They did it for Gunmetal Arcadia Zero and Copoka at least.

well I guess I'm getting Horizon because I forgot I ordered it back in 2015 when Amazon deals were much better, and the price at launch is the price I'd consider buying in months later ($50 CAD, so ~$35 USD)

Can we add some days to March please

https://waypoint.vice.com/en_us/article/why-it-took-subset-games-so-long-to-make-a-game-after-ftl

Interesting article about some of the anxiety Subset Games feel when trying to follow up on FTL and the development process behind Into the Breach. Sounds like they're a couple of guys who know each other very well and have a method that works, and they're not ready to shake that up.

so the thing is

i didn't even know you could go to the church and visit her outside of the morning chats until i was about 90% of the way through the game. like, ever time i go up those stairs i'm using them to get on the lamp post and I didn't even think about it. and I was incredibly, incredibly thorough with the rest of the game and gettign all the secrets which REALLY UPSET ME. thankfully, I plan on replaying so I can see what all this mae's mom stuff is.

my favorite character is Angus because he's a big beautiful boy and dat ass of course.

edit: 11ish hours first playthrough btw, if anybody was wondering

i've done the thing where you save the last 10 minutes of video like 20 different times all to capture and eventually makes gifs of silly looping animations (gregg's arms and spoilers there may be some very funky dancing in your future)

from the outside, the campaign seemed to be very well run. Announcement with popular mainstream streamer, regular updates, a weekly podcast, campaign achievements that unlocked updates, etc. it was gamified to the nth degree all in the name of fostering a community and it worked.

- intelligent, modular approach to difficulty that allows the player to tune the game to their liking. destruction of checkpoints offer risk/reward, multiple types of ichor to help you in a variety of ways if you need it, relics are helpful but inessential, health/magic buffs are there if you need it
- each level presents a new set of challenges. new gimmicks are introduced consequence free at first but the difficulty quickly ramps up with a variety of different challenges, like enemy placement, silhouetted segments, or other obstructions.
- that adorable propeller rat
- incredible attention to detail for artwork, music, characters. everything is so charming. the way NPCs dance when they have something to tell you. the merchant is named Chester, and he goes out in the field to find hidden chests before you do to sell them at a marked up price. characters say just enough to impress upon you general traits, but can still surprise you when you revisit them in new campaigns, like Plague Knight's
- level design that encourages player experimentation. you are always rewarded for testing your ability to reach seemingly unreachable places, and that feels great.
- great challenge mode and in-game achievement tracking provide more reasons to explore the world after you beat it once.

the game is so dense and brimming with creativity. it does everything it sets out to do and in the process trumps its influences.

been a while, but

- game focuses so hard on instant death traps, even more than mega man. it's a cheap and lazy approach to difficulty. you almost never die from actual enemies and I often just tanked the damage because that wasn't ever what I was worried about.
- magic completely nerfs the game's difficulty. every boss goes down with a yawn with the exception of the very end which I thought was very good.
- I just never felt comfortable with the game's movement. this is more personal taste than something I think is just bad design.

shovel knight is another one of those games that i can see from a detached pov that it's a very well designed game with amazing production value but it just never clicked with me.

it's the weekend so after somehow bungling this week's hitman elusive target so hard for a reason i can't understand, i sunk about another 5 hours into dragon age inquisition. starting to get more party members now after doing most of the "sidequests" in the hinterlands. i like sera and vivienne from what i've seen of them so far, but i have a feeling sera grinds a lot of people's gears. her speech actually makes me pay attention because so far the game has been sorta plain in its dialogue. can't wait to get to iron bull (i can because oh right dark souls 2 restart day)
