The story is very incomplete, and no amount of patches can fix it. The gameplay is pretty dull in most respects. Combat has this really weird system where you just hold down buttons to auto-attack and auto-dodge. Nothing flinches when you hit it which is something I always hate in action games.

As an open world RPG, it's beautiful, but the sidequests are terrible. Why couldn't you be able to get quests from 10 people all active at the same time instead of 10 quests from 1 guy that you have to go back and forth to activate/complete? And they're mostly lame fetch quests. Even the hunts you inexplicably can only have 1 active at at time. You reach a new town and they'll have 6 or 7 hunts to do...but you have to keep going back and forth to do them 1 at a time? Xenoblade knew this 7 years ago that it's stupid as fuck.

There are some dungeons too, but they're almost all the same dark cavern environment. I enjoyed them mostly because dungeon diving and fighting bosses are the best part of the game, but it's Final Fantasy. They have so much imagery and aesthetics to draw from and they go with the same boring look for the most part. Which is doubly a shame because the overworld is so great looking, and the fun parts are terrible looking.

Phoenix Downs auto-revive you if you die so at the end of the day combat is about as interesting as Uncharted platforming. It just looks cool.

when i first tried it i was kind of shocked as to how bad it was, but i've warmed up to it. i had to let go of my expectations for an FF game

i'd put it in the deeply flawed, but maybe worth playing category

I'd put it below 6 through 10, but above the rest as an overall package. take note that i'm biased towards characters and story, and the cast in 15 feels like cardboard cutouts to me

I actually liked the cast, the party member banter succeeds in making it feel like a dudebro adventure just like advertised.

And the only parts of the story that felt good were the payoffs of conflict and resolution between them.

It did so much right (and some wrongs too) and I absolutely loved the first few chapters but then it went south as soon as it started hitting the linear chapters with its poor storytelling.

Still a great game but could have been one of the best FF games instead of merely a very good FF game. It was also my 2nd favorite game of 2016 tied with Uncharted 4 (Dark Souls III takes first place by quite a stretch). However the games released this year are making FFXV look kinda bad in comparison namely Persona 5, Nioh and what I've played of Zelda: BotW and NieR: Automata. I'd say even Resident Evil 7 is better. So 5 games this year have already outclassed FFXV.

This may just be evidence that this year has been an outstanding year for video games or that FFXV simply cannot hang with the very best out there despite being a very good game itself.

Alot of these criticisms are what I had to say at the end of FFXIII. I found it great until after the first Bathandulus battle and it went downhill from there.

The game is completely unbroken and unfinished. Unfortunately the story is the most unfinished part, which means you can't get into it at ALL, but the gameplay and main characters are pretty nice. There's a LOT of great and new ideas in the gameplay, and in the characterization.

You can't expect a finished game. It's like a slideshow of cool ideas. But I think it's worth the 30-40 hours to see what there is.

It's has the only party system that feels like a real group of people going around

And it has the only day/night system that actually feels like days and nights are passing

If not for the fast travel, it would probably have one of the strongest feelings of actually moving around a real world too (but thank god for the fast travel... and some chapters definitely have that feel anyways, 3 and 6 I think)

I just remembered how amazing chapter 6 is... like, they totally nailed it... only for 1 chapter, but they did

That's what also made the quest system so frustrating to me.

I want to go out and explore the world with lots of objectives, hitting my various destinations in one "trip." But it only ever encouraged fast traveling because otherwise you would be going back and forth from a hub to a quest constantly. It got super old.

Yes, very much like MGSV, except MGSV's story was just like the first 30%, while FFXV's is a random scattered 30%. Kinda like the endgame missions of MGSV that were just random short stories. XV actually has the ending though, and it's pretty good.

XV also has better gameplay and setpieces and writing and general stuff in the game. MGSV is mostly just a sandbox with systems you can play around in.

The gameplay loops in XV are just more interesting. MGSV's sandbox was pretty boring, every encounter is more or less the same. Plus XV has a lot of great charm and presentation, while MGSV is very bland. You need to REALLY love marking and fultoning dudes to have fun in MGSV for 40+ hours.

MGSV's main problem is that it doesn't feel like there's any ultimate purpose to what you're doing due to how threadbare its plot is. FFXV's plot might feel very incomplete itself, but there's at least an endgame to move toward. MGSV just...stops.

It is the reason I refuse to buy any AAA games on launch anymore.

They get content patched in and bug fixes to resolve terrible crashes, skittish framerate, among other things. If they can't make a finished, quality product at launch, then they don't deserve my money until it's fixed. Not only that, with all the DLC that comes out, a "Complete Edition" is always there in the future. Why am I going to get FFXV when I know they're going to be adding and completing the game later? I'll just wait for that version.

It's partly AAA's inflating budgets, but largely the open world design.

You just can't make an open world with finely crafted details like in a linear AAA game, even with 10 years and hundreds of millions of dollars. Not even Nintendo could do it - that should be the nail in the coffin for hyper-ambitious open world AAAs.
