Currently at the bottom floor of the tank hangar. I'm absolutely horrible at the game but I'm still enjoying every minute of it otherwise. Definitely looking forward to the rest of the game (and series I guess).
Also, it seems that Snake and I think alike based on the briefings. Nice.
The series follows inverse Star Trek film logic in terms of game quality (which is to say, the odd numbered ones are the good ones, as opposed to Star Trek where it's even). Especially if we count Peace Walker as MGS5.
MGS3 is one of the best games ever made. Enjoy.

If you count PW as MGS5, which by the way it's not but if you do, then don't you have to count PO as MGS4 and MGS4 becomes MGS5?

MGS2 and MGS4 are better than the bulk of the odd-numbered Trek films, and Trek XI is actually pretty good and finally broke that line for me.

If you count PW as MGS5, which by the way it's not but if you do, then don't you have to count PO as MGS4 and MGS4 becomes MGS5? Kojima's literally said Peace Walker is MGS5 'in his heart', so the fans tend to roll with that. That said, since it sounds at least for now like there's a literal 'MGS5' in development, that's going to end superseding even Kojima-speak eventually.

Peace Walker happens right after Portable Ops. PO is given one line in the beginning of PW to the effect of "Let's try to forget about all that" and then never referenced again

From: pjbasis | #011 Does PW blatantly contradict PO?
Or do you mean PO just kinda does nothing in the long run? Because it kinda did nothing from the start.
There's a whopping one line in Peace Walker that ever remotely references PO in any way, shape or form, and it's literally an insult and happens five minutes into the game. Miller tells BB "we can finally leave all that San Hieronymo crap behind us" and that's it. And since Kojima stated several times he was well aware of 'tepid fan feedback concerning the narrative of Portable Ops', I'd call it a safe bet given his sense of humor he was just middle-fingering a game he did nothing but help produce.

pretty sure po is canon. nothing in the other games contradicts it and it fills in one very important spoiler part of the story. it should be played between 3 & 4

It was to the point where the working title for Peace Walker was literally Metal Gear Solid 5. Also, Portable Ops wasn't even overseen by Kojima. It is in canon, but the only references to it are a very obscure piece of data in MGS4 that retcons a massive plot hole Portable Ops makes, and a line in Peace Walker telling you to forget about the events of Portable Ops. It's not part of the main series. Peace Walker is.

You really just need to be aware of MG1 and 2. If I recall, the manual for MGS even included a plot sumarry, with a handy retcon for 2.
Also, I highly doubt MGS5 will be called MGS5 but we'll see. I think the series should have dropped numbers after two, as all series pretty much have to do it eventually, for their own good.

well, ideally mg1&2 are played before mgs, since they add some nice subtext you are supposed to have going into mgs.
I don't know man, the games are fun enough to play, but I think the story of MG1&2 is best left imagined as referenced by the series.
Also it forms a plot hole when
Big Boss does not ever mention being Snake's father, yet MGS1 makes it seem like he told him during MG2. Gray Fox's betrayal is also kind of baseless and silly in hindsight
I watched GT's retrospective of the series a few weeks back to get hyped up for this series (although I ended up taking a detour to Ico and Shadow of the Colossus first), and from what I've seen of the first two Metal Gears, the switch to 3D seems to have done quite a lot for this series in spite of the gameplay still remaining 2D in essence.
Plus I've heard that Metal Gear 1 & 2 had much more shallow characters, story, and gameplay in comparison to the MGS series. I'll get the HD collection after beating MGS1 and at that point, the option to play through those and Peace Walker opens up. For now, I only planned on playing through the core 4 entries in the series.
...okay, as for MGS1, I actually sometimes (very, VERY occasionally) find some of the game's shifting camera angles to be a bit confusing. There was this one time where I pressed down on the control pad (for lack of a better term) to sidle against a wall, which brought the game into a camera angle where it looked odd that I had to press down (instead of up) in order to keep Snake's back against the wall. That was the only time this silliness happened though, and I'd much rather the game shift camera angles than not (again, one of the major reasons for how the move to 3D helped out this series in spite of the gameplay remaining 2D).
Also, there was another time where I died because Snake put his back against a wall when I didn't mean to do so and there were two guards attacking me. But then again, I know that I shouldn't be getting into situations like that!
I picked up some chaff grenades and a socom earlier but can't seem to use them. Not sure what happened.
On a side note, I've watched an LP of MGS1 before, but that was 2.5 years ago. Never watched an LP of any other game in the series, thankfully.
And yes I did recognize the main Shadow Moses gate (and the area's music!) from the MGS-themed Brawl stage. Brawl pretty much recreated it to a T other than those tall walls.
It's possible you might prefer Twin Snakes, the remake of MGS on Gamecube. I know I do. Not everybody does of course, but for somebody new to the series I especially think you might dig it more.
And hell yeah, it only gets better, the series is freakin awesome. Best.

4 is like twenty times better than PW and its awful mech boss battles....
I didn't like what I saw of The Twin Snakes in that retrospective. Too much action in the cutscenes, and the dialogue rubbed me the wrong way there. Plus, do we really need MGS2's gameplay enhancements in MGS1? I'll consider The Twin Snakes anyway since I can play GameCube games on my Wii.
Okay, so that's four more games in the MGS series to consider. Tentative order is 1 -> 2 -> 3 -> 4 -> Peace Walker -> MSX games -> The Twin Snakes
In unrelated news, I also have a desire to replay Final Fantasy VI, Super Metroid, and Ocarina of Time soon, but they don't take priority over Snake's adventures for now! Also considering blind playthroughs of Mega Man X and Portal 2.

It's Lightning Strikes. His Metal Gear-related posts should not be taken very seriously.

Twin Snakes' action is indeed hammy, and the MGS2 mechanics can make some of the sections a lot easier than they are in MGS.
Which is too bad, because otherwise it's great. The graphics are awesome, the voice acting is a VAST improvement (at least in my opinion; people argue with said position), and while the gameplay doesn't fit the setting as mentioned in some spots it's still that great MGS2 gameplay that in other areas works just as well as it did in MGS2.

I found out how to use Snake's weapons, and managed to max out pistol ammo, chaff grenades, and rations. Otherwise, I'm stuck! Some help would be nice.
Do I need to find a key to access the DARPA Chief's room?
Twin Snakes does a hell of a lot of things totally wrong.
It's a good game because it can't help but be one - the original content is so good. But it messes a lot of things up - the gameplay doesn't translate too well, the cutscenes are dumb, etc.

no. you need to find a different way into his cell.
Hmmm...and Col. Campbell stated that the DARPA Chief is now on the first floor...
I swear I've looked everywhere and in every nook and cranny of where I've been able to progress so far, but I wouldn't be surprised if I haven't. From what I recollect of the LP I watched of this game almost 3 years ago, there is supposed to be a vent leading into his cell, but my memory could be pretty foggy.
And I suck at combat, but then again I'm supposed to avoid it anyway. This is my first stealth game, to be fair.
