Come along for a magical ride of heartbreak and sorrow (or if you happened to play my teams, great triumph!) as I count down my biggest losses in sports.

In this list you'll find
9 Championship game or series losses
1 famous bowl lost

All of these except for 1 take place after what people would consider my only real championship, OU winning the National Championship in football at the beginning of 2001 against Florida St. OU softball also won a title that previous summer, and I count that, and softball will be making an appearance on this list.

First writeup later tonight!

Mine is easily the Panthers losing to the Patriots, but if it were in list format...

1) Patriots > Panthers
2) Red Wings > Penguins in 08
3) Red Wings > Hurricanes in 02

14) Kansas City Chiefs vs Baltimore Ravens, 2011 Wild Card Playoffs
Ravens win 30-7
Recap and boxscore - http://espn.go.com/nfl/recap?gameId=310109012
Highlights - http://www.nfl.com/videos/nfl-game-highlights/09000d5d81d92589/Wild-card-Playoffs-Ravens-vs-Chiefs-highlights

So, this one making my list might raise a few eyebrows, as mostly everyone assumed the Ravens would win, and probably pretty easily. But this one has special enough circumstances to make the list. As you may or may not know, the Chiefs won Super Bowl IV, and have been pretty mediocre ever since. Their only real success came in the early 90s, when we landed Joe Montana and he led us to the AFC Championship in 1994. That win in the divisional round (against the Oilers) is the last time the Chiefs won a playoff game. Since I was 4 at the time, I have no memory of this.

Flash forward to 2011, me and my brother are excited after clinching the division, and get the "great" idea of going to the game. $260 later, we embark on the road to KC. This is the only time I'm ever at a postseason game for one of my favorite teams, so that is why this makes the list.

First note, seeing a flyover in person is pretty cool

Second note, our only score of the game(that did put us up on top) was Charles 41 yard TD run, was right at us (seats about 20 rows up in the lower corner of the end zone) and at that moment I thought we had a real shot at it. As the list goes on, that is the truly great part of these terrible losses, the belief of winning

Then we get killed the rest of the game, Cassel suchs, blablabla, and although it was great to be at the newly renovated Arrowhead and bought some stuff (Berry jersey and Moeaki shirt, which adds a little to the "hilarity" of next season), it was a semi depressing 8 hour drive back

Whats your most depressing sporting event that you witnessed live?

I've only been to one major sporting event and that was watching UNC beat Hampton in 2000. So...

I guess when my high school varsity team goes 8-3 in my senior year, and in the first game of the playoffs, gets trounced by an 11 seed by at least 20 points.

Most hilarious moment: I remember back in middle school watching the basketball games, and one girl on my school's team shot a basket into the wrong goal. Not accidentally like Tyler Zeller did against Duke and Kansas, I'm talking full-on clearly-could-see-where-she's-aiming shot.

The first Packers game I went to see live (I live in Maryland so it isn't easy) was at the Ravens on MNF

They lost 48-7 or something like that and it couldn't have been warmer than 20 degrees

Bonus writeup for tonight, since this is the one the fewest people will care about (will aim for 1-2 write-ups a day)

Putting up 1 more writeup for tonight, since this is the one the least amount of people will care about

13) Oklahoma vs UConn, 2002 Women's Basketball National Championship
Huskies win 82-70
Recap and boxscore - http://fs.ncaa.org/Docs/stats/winter_champs_records/2002/w-basketball2.pdf (not having much luck on this matter)
Highlights (best I could find quickly)

So as you may or may not know, I actually watch a few women's sports. Typically only when OU is involved, but I tend to watch a few tournament games every year, and try to read up on it during the season so I can win the yearly women's bracket pool against TIDQ and Jag. OU's team had slowly progressed from being dead for a few days in the 90s, to the Sweet 16 the previous year I think after beating Purdue at Purdue, back when top 4 seeds were awarded home games the first two rounds. Well this year was OU's best team ever, led by Canadian Stacey Dales. OU marched through their region, and handled fellow 1 seed Duke in the Final Four

But as many stories involving women's basketball, dreams were soon dashed at the hands of an undefeated UConn team. UConn had numerous turnovers, and I don't really have a strong memory of the game, but I'm pretty sure UConn led by 10 the entire way.

Still this makes the list as it was actually my first Championship loss, and I do enjoy watching our women play.
Probably the most painful fact is that we ran into probably the greatest team ever. UConn would have 4 players taken in the first 6 of that year's WNBA draft. But OU had 3 taken in the first round (16 picks). This OU team would have won a championship if it had the fortune of happening in another year, but to be the best, ya gotta beat the best.

I honestly think the only people who have more of a right to complain are Buffalo fans born before 1985. All they have are the Bills (lost 4 Superbowls in a row, one on a missed FG), the Sabres (lost I think 2 or 3 Stanley Cups in my lifetime, including one on a BS phantom goal), and the Buffalo Braves (aka the LA Clippers, aka literally the least successful franchise in sports history).

Lets go ahead and get the final "minor" sport one out of the way

12) Oklahoma vs Alabama, 2012 Women's College World Series Championship Series
Bama wins 2 games to 1
Recap and boxscore -http://www.soonersports.com/sports/w-softbl/recaps/060712aaa.html
Highlights -http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RwPrQusnG2

To be honest, this should probably rank a bit better, but I just can't put softball above the rest on the list. This one is pretty special though. I try to watch OU softball whenever they are on but usually on end up watching in the postseason. I do usually know who mostly everyone on the team is and I knew this year's team was good. OU ran through regionals and supers, even beating Arizona along the way. We also went undefeated in our mini bracket in the WCWS to get to the finals. After winning game 1, me and my dad would "famously" predict to our friends that there was absolutely no way we would lose the next 2 games, that we were just so much better than everyone else.

This gets on the list for 2 reasons. One, it really sucks to lose a title in your backyard, and two, I can't imagine a more embarrassing way to lose. If you remember, this Game 3 started with a rain delay, which was actually convenient for me, since Game 6 of the Thunder-Spurs series was that same night. When they finally started the game, we jumped out to a 3-0 lead. Then in the 4th it started to rain again. Bama was able to get out of the top of the inning, and then the trouble started. Player of the year Keilani Ricketts had trouble gripping the ball, throwing 3 wild pitches.

At this point the embarrassment starts. Our Manager, Patty Gasso, comes out to complain about the conditions and convinces the umps to delay the game for 13 minutes. During this time the OU team stayed in the dug out, pretty much huddled together doing nothing. Meanwhile, the Bama players were standing out in the rain, leading the crowd in chants. We looked as weak as I've ever seen a team look, and it was super obvious what would happen next. Bama scores 4 in the inning and goes onto win 5-4

We were the better team, but we had the much weaker will. I still believe if we hadn't started complaining and didn't create the delay by whining and moaning, we would have won the game. But, I guess you need the will of a champion to not let some rain bother you.

Yankees/Red Sox 2004 ALCS

Actually, that is probably my #1 answer for everything. Lost to our worst enemy, lost after leading 3-0, lost after having the best team. The only thing that compares was the 2001 World Series, but that was only because of 9/11 and stuff.

2005 NBA Finals. I don't normally watch basketball, but the Pistons were defending champs and played a defensive game which made things a bit more interesting for me to watch. One of the games, Robert Horry hit a last second shot to win and that specific loss was the worst one.

The 2009 Stanley Cup finals come to mind when the Red Wings were up 3-2 but then lost the next two games, both by just a goal. They had beat the Penguins the previous year and seemed set to do it again coming in.

Probably the NFC Championship game between the Packers and Giants

After seeing us dismantle the Seahawks like we did, and then it would be the first loss we ever suffered at Lambeau in a Championship game, not to mention in OT.

Same as SephG's answer. Except we didn't have the better team that year. Going into the series, I was actually dreading a Boston demolition of us. But when we got to 3-0, I never imagined in my wildest nightmares that we'd cough it up like that.

Tie between...
- Dallas vs. New York Giants in the 2007-08 playoffs. Cowboys finish off their best regular season ever and then lose their first game to the Giants, who eventually win the SuperBowl
and
- UNC vs. Duke in February of this year. We blow two double digit leads and the refs fail to notice Seth Curry traveling when he sinks one of Duke's major 3-pointers in the final two minutes of the game.

Honorable Mentions

Just to get these out of the way...
1)2001-2004 WCWS. Fun that we went 5 straight years, but we never came close to matching 2000
2)2010 CWS. Until a couple days ago, we were the last team to have beaten South Carolina in postseason play
3)2009-2010 Women's Final Four. We should have done better with the Paris Twins, and should have gotten to the Finals that year. The next year was a complete surprise so no heartbreak there
4)The OU bowl losses not on this list, which would be Mississippi St and West Virginia.
Eh
5)Mavs-Warriors 07. This probably deserves to be on the list, but I'm pretty level-headed on this one. This is also a spoiler for later on the list

I believe it was 2008, but the Dodgers were easily winning the NL East and they were playing the DBacks. I went to all 3 games and we won the first 2 games and made an epic comeback in one of them.

So I go to the third game all decked out in DBacks gear and I brought a broom and we got humiliated. The PITCHER was a triple away from a cycle.

11) Oklahoma vs Vacated, 2005 Orange Bowl
Vacated wins 55-19
Recap and boxscore - http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2005/football/ncaa/specials/bowls/2004/01/04/orange.bowl/index.html (lol old si.com)
Highlights

This was going to be the greatest game I ever watched. Two teams who had steamrolled through the regular season, and were clearly the two best teams in the country (hi aub), were going to duke it out in what was sure to be another classic Orange Bowl. 4 of the 5 Heisman finalists would be there, OU with Adrian "All Day" Peterson and former Heisman winner Jason "No Knees" White, Vacated with future NFL stud and Heisman winner Matt Leinart and one of the greatest running backs of all time, Vacated.

And hey, OU scored the first TD of the game. And then we were outscored 55-12 the rest of the way.

Whoops.

Now Im pretty sure people will agree that OU wasn't 55-19 bad, but Vacated was the better team. And if you look it up, Vacated has a pretty good record! This one (obviously since I'm ranking them) bothers me the least of our BCS title losses, but it did suck pretty bad for a couple of days.

FUN FACTS
Lets all watch Ashlee Simpson get booed again

The previous year, OU had a top 3 kicker. In this season, he was so bad that we pulled the redshirt of our freshman kicker, and had him kick the final 3 games. His only field goal attempt was in the Orange Bowl itself, a successful 29 yarder! That kicker was Garrett Hartley, while often injured or drugged up in the pros, was a key part of the Saints Super Bowl win, becoming the first kicker in Super Bowl history to hit three 40 yard field goals, and if he had been the kicker on the onside kick to start the 2nd half, I think I could have argued pretty passionately that he should have been MVP!

I actually haven't gone to many live sporting events, and I certainly haven't been to one where there was a lot at stake, like a playoff game or something. I did see the Braves get killed like 17-0 against the Expos once, so I guess that.

Most depressing or crushing loss in a sport you don't usually care about?

When the Ducks lost Game 7 of the Stanley Cup to the Devils back in 2002-2003. Giguere was so awesome that postseason that he actually got me following Anaheim that year in the playoffs and rooting for him to pull it off. They ended up winning the Cup a few years after that, so I guess it was okay.

Worst loss in a game or series you were 100% sure you were going to win?

I dunno, I'm one of those sports fans who tries to convince himself to take nothing for granted, even when the opponent seems easy. I suppose the closest thing I can think of is when Tennessee lost their homecoming game to Wyoming a few years back, which essentially sealed Fulmer's fate as coach, because seriously, who loses to Wyoming? Apparently, we do.

Biggest blowout loss in a game you were super hyped up for?

Haha, lots of Tennessee/Florida games fall under this category, especially in the '90s. Probably Peyton Manning's last game as a Vol against Nebraska in '97 as well.

Bonus Question
Biggest blowout loss in a game you were super hyped up for?

UNC/Kansas in the 2008 NCAA Men's Final Four. Had we won that, we would have steamrolled over Memphis in the finals and won back-to-back with our 09 title >_>

Hey cool!

Whats your most depressing sporting event that you witnessed live?

Two years ago, I went with my dad to a Beaver game for the first time in like ten years. They were playing Washington State. At home. Washington State was BY FAR the worst team in the Pac-10, and the Beavs were having a decent year to that point. The point-spread was like 24. Most people in the stands were discussing their plans to leave at halftime, presuming it would be a blowout. They not only ended up losing, but getting dominated. It was pretty pathetic.

Most depressing or crushing loss in a sport you don't usually care about?

This is kinda tough. I don't care about basketball NOW, so I'll go with that Game 7 against the Lakers that the Blazers were majorly up in and choked away. Can't recall the year. I cared at the time, but basketball is now the least relevant sport to me.

Worst loss in a game or series you were 100% sure you were going to win?

The 1998/99 Vikings in the NFCC against the Falcons. I was 13 at the time and still young enough to not be the cynical pessimist I am now. I was 100% sure they were going to win. Then Gary ****ing Anderson happened.

Biggest blowout loss in a game you were super hyped up for?

The 2008 Civil War. I don't want to talk about it.
