I don't think it's necessary that Nier didn't learn about the revelations. His attitude in the entire half of the game is borderline fanatical, what with the whole 'Aerie blows up? Whatever, don't look back' spiel and everything after that. The game goes at some lengths to basically show that Nier just doesn't care about anything but saving Yonah and killing Shades anymore. Even if he had learned the truth of everything (and I think it's hinted a few times that he had an idea), it's doubtful that he would've cared.
Also, there's one small scene in the tree text segment where they meet a sentient Shade. Nier basically goes "whatever" and immediately kills it while Weiss is freaking out.
I think it's annoying when the best strategy is to spam the magic over and over. Especially the fist.
It doesn't really pay to get up close and risk damage when magic replenishes and does so much more damage.
I was fine with that because Nier's magic effects are amazing and fun to use. Every spell feels very visceral and has a dramatic effect. It isn't a hard game, but it's entertaining.
I'm struggling not to be painfully obvious for me and say Final Fantasy X for the soundtrack. Or an unoriginal soundtrack like Beatles Rock Band or something. Or a nostalgic cheese soundtrack like Sonic R, Dynasty Warriors or Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine (if the last one can even be said to have a soundtrack given there's only, like, 3 songs).

Rhythm Heaven is up there, and so is Super Mario RPG. Series include Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts... but I'll have to go with the Wild Arms series, mostly WA 2 and WA 3. Love me some Michiko Naruke.

Its always great when a game throws an unexpectedly touching moment from an unexpected source, and thats what you get here. After spending some time running around hunting Moon Crystals, Drachma just cant take it anymore. Hes had a singular focus all along: Kill Rhaknam. Vyse realizes how important this is to him, and hes been letting them use his own ship for their quest, so they agree to take a break from Finas mission for a little while so Drachma can get his revenge.
While they wait for Rhaknam to appear, we get a glimpse into a more personal side of Drachma. Up to this point in Skies of Arcadia, hes come across as a gruff, cold guy (although there were a few signs that he really does care, like coming back to help the party against the Red Gigas after he had initially abandoned them). We know he wants revenge against Rhaknam for attacking his ship way back when, but now we find theres a bit more to his tale.
The story about Drachmas son was really touching, especially when Vyse opens the small box to find all the feathers. As I said, its so unexpected to see something like this from Drachma, which adds to the effectiveness of this scene. Yet theres not much time to ponder all of this as Rhaknam appears, but hes not alone. Ramirez and several ships from the Valuan Armada are hot on his trail and blasting him with their cannons. You try to take out one of the ships so you can get a clear shot at Rhaknam with the Harpoon Cannon. Eventually, Drachma does get to sink the Harpoon Cannon into the arcwhale, but during all of the frenzy, Ramirez sneaks around behind the Little Jack and opens fire. Of course, its just a fishing boat, so it doesnt have the firepower to sustain an assault from a Valuan warship.
The next scene is really good as well. Vyse begs Drachma to abandon ship, even if it means giving up on killing Rhaknam for now, for the memory of his crew and his son. If he survives, he could get another chance, but if he dies, then itll have all been in vain. Drachma reluctantly relents (or so it seems), and everyone heads for the lifeboats. Vyse, Aika, and Fina all get into their boats, but Drachma doesnt join them. I love the moment right before he pushes Vyses boat off the ship. He just smirks, and as he stands on the edge of the ship watching Vyse sail away, he simply says, Goodbye. Skies of Arcadia doesnt use full voice acting, just voice clips at various points in the game. This was probably the best use of a voice clip in the story, because the way Drachma says it is heartbreaking, like hes accepting his own death. At this point, I was convinced that Drachma was going to die because there was no way the Little Jack could stay afloat after all the damage it took, so that made this even more emotional for me.

30. Terry Bogard (Fatal Fury) Quote: Im axin you if you could do me the favor of stopping your bleeding over my new shoes.
Haha, I was having a hard time coming up with a quote for Terry, as Im sure the one I chose indicates. He doesnt exactly have a lot of lines in the games! I actually dont have a lot of experience with his games. Ive only played the Fatal Fury games for the SNES, but they were a lot of fun. Terry was always the guy I liked to play as because he has a really cool design (Apparently, Terry was based on Japanese perceptions of American stereotypes, so this is what SNK thinks Americans are like!), and he had some fun moves. Burn Knuckle was always my favorite of his specials. Plus, his victory animation where he tosses his hat is so smooth.
But really, Terry isnt on this list primarily for video game reasons. Its more because of his roles in the Fatal Fury animes. Now maybe thats a bit cheating because Im a fan of his more for something not related to video games, but hey, its my list! I can do whatever I want! Terrys generally a pretty laidback guy, even when it comes to fighting. I do like how nonchalant he is when he fights. Hes just having a good time. He does take it seriously when someone hurts a person he cares about. This is especially true of Geese Howard, who kills both his father and his girlfriend.
Speaking of which, I like Terrys Lone Wolf persona. It becomes a big part of the third movie as he tries to keep his distance from Sulia because hes afraid of what will happen to her if they get too close. The third one is probably my favorite of the three, although it has its own plotline unrelated to the games, if only because Terry seems so totally outmatched by the bad guys. Hes got a couple of really cool moments in the game, like when his desperation causes him to unleash a massive Power Geyser, and the last fight of the movie where the situation basically causes him to reach the full potential of his power and helps him defeat a being of pure energy. Good stuff.
So yeah, Terry Bogard is just a cool dude all around. I probably didnt do this writeup the justice it deserves, but trust me, hes a good character.
Bonus Question: Is there a video game character youre a fan of for reasons other than video games?
The Fatal Fury movies are good, huh? Interesting. Maybe I should check em out.
Bonus Question: Is there a video game character youre a fan of for reasons other than video games?
Plenty. At least partially, anyway. In order from least weird to most... Toad from the Super Mario Bros Super Show, Master Chief from GameFAQs Contests, and X-Death from a prank "high school treasurer" write-in that I campaigned for (I'd elaborate but you know what I'm talking about). Probably others too but harder to think of em offhand.

After nearly 25 years, Bowser finally gets his first starring role, and he doesnt disappoint. I talked about this game a bit in my Bowser writeup, but hes pretty awesome in it. Hes got some pretty great one-liners, and hes really fun to play as. The premise for the story is simple, albeit silly. The Mushroom Kingdom has been overrun by this disease known as the Blorbs, which causes Toads to swell up into a ball. It turns out that the cause is related to this special kind of mushroom a merchant has been selling. This merchant is actually Fawful, who has been using these mushrooms to incapacitate the citizens so he can take over. On one of his routine invasions of the Mushroom Kingdom and subsequent defeats by the Mario Bros., Bowser runs into Fawful, who gives him his own special mushroom. However, this mushroom basically turns Bowser into a vacuum after he eats it, and he inhales Mario, Luigi, Peach, and several other Mushroom Kingdom residents in the aftermath. Now its up to Bowser to stop Fawful, with Mario and Luigi sort of working together with him from within to aid him.
The gameplay is really fun in Bowsers Inside Story. Bowser has his own set of moves, including the ability to inhale foes and let Mario and Luigi defeat them. Along the way, you can also gain the aid of various members of the Koopa Troop, such as Goombas, Thwomps, etc. Like other Mario RPGs, the battle system revolves around the idea of timed hits, which Ive mentioned before that I love. Each special move with the Koopa Troop has its own unique timed hit combo, some of them using the touch screen as well. There are also special battles where Bowser grows to gigantic proportions and has to fight a really big enemy. The gameplay for these is much more simplified. Its basically a glorified tug-o-war match, where you have to push the enemy to the edge before he pushes you to the other edge. Theyre pretty fun battles.
Of course, Mario and Luigi have their own role to play in this game. They usually work to supplement Bowsers natural abilities to help him get past areas he normally couldnt. This usually takes the form of silly mini-games, like using energy balls to massage Bowsers muscles so he can get strong enough to move an object or something. Like I said, it all sounds kinda weird, but the gameplay design is pretty fun. The inside of Bowsers body also functions as a series of dungeons as well, so you end up having to navigate it at various points throughout the game to progress the story. Despite the strange premise, it actually works out pretty well.
I would be remiss if I didnt mention the amazing final boss fight of the game, with its top notch battle music, although Im sure some of you will disagree on that point! (If you havent heard it, check it out here: Now its time to get all spoilery for a Mario game, yessir! The last boss fight against Dark Bowser and Fawful is really fun. I love how Dark Bowser uses all of your moves against you, and now you have to use the right timing to defend against them. Its a cool reversal of fortune kinda thing. The parts where you have to fight Fawful as Mario and Luigi are really good as well. Its just a really great fight, a fitting end to a great game. Also, I do like the scene in the ending where Peach sends Bowser a cake to thank him for all his help and he tries to act like he doesnt care, but after everyone leaves, he kinda looks around to make sure no one can see him and he takes a peek at it. Its kinda sweet in a way, really. Makes you think that maybe Bowsers not such a terrible guy after all.
Bonus Question: What is your favorite instance of getting to play as the bad guy in a game?
Also, for the bonus question (I would've elaborated in the post, but my writeup was exactly 4096 characters, so I couldn't!), it doesn't necessarily have to be a game where you play as the bad guy for the entire game, like Bowser's Inside Story.
I'm not sure if there are even that many examples, but that was the question that came to mind!

Bonus Question: What is your favorite Bowser boss battle?
NSMB Wii and Galaxy both have spectacular finales, as does World. Can't comment on Galaxy 2 yet (it's currently shipping though!) but I may revise the answer later on.
Bonus Question: Which Mario RPG is your favorite?
As it stands, probably Super Mario RPG, but I just picked up TTYD for a buck.
Bonus Question: What is your favorite Mega Man moment?
Definitely the end of Zero 4. Oh my god. Actually got me a little.
Bonus Question: What is your favorite Final Fantasy VI character?
Locke, for all the reasons you listed. He trumps the rest of the cast by a country mile, although I do enjoy Celes, Sabin, Edgar, Shadow, Kefka (not as much as many fans...), Cyan, Mog and Gogo a good bit. Setzer's alright too. The rest are kind of subpar. But that's a good showing. Oh, Gestahl is funny. >_>
Bonus Question: What is your favorite aspect of the Kingdom Hearts series: The Square stuff, the Disney stuff, or the original stuff (Sora, Riku, Organization XIII, etc.)?
XFD
Bonus Question: What is your favorite The Legend of Zelda moment?
Ganowned at the end of The Wind Waker, probably. The feeling of rush when I beat ALTTP again is always something wonderful though, and Skyward Sword's finale is actually rather exceptional. In short, endings, apparently. Which is funny because when I think Zelda, endings don't really have a lot to do with my love for the series.
Bonus Question: Is there a video game character youre a fan of for reasons other than video games?
I... don't think so, actually.
Bonus Question: What is your favorite instance of getting to play as the bad guy in a game?
I always get a quick thrill from having Seymour in my party for a single boss fight in FFX. Delita isn't exactly a villain but he's definitely rather clashing with my beliefs and puts Ramza in all kinds of danger, so playing as him in a couple of fights on the PSP version is exciting.
What is your favorite instance of getting to play as the bad guy in a game?
Breath of Fire: Dragon Quarter spoilers: playing as Bosch in the first section of the game. He's much stronger and more competent than the protagonist, and you need to rely on him to survive. Unfortunately, the budding friendship is cut short by events, and when you meet him again, you're a fugitive.

Is there a video game character youre a fan of for reasons other than video games?
Yes, mostly because of doujins. They shall remain nameless.
Don't look at me like that >_>
What is your favorite instance of getting to play as the bad guy in a game?
Wild Arms 2's and infinite Space's was way too short... so I'm gonna go with Breath of Fire IV. That was freakin' awesome. Bowser's Inside Story was fantastic as well.
EDIT: NO WAIT SCREW THE REST! Heroes of Might and Magic 3 Shadow of Death. Aww yeah playing as Sandro.

Although it's only a spoiler if you don't want to know what you get for collecting all the stars in the game! If you don't care about that, then read on!
30. Super Mario Galaxy 2 Grandmaster Galaxy
As many of you know, I am not a completionist when it comes to video games. If you want me to do everything your game has to offer, you had better make it enjoyable, and the payoff needs to be worth the effort. Super Mario Galaxy 2 provides a good example of how to do it right. This game features 240 stars across all of its worlds, twice as many as any other 3-D Mario game. After youve collected 120 normal stars, the game spreads 120 more Green Stars across the worlds for you to collect. These Green Stars dont make up new levels, but rather are strewn about in currently existing levels in often difficult to reach places. I remember a few where you pretty much had to triple jump and spin in order to reach them, and they were located in those areas with the platforms that shift every time you spin, so it was pretty tricky.
Anyway, this isnt about the Green Stars. Im just setting the stage for the real story. Once you manage to collect all 120 normal stars and all 120 Green Stars, you unlock the final galaxy, the Grandmaster Galaxy. This galaxy puts a great many of your Mario Galaxy skills to the test. The link I provided tells the tale a lot better than I could describe it myself. But as a lover of platformers, this level is excellently designed, provides a good challenge, and is a proper reward for collecting all of the stars throughout the game. It took me quite a few tries to beat this level, but it was so much fun.
But that wasnt all! In every galaxy, the game throws a special challenge at you, which varies from galaxy to galaxy. In some, its Collect the star within the time limit, while in others, enemies move much faster. Well, the Grandmaster Galaxy decided to throw down the gauntlet and make it so that you only have one thing of health. Thats right, one hit and youre dead, and there are no checkpoints, so you start all over from the beginning. Appropriately titled The Perfect Run, this is the pinnacle of 3-D Mario platforming. Now Im not saying its necessarily my favorite Mario level or anything, but I do like it quite a bit since its on this list and all. However, if youre a fan of 3-D platforming at all, this level is for you. Youll relish a challenge like this.
Now Im not making myself out to be some platforming savant or anything, but this one took me quite a while to beat. I didnt keep track of the exact number of attempts, but I remember deciding to take a break after a string of failures. Then when I came back, I beat it on the very next try. It was pretty amazing. The hardest parts of the Perfect Run for me were the part with the robot thing that shoots out the red laser rings around the platforms that shift when you spin, and then the very end with all the Hammer Bros. and the Boomerang Bros. Its pretty crazy trying to avoid all of the projectiles, especially when you have to beat the Boomerang Bros. to advance to the end of the level, and you have hammers flying at you from offscreen (because its too risky to try to beat all the Hammer Bros. before you get there). But man, is it satisfying when you finally do it.
Bonus Question: What is your favorite completionist reward in a game?
I guess I should put this in spoilers since you did.
Yeah Grandmaster Galaxy is amazing. Nothing much more to say about it. I would like to see it be expanded upon to entire world of it, akin to the Extra world of SMW.
3D Land has an equally satisfying final bonus level.
Probably the Chrono Cross thing everyone's talkin about-- the part when the moment starts is amazing.
And lol playing completionist. Though I guess out of the things that I just happened to complete it'd be the Gift mode of Lufia 2. Not technically a "completionist" reward but you do have to beat the game twice to get it so.
Oh and not to try and hijack the topic or anything but I'm tearing through Chrono Trigger now. It's strange because while I remember everything I felt a lot of things were a lot later in the game than they were-- like Magus's Castle and Tyran Castle. Like I got to both of these at < 10 hours into the game. Granted some of that might be knowing where to go but jeez. The former especially is some pretty awesome stuff to have so early. Really well setup dungeon-- feels bigger thann it is.
And I have to admit the DS translation is helping Frog a lot. Also Marle too who doesn't seem nearly as annoying as I remember her-- not sure if that's just me being more tolerant or whether the writing for her character changed though to be fair. Actually spreading my party out a lot more than I used to due to Marle/Ayla/Frog not really annoying me this time. Maybe it's NOSTALGIA, though.

29. Protoman (Mega Man) Quote: Robots are machines that follow orders. Im a machine that doesnt, so what does that make me?
Heres another character I like primarily because hes just really cool. Protoman is so cool that underneath his shades is, in fact, another pair of shades (and Im not even joking either! Theres official art of Protoman without his helmet on, and hes wearing another pair of sunglasses!). Also, Im pretty weird when it comes to spelling his name. I spell it as one word because I think Proto Man looks dumb, but I take the opposite stance when it comes to Mega Man because I think Megaman looks dumb. Same with most Robot Masters. Like with most things, Protoman marches to the beat of a different drum (or the tune of a different whistle or something, I dunno).
Anyway, Protoman has a really awesome design. I love the red, the shades, the scarf, the shield, all of it. The whistle is cool, too. He has this aura of mystery that I like, too. He doesnt show up often, but when he does, its usually in the nick of time to help out when needed or to give Mega Man some helpful advice. He also gives you his Proto Shield in MM7 if you can beat him, which is neat. I need to get MM9 and 10 one of these days so I can me some playable Protoman though.
Protoman has a pretty cool backstory, too, even if Mega Man as a whole isnt big on plot. He was designed by Dr. Light to be completely independent and capable of making his own decisions, but there was some sort of malfunction that would eventually kill him unless corrected. However, Protoman grew to distrust Dr. Light and refused to have the problem repaired so he could maintain his independence. Thats part of the reason why hes such a lone wolf. But refusing to have a fatal malfunction repaired so you can retain what makes you unique among your kind? What a boss. So cool.
I also did like Protoman a lot in the old Mega Man cartoon, even if he plays a completely different role in it. But he trolls Mega Man so hard, its hilarious. The voice definitely helps that trolling persona, too. Ha, I knew youd risk yourself for Mr. Lincoln! So good. Its kinda weird liking a character for two totally different reasons because, name and design aside, they might as well be separate characters, but hey, Protomans cool enough to pull that off.
Bonus Question: Which video game character has your favorite design?
I'm actually currently playing 3D Land, slowly but surely. I'm enjoying it quite a bit so far. Great first 3DS experience. Mostly I'm consumed by Dragon Quest V though. And Mother 3.
Yeah, I had a similar reaction to Marle on the DS for some reason. I don't think they changed much at all with her though. I think we're just more tolerant now.
When I got the 108 stars in Suikoden 1 and 2 last year I felt boss as f***, that's for sure. Oh, and unlocking Stealth and Bandanna in MGS is glorious.
Bonus Question: What is your favorite completionist reward in a game?
Hmm. I'm not sure if this counts but one of the Hadouken/Shoryuken gigs from the X series is on the short list for sure. I'm not even a fan of the Street Fighter franchise or anything but that attack is slick.
Bonus Question: Which video game character has your favorite design?
Cloud, Squall, Vivi, Yuna, Auron, Garrus, Wrex, Legion and Thane.
Man I thought Protoman's name was officially spelt Protoman. Anyway I agree with you that Proto Man looks dumb, and much like certain other characters I will continue to spell it Protoman while saying it's correct.
Also that Mega Man cartoon was so goofy. I liked it though and it was probably mostly for Protoman, but I agree with you that Protoman (and Mega Man/Rush/Roll for that matter) was totally different than the games' representation than them.
Bonus Q: Kirby, though for completely different reasons than one would like Protoman, obviously. If we change the criteria for my favorite badass design it's Dante or Sephiroth. Protoman's certainly in contention, though. Shadez and reppin da scarf like a champ.

From: Jeff Zero | #336 Yeah, I had a similar reaction to Marle on the DS for some reason. I don't think they changed much at all with her though. I think we're just more tolerant now.
Might be. Maybe it's cause there are characters that are so much better at being annoying than Marle is these days. I don't think I'm more tolerant towards bad characters in general, though. I've played games in the last year that had me facepalming over certain characters-- and I've replayed RPGs in the last few years like FFX-2 (failed yes I get it Leonhart go away damn you) and FFVIII and the characters were still just as terrible as I remember.
Not that I'm a Marle fan or anything now but tolerance is a wonderful thing considering CT doesn't have many great characters to help take your focus
