Next Zelda game IMO should either be a direct sequel to Twilight Princess (though please don't include Midna or anything about the Twili...not that I hated them or anything, but I just don't want to see them return!), or it should star someone other than Link.

Series I most want to see revived...not the Chrono series please, I don't want to see that done. Probably...Metroid? Either a SOTC-style boss rush (haven't played that game yet, but I may very well get around to doing so in as little as under a week, and it sounds like something more faithful to Super Metroid than any game in that series developed since aside from Metroid Prime 1 - pretty sad that I live in a world where Nintendo pretty much sold the Metroid series to Sony), a horror survival game, or an Other M-style action game except made by Platinum Games instead of Team Ninja and with a lot less story.

Zelda Zelda Zelda

Also I still feel like modern Sonic games take away control from the player too much.

...well I can't say I really agree on Zelda seeing how my top three games in that series are Ocarina of Time, The Wind Waker, and Twilight Princess (with LTTP a close fourth, and all four of those all-time favorites of mine)...not to mention what I've heard about Skyward Sword doesn't exactly excite me to play that game...

Also, while my favorite Mario game is Super Mario Galaxy, I'd like to see a return to Super Mario 64's gameplay style for the next 3D Mario.

Your loss if so; it's the best game in the series.

And Slanted, no way. It's a cult classic. It just so happens to have a largely separate fanbase from the CT gurus!

I know you're not going to want to hear this, but blame Kingdom Hearts. It introduced a new franchise with far greater profitability not long after Cross came out, and then the copyright on Break expired in '04.

But then again, you're wrong about a lot of things.

Also, I say this as someone who played Cross before Trigger and isn't a huge Trigger fan to begin with, so this isn't a "biased Chrono Trigger fanboy" perspective here.

Nomura shouldn't leave Final Fantasy. Even with his Versus Deadlines Debacle (2005-), he's still one of the better writers left with the company.

Which is sort of scary, and has a lot to do with the Mysterious Yoshinori Kitase Illness (2004-). Not to be confused with the Blatant Yasumi Matsuno Illness of 2006, the Mysterious Yoshinori Kitase Illness is more of a mental thing. Namely, he seems incapable of writing anymore, whereas he used to be quite good at it.

He is credited with having worked on FFVII's story, actually. It's perfectly arguable that his contributions were among the weaker ones to the plot, though, since whenever he's directed I've enjoyed his work less.

What is your favorite new series of this generation?

Since Ace Attorney counts, HELL YES THAT ONE.

What is your favorite Sonic moment?

Hmm... only ever played that Bioware game. Though him appearing in Smash was an oddly... heartwarming moment.

Who is your favorite video game female?

*points to username*

Other than Pram, Asagi Igawa, Momoyo Kawakami, Samus, Nia Lochlain, and Maya Fey. Other than the top spot, everything keeps switching around though.

What series would you like to see experience a revival?

Wild Arms. WILD FREAKIN' ARMS. I want my WA 6 and glorious WA 2 Remake :(

Other than that... have NIS finally make Makai Wars.

Re: who wrote what in the FF series...

Nojima was scenario writer for FFVII, FFVIII, FFX (w/ Kitase) and KH1. FFVI was mainly written by Sakaguchi, but there was input from others, including Kitase and Ito. FFIX was Sakaguchi (w/ Ito). FFT was Matsuno, and so was FFXII, until he left. Nomura hasn't written particularly much.

Shadow Hearts: Covenant spoilers below!

28. Shadow Hearts: Covenant – Confronting Ishimura

This scene really stood out to me when I first played Shadow Hearts: Covenant because you don’t see this kind of thing much in video games, with the main character showing no sympathy for a small child and no mercy for a terminally ill man, despite how corrupt he may be. The way Yuri gets completely outraged and just goes off on Ishimura when he starts begging him to spare his grandson is something else, how he vividly points out the hypocrisy of a man who refuses to show pity asking for it himself. Then Yuri just breaks down emotionally after beating up on Ishimura for a while, and that’s how the scene ends, with him unable to do the deed and finish him off. This is one of those scenes that might be easy to overlook for some people, but it left an impression on me. I’m finding it difficult to put my exact feelings into words here, but suffice it to say, the unusual circumstances of this scene earn it this place on the list.

The interaction between Yuri and Ishimura is interesting in the sense that you don’t see a lot of philosophizing or debate between the two of them. It’s pretty straightforward. Yuri basically asks Ishimura what his plan was, and he obliges, I guess because he feels there’s no point in hiding it. Ishimura generally doesn’t try to make excuses for his actions, other than saying it was all done for the sake of protecting Japan from the west. It’s a pretty frank exchange between both characters, with no posturing, mockery, or over the top laughter from the villain, which is also kinda unusual. In the end, you feel sorry for the guy more than anything else. You don’t really hate him. You just realize that he’s a pretty pitiful human being, but he IS human as evidenced by his concern for his grandson and his grandson’s apparent love for him.

But it’s Yuri’s reaction to Ishimura begging him to spare his grandson’s life that makes this scene as good as it is. Like something in his mind just snaps. “Don’t you DARE beg for his life!” It was a pretty “Whoa” moment for me to see this scene unfold the way it did, to see the so-called hero shove a small kid out of the way and beat up on a defenseless old man, and yet I don’t think any less of him after watching this scene. I respect him more for catching Ishimura’s hypocrisy and calling him out on it, which is something I might not have noticed if Yuri doesn’t point it out. Good scene.

27. Yuna (Final Fantasy X)
Quote: “No matter what happens, I’ll see this through to the end. I promise.”
external image

I think Yuna is a wonderful character in Final Fantasy X. Hedy Burress could be considered a different story altogether, and people need to learn to differentiate between the two because a lot of the criticism I hear people give for Yuna is really criticism for her voice actress. Anyway, I really love her character design. She’s very pretty, and I think her outfit is very pretty as well. It makes her look…elegant, I guess. I love Yuna’s selfless, self-sacrificing nature. I love how she’s willing to put others first, no matter how much strain it puts on herself, such as the time after Operation Mi’ihen where she stayed up all night trying to help the wounded and sending the fallen. I think her innocence and naïveté are rather endearing. I also love how she stays on the path of the summoner, even as the world as she knows it crumbles around her and Yevon betrays her. She may not look it on the outside, but Yuna is a very strong woman.

Yuna has her lion’s share of great scenes and great speeches (although some of them are hurt a bit by Hedy Burress’s lackluster voice work at times). She has several “moment of truth” scenes throughout FFX. The first is when she stands trial before Yevon and the whole truth unfolds before her. She can’t believe what she’s hearing, and she’s visibly shaken up by it. Yet she refuses to accept the “truth” according to Yevon, even though it means she’ll be branded a traitor and sentenced to death. It was a tough stand to take, but she still took it anyway.

The second big “moment of truth” speech happens at the foot of Mt. Gagazet when Yuna manages to convince the Ronso to let her pass. She’s one of those characters whose own words can speak for themselves better than I can express it myself, so we’ll just give the quotes for it here:

Kelk: “You have been branded a traitor, but still you would fight Sin? Lost to the temple, hated by the people, yet you continue your pilgrimage? Everything lost! What do you fight for?”

Yuna: “I fight for Spira. The people long for the Calm. I can give it to them. It’s all I can give. Defeating Sin, ending pain…this I can do.”

Yuna’s resolve and selflessness are on full display here. I just love that quote. She’s determined to do what she believes is right, no matter what it costs and even if she has to stand alone. She’s pledging to fight for people who don’t even want her to succeed. It takes a lot of integrity and a strong will to do something like that. It’s really admirable, I think.

Of course, there’s the speech right before you fight Yunalesca, where she refuses to make anyone her Final Aeon and refuses to give the people false hope. Yuna has a great line that she gives to Tidus during this part. “It would be so easy…to let my fate just carry me away…following this same path my whole life through. But I know…I can’t. What I do, I do…with no regrets.” That very last line is one of the few Hedy Burress just nailed. So good. Even though Yuna has been working toward this moment of obtaining the Final Aeon and defeating Sin for essentially her whole life, she refuses to sacrifice one of her own guardians to become Sin and continue the cycle if that’s what it meant. Yuna was willing to go against the flow so she wouldn’t do something she would regret (urge to rant about FFX-2…rising…must resist).

Yuna is just amazing. She refuses to do things the way they’ve been done simply because that’s the way they’ve always been done. Yuna does start off as a naïve follower of Yevon, but she gradually learns to stand on her own and to do what she believes is best. Again, I’m just gonna let her say it:

Yunalesca: “Yevon’s teachings and the Final Summoning give the people of Spira hope. Without hope, they would drown in their sorrow. Now, choose. Who will be your fayth? Who will be the one to renew Spira’s hope?”
Yuna: “No one. I would have gladly died. I live for the people of Spira, and would have gladly died for them. But no more! The Final Summoning…is a false tradition that should be thrown away.”
Yunalesca: “No. It’s our only hope. Your father sacrificed himself to give that hope to the people. So they would forget sorrow.”
Yuna: “Wrong. My father…My father wanted…to make Spira’s sorrow go away. Not just cover it up with lies!”
Yunalesca: “Sorrow cannot be abolished. It is meaningless to try.”
Yuna: “My father…I loved him. So I…I will live with my sorrow, I will live my own life! I will defeat sorrow, in his place. I will stand my ground and be strong. I don’t know when it will be but someday, I will conquer it. And I will do it without…false hope.”

Finally, there’s Yuna’s ending speech. You could tell she was dying on the inside, especially with that “Never forget them” at the end, but she was still able to make an optimistic speech about Spira belonging to the people again, and she could even smile, even after the disappointment of whistling for Tidus and him not showing up right beforehand (and I gotta admit, that scene nearly brought me to tears the last time I played FFX, and I’ve seen that scene literally dozens of times before that. Heck, I’m getting emotional just reading these quotes).

I don’t know how in the world people hate Yuna (although I’m sure someone will be glad to oblige me). She’s just fantastic. Just doing this writeup is making me want to move her up even higher on this list. She’s my favorite Final Fantasy female, and it’d take something special to displace her from that position. Yuna has some pretty…ballsy moments in the game, too, if I can phrase it that way. She confronted Seymour about Jyscal’s murder all on her own, and that took some guts, even if she went about it the wrong way. Then there was the “Believe” scene, which I absolutely love.

Finally, let’s deal with Yuna’s relationship with Tidus really quickly because this writeup has already gone on too long! I think their interactions can be downright adorable at times. She’s very sweet, and she can be pretty funny with him at times, too. I like the scenes early on when they’re first getting to know each other, and Yuna talks to him about Zanarkand and Jecht. They’re pretty interesting conversations.

Of course, there’s the famous lake scene. I love how she seems to be on the verge of quitting, and then she realizes that she just can’t do it. She can’t get away from it. She can’t escape from what she feels to be her duty to the people of Spira. “I’ll continue. I must. If I give up now…I could do anything I wanted to, and yet…Even if I was with you, I could never forget.” And then there’s this exchange, which has made it into my sig rotation:

Yuna: “Stay with me until the end. Please.”
Tidus: “Not until the end. Always.”

The scene with Tidus and Yuna in the ending is wonderful, too. The moment when she chases after him and passes through him gives me chills nearly every time. And it doesn’t matter that she only said “Thank you” in the Japanese version instead of “I love you.” It’s not that big of a deal! Oh, and by the way, Hedy Burress isn’t all bad. She can do pretty well with lines where the camera isn’t on Yuna’s face so she’s not worried about lip syncing. The line I posted for her quote is one of my favorites in the game. I just love the way she delivers it. Good stuff.

Bonus Question: Who is your favorite Final Fantasy female?
