there are a riduculous amount of games coming out soon. many of them are huge. let's get down to business

Next Week!

Night in the Woods: your favourite antifa adventure game is finally coming out! Would a cat punch a nazi? I think so.
Hollow Knight: so there's this indie Metroidvania game with lush art, and... wait, wait, come back! I know this isn't exactly an exciting concept, because there's about a dozen of these a year, but the polish behind this one is impressive. The character movement, 2D art, and mechanics remind me a lot of Ori. That's good company to be in.

This month!

Horizon: Zero Dawn: the next big Sony exclusive is almost here. Guerrilla Games always produce incredible visuals, but their games tend to be shallow. Hopefully there's enough interesting content in this open world to explore, otherwise it might be overshadowed by a similar game out shortly after...
Torment: Tides of Numenera: the spiritual successor to the greatest cRPG ever. Unfortunately it's made by modern inXile, so the jury is still out on this one.
River City Ransom: Underground: hi theo

Next month!

The Nintendo Switch + Zelda: Breath of the Wild: it's the Zelda game people have been asking for since the fandom grew tired of the OoT formula. It takes as much from modern game design as it does from Zelda 1. Nintendo are so confident in it that they feel comfortable launching a system months in advance to hit their annual financial targets won't come back to haunt them. This is the biggest, most-hyped Zelda game in a decade. Let's hope it's good. Oh right, and there are like a million games in 1-2 Switch that make it look like you're masturbating.
NieR: Automata: it's hard to process this, even still. The original Nier was a special game with a story that leveraged the medium it was told in to tell a uniquely engaging tale. It was progressive and risky and soulful. That's not something you typically see out of Square these days. It also bombed, so it's surprising - to say the least - that not only are we getting a follow-up with all the critical components from the first game working together again, but also that the main criticism of the first game, its gameplay, has been addressed by bringing Platinum Games on board. How does this happen? So bizarre.
Mass Effect: Andromeda: both Sony and Nintendo are releasing much-hyped open-world RPGs in the weeks before this, so it kinda feels like EA are releasing this in a climate that, if it's not hostile, might be apathetic. Which might be for the best after the hype cycle between Mass Effect 2 and 3. Come in with low expectations and blow everybody away, if Bioware are still capable of that.

The Future!

hi you have like 6 weeks to finish all this before Persona 5, good luck.

Yeah, I suspect Zelda, Mass Effect and Persona are the three that will make it out of that alive and in my collection.

Feel bad about most likely skipping Nier, but that should be a cheap pickup a few months down the line.

For Honor and Ghost Recon: Wildlands are two games I'll be getting for sure not on your list. I'm way more excited for Horizon, though.

I beat Nioh yesterday. It's probably the best Souls game imo.

There's also Hacknet DLC in March and that Kingdom Hearts collection. I fell in love with Nier when I played it last month and am hoping somehow the Black Box Edition of the new one comes back in stock.

my guess is that it's not a sequel and was sandwiched in between a bunch of games people here care more about. the two reasons I haven't bought it are that I don't have the time and I'm still not sure if the things I'll love about it will outweigh the things I'll hate about it.

Quick thing: Nier sold overall poorly in the states, but it had decent legs thanks to word-of-mouth and it actually sold pretty well in Japan. The game was made on a shoestring budget (all of Yoko Taro's games before Automata were) so it didn't need much to succeed.

i think loot, as opposed to authored drops, is antithetical to encounter design in these type of games. it gives up a degree of control over balance and builds. what i want most out of these games is the belief that they're fair. i want to know that going into an area or a boss that i have been given all the tools to succeed, and it's up to me to put them to use. i don't want to be subject to bad rolls. i don't want to re-enter areas and grind for a katana or glove with just the right stats or skills. i understand that nioh mitigates this to a certain degree with the limited number of weapons (with stances representing big changes in how weapons feel) and how loot feeds into the upgrade system, but then i'm just left wondering why these systems are even in there. authored drops also give other advantages like telegraphing certain challenges or providing environmental storytelling, but if nioh doesn't want to engage with that i'm okay.

i also think bosses have way too much health. the from games suffered from this in the ds2 dlc and parts of ds3 as well, although it was mostly with big, bulky enemies. there's a line between a sense of accomplishment and exhaustion, and from what i played and have watched, nioh crosses it. i think this is a frustrating way to increase difficulty.

keep in mind that a lot of what i see about this game is really exciting, and reminds me a lot of what i love about ngb and demon's souls, and i almost bought it over the weekend, only to be stopped by stupid things like 'store not having stock'

transcience posted...
sorry friend, I'm going all in here!

okay, so when I am talking about "the biggest, most-hyped Zelda game in a decade," the comparison I want to make is to Twilight Princess. I want that game in your mind. why? because that game was huge. it was a game built on hype. it was long in development and straddled two generations. when it released it crushed the internet. i am not sidestepping the comparison. the entire point of alluding to it and contextualizing BotW's release within a similar framework is to say, "hey, remember that? this is like that." you can't see the forest for the trees, which is another rhetorical phrase.

i'ma respond to this but because i'm known for being particularly argumentative i wanna make it clear right now that i'm not and am super interested in this conversation, so yeah no negativity in my tone here

yeah but the loot doesn't actually matter that much. it makes you feel good because you got a new, better thing, but you'll never, ever feel like you got a "bad drop." Loot is a thing you worry about in the menu between missions. It doesn't have a major impact on your fight with the boss. Bad rolls are absolutely not a thing at all. Grinding for a better drop is not a thing at all. And the blacksmith can create basically anything you want at any time for limited resources.

I accidentally lost my helmet and was bummed about it because it had plus life and plus luck and looked neat. But instead I just went to my inventory, found the best helmet I got from my last run, went to the blacksmith and refashioned it to look like my other one and rerolled twice (i had resources at this point to reroll like a thousand times) to get the two stats i wanted, stats that i never noticed making a real difference anyway.

like i can see where the loot looks like it might make a big difference. obviously you want the good thing. but there definitely is nothing like what you're describing. it looks a lot like diablo and destiny on its face from that front but it's absolutely not that at all.

Bosses have a lot of health but a lot of that is based on the fact that you should be using items, magic or ninjitsu to mitigate them with type advantages -- like fire for x element, etc. But it is a complaint I have as well. Bosses have way too much health.

so i think right now you can only launch a mission from the hub in co-op if you've beaten the mission. you can still summon people at shrines regardless but i think that's what people are talking about. AKA you cannot play the game in full from start to finish in co-op like some people thought

but they might change that? i dunno it's weird. i summoned a few people for boss fights because i always feel like that's fun and that worked well
