shovel knight is probably my favorite 2d platformer.

Hollow Knight is really fun, really great. I really enjoy it.

But there are some pretty serious performance issues. Frame stuttering and FPS drops that result in input lag and dropped inputs. It's too cool a game to play like that. Devs are working on optimization patch. Will update when that's out.

- game focuses so hard on instant death traps, even more than mega man. it's a cheap and lazy approach to difficulty. you almost never die from actual enemies and I often just tanked the damage because that wasn't ever what I was worried about.
- magic completely nerfs the game's difficulty. every boss goes down with a yawn with the exception of the very end which I thought was very good

I disagree with both these points. I don't feel like the game has unfair traps. It's a 2D platformer and it uses the verb set of that genre. Each platforming section is a unique encounter that can be overcome with patience. There are also relics and armour that prevent knock back and damage if a particular enemy placement troubles you. I never felt frustrated by a death; it was always my fault.

Except for the silhouette level. It's also unclear how close you can safely be near spikes. Those suck.

As for magic, you can always not use it. If I find the path of least resistance tedious I always find ways to make it more engaging. In Shovel Knight, the game actively encourages you to experiment and find your own balance.

I'm probably holding out for the Switch version too. The kids got really into Ori. Sounds like it's a ways off but I'm not at a loss for things to play.

The Hollow Knight performance issues seem like it doesn't matter the power of your PC. With my 970 I ran into the same exact issues at 4K resolution that I did at 1080. Devs are working on a fix though. Gosh it's really neat (AND CARRIES ON THE GRAND TRADITION OF GREAT GAMES WITH FAST TRAVEL SYSTEMS DESIGNED AROUND RIDING LARGE INSECTS) and I hope they fix it ASAP.

need to buy a game on my brother's PSN account with my card. he has three cards already, which is the max. so i try to add my paypal. it fails, and i get an email from paypal in spanish. i try again, and it fails, and i get another email from paypal in spanish. so eventually i get my brother to go on there and delete the card he doesn't use. then i have to reenter his password the next time i log on. then i add my card and ... it fails.

then i re-add my card and it fails. then i add my credit card instead and it fails. then i add it again and it fails. then i try adding my paypal from the computer and login to paypal and hit authorize and it fails.

sony really does not like my f***ing cards

bought two $50 digital delivery codes from newegg ... then saw that they can take like two days to process digital codes. so cancelled that order and bought them from cdkeys. finally was able to preorder horizon: zero dawn and to take advantage of the $15 on $100 thing i preordered kingdom hearts hd 1.5 + 2.5 or whatever the hell they're calling it

It's not too long by cRPG standards. I've seen claims of 25-30 hours.

sampled bass in the soundtrack as all great Sunsoft games had. Pretty environment design (one of the primary weaknesses of Blaster Master Overdrive). Still incorporating the plot goofiness of Fred the frog (and in one of the trailers I also saw they're still incorporating Eve, the character made up in the Worlds of Power novelization that was made canon for the sequels). Adding lots of new stuff while still embracing memorable parts of level design and enemies, much like Bionic Commando Rearmed. That chain lightning gun seems really fun to use.

yeah people have been raving about the import version. it's great in all the ways you expect and delivers on Platinum's pedigree. Sounds like it did very well commercially as well. Second highest first week for a Platinum game; equalled Nier and Drakengard 3's first week combined.
