FF6 is so overrated to me. Like, that game is defined by good moments such as the theater, the cliff and the final battle (mostly by atmosphere cause the actual battle sucks), but when it comes to the actual regular and boss battles, there's not much there, and the battle themes are a downgrade from what we had before.

The cast is huge, but only a few characters are actually important, and even then you're kinda left wanting, which is a shame for a story-driven FF, which up to this point were the even numbered ones.

I also never bothered to get all those gimmick rages.

Weird that Mass Effect 1's writeup says it's outclassed by both sequels and then doesn't include ME3, the best in the series

FF7 so low is really fucking shocking too. But cool.

Chrono Trigger is streamlined and well-paced but I don't think that makes a memorable game. This is going to sound overly harsh but to me CT feels like well-made RPG Maker game with a great soundtrack. It's fun while playing but it doesn't stick with you whatsoever after you finish. I think it's a lazy choice when there's a ton of RPGs that both aspire to be more and succeed at being more.

Well, I have to respectfully disagree with the not sticking part. Sometimes the less complex storylines and gameplay do more for me just by their overall execution. I've played about 90% of the games on this list and beaten at least half of them, and I can still go back to Chrono Trigger at any time and enjoy it a lot for what it is. I can't say the same about most of the others, but that's just me.

This being a list created by several people (many of which probably didn't play most of them themselves, a post by one of their writers on another forum even alludes to this) means that it was always destined to have issues and glaring omissions.

CT is mostly in the presentation, and presentation matters a lot more than most people are willing to admit

I do agree that the game mechanics are pretty shallow compared to a lot of RPGs but I think that only matters so much

and I'll laugh at anyone who says otherwise until they embrace FF5 at the GOAT FF

I think there's like kind of a backlash against talking about a game's 'graphics' just kinda based on the push from 2D to 3D games and the drive to have ever-nicer polygons in the 2000's but really, the way a game looks, sounds, and feels is like 90% of what a game is, otherwise you might as well be playing an excel spreadsheet. I still DO that - it's called pen and paper RPGs - but CT is definitely a GOAT candidate as far as the presentation aspect is concerned.

CT isn't my #1 RPG but it's certainly in my top 10 because of the simplicity, music, and charm. i'm not gonna knock anyone who takes any of my top 10 RPGs as #1, they're up there for damn good reason.

and lol at KOTOR at #14. fuck no. nowhere fucking close.

but LOL at Pokemon Yellow at #4. move over Legend of Dragoon's existence, THAT is the fucking joke.

Looking at what people said back when it came out it was a revolutionary RPG and was setting the bar for its day. It's the same as having something like EQ on the list, these days EQ is nowhere near as big of a deal as it was back in its heyday but it still matters historically.

It's a solid RPG and the main plot twist was mind blowing to quite a few. That plot twist I think helped catapult the game up a bit, it also had damn cool characters which helps a lot.

It also has some notoriety as the first RPG in the Star Wars universe really.

Beaten: Fable II, KH2, M&L:SS, Undertale, Tales of Vesperia, TWEWY, Xenoblade, Persona 3, Tales of Symphonia, FFIX, TTYD, Persona 4, WoW (meaning I got to max level at the time I played), Pokemon RBY, Chrono Trigger

Played a decent amount of but never beat: Disgaea, FFVII, Persona 5, FFIV

So that's 15 I've beaten, and an additional 4 that I've played a lot of but didn't finish.

Looks like I've played through about half the list. These are the ones I've only played a little bit or played too long ago to remember:

Betrayal at Krondor
Pillars of Eternity
Final Fantasy
Baldur's Gate
Bloodborne
Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn

Will probably pick BB back up at some point though. And this is how I'd rank the 50 I played through, from worst to best:

The World Ends With You
Fallout 2
Dark Souls
Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King
Fallout
Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga
Disgaea: Hour of Darkness
Secret of Mana
Breath of Fire III
Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch
Fable II
The Legend of Dragoon
Golden Sun
Suikoden II
Lunar: Silver Star Story
Final Fantasy IV
Valkyria Chronicles
Shadow Hearts: Covenant
Xenogears
Dragon Age: Origins
Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door
EarthBound
Undertale
Pokémon Yellow
Demon's Souls
Fire Emblem
Mass Effect
Final Fantasy Tactics
Mass Effect 2
Tales of Vesperia
Kingdom Hearts II
Xenoblade Chronicles
Tales of Symphonia
Star Ocean: The Second Story
Jade Empire
Final Fantasy XII
Deus Ex
Chrono Cross
Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars
Final Fantasy VII
Persona 4 Golden
Persona 5
Planescape: Torment
Final Fantasy IX
Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 3
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic
Fire Emblem Awakening
Final Fantasy VI
Chrono Trigger
Vagrant Story

Top 17 or so are some amazing games. Lots of this is probably kinda jumbled up and could be rearranged pretty hard.

04 Pokémon Yellow
03 Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn
02 Final Fantasy VI
01 Chrono Trigger

Ok - I can live with that. Top 8 no issue at all. We could argue order - but I think it's pretty solid.

I wouldn't have Vagrant story or Witcher 3 in my top 10 (not even in my personal top 30 or so) but I get that other people enjoy them.

I'll have to disagree on the top 10. I liked a few of those games, but probably the best one in that group to me is Pokemon which...ehh. (Admitedly, from all I've heard I'm probably going to like Torment a lot whenever I get around to playing it).

But the others...FF6...played it, really strong game in some stretches, really weak game in others. Chrono Trigger, played it, didn't leave much of an impression on me to be honest. Vagrant Story, played it, lost interest and didn't finish it. World of Warcraft, actually avoided playing it for years as I was scared of getting addicted like some of my friends...and then I played it, and it actually kinda bored me, and had a surprising number of bugs (For bugs...I managed to get out of the starting area without taking the main quest, and then it locked me out, played for a few hours without finding a single quest marker. I needed to jump around the outside of the building to get back to the first quest in the chain. Not the kind of polish I tend to expect from Blizzard). Secret of Mana...haven't played it, because a lot of my friends have and they tended to shit on it and call it a bad game (according to them basically an action game with not much RPG depth).

Don't have too much to say for the western RPGs granted (neither my friends nor I were terribly into them, outside of Planescape Torment which I still need to play). But this is just a severely underwhelming top 10.

A top 10 with...No FFT. No FFX. I'd love to see Valkyrie Profile, but that's a long shot. Would be happy to see Skies of Arcadia here. Would be happy to see Koudelka or Shadow Hearts 2 here. Would be happy to see a Fire Emblem game here. I could totally see a Persona game making the cut.

Just...god damn, obviously I don't expect any given top 10 list to agree with me, I expect some duds in the top 10, but there's actually nothing that I'm excited to see in this top 10. (Pokemon is a pretty polished and well-made game sure, I don't mind it in the top 10, but I can't say I feel like I'm cheering "wow, finally Pokemon getting some recognition").
