludes in between the main story, and Bowser’s stuff is generally very entertaining. Fun game.

Bonus Question: Which Mario RPG is your favorite?

Aww yeah, PM:TTYD. Really solid RPG. I love both that one and PM1 for various reasons and I switch between which one I like more.

Speaking of which, PM1's final boss fight is probably my favorite Bowser fight. I can't really think of anything else, unless you count the "Rookie" fights in M&L:SSS. And even then, I'd probably pick PM1 because that one actually made Bowser pretty intimidating and it was a fairly fun fight. Grodus/Bowser/Kammy gauntlet was pretty good, too, but half of that fun came from Grodus, so I can't give Bowser too much credit!

It's tough for me.

TTYD does improve on the original in lots of ways, but a semi-recent (year or two ago) playthrough of both of them had put the original just over it.

Can't really quantify it too well though.
Best I can say is that Paper Mario had more "game" to it. TTYD had some great ideas, especially with story, but it came with the cost of some good old traditional gaming. I think it needed a few more solid dungeons.

As a minor point, I prefer Toad Town connecting to the different locations organically than how Rogueport had warps underneath.

I don't really get that complaint. TTYD basically does everything the original does, only better. I'm not sure what you're trying to suggest the game sacrificed.

I think it needed a few more solid dungeons.

Kind of self-explanatory.

A good example would be Ch.2, where you traverse the dry dry mountain, have a big old desert to explore, and then head into the puzzle-y fortress.
TTYD on the other hand had Ch.6, which was heavy on dialogue and story, but had virtually no battles and from a gameplay perspective required you to just walk back and forth looking for something new in the environment to interact with.

Consider those the extremes that illustrate my point.

Chapter 6 was the second best chapter in TTYD! Loved it.

Can't really explain what PM1 has over PM2. I do think PM1 is more traditional and feels more like a RPG focused on exploring a world. Kind of the same idea with Earthbound and Mother 3. And I think there is a point that PM1 has more solid dungeons. PM2 had a lot of creative ideas. 4 of the 8 chapters have traditional dungeons while 4 of them tried to go for something unique. Some of them succeeded really well (3, 6), others didn't (2, 4).
