Uh, whats the issue?

If you are saying that he shouldn't have any debt AT ALL, I don't think that's what he meant by #5. I think he's talking about using debt to buy expensive cars and crap like that. Not necessarily calculated business debt.

I like Mike Rowe, but this whole "working man" image he puts up is bull shit. He's a communications graduate that hasn't worked an actual "dirty job" in his life.

These. Hard to take him all that seriously tbh. Working some dirty jobs for a TV crew doesn't exactly make him an authority on employment.

Except if you actually read things he has to say, he never claims to be a blue collar worker. He completely owns up to being a TV man. He's never called himself anything else.
What he DOES do, is he sets out to honor these kinds of workers and de-stigmatize the jobs they do, as well as run a fucking charity for people who want to go into trade jobs.
His shtick isn't "Hey everyone, do blue collar work like me.", it's "Hey everyone, don't make the same mistake I did, give blue collar work a shot."

I hate to play the hurr liberal card since I hate conservatrolls as much at the next person, but yeah, ths kind of backlash against Rowe (in fact this exact rhetoric of HES NOT A REAL WORKING MAN) was started largely as counterargument from pissy liberals mad that people are calling Bill Nye out.
The guy never gets political, so I don't know why the far left views him as such a fucking affront to their beliefs.

Sounds like he's taking a jab at people using their credit cards on things they cannot afford. Material possessions and eating out. Things that don't provide any value; not talking about a loan for a car (unless it's an extravagant car), not talking about a loan for education, not talking about a loan for a house.

Rarely do I agree with you on anything, Addy, but you nailed it. This topic is just doing a great job of proving how fucking entitled the generation after us is. I personally blame it on the expanding middle class. Their parents worked hard and moved up some in life, giving them advantages the family never had before the 90's. Now they think they can coast because everything was provided for them up to that point.

I know plenty of people in their late teens to early 30's who are hard workers and get shit done. They also all have one thing in common: They had to work for everything they have, nothing was ever given to them.

charey posted...
The one really out of touch rule is no debt. If your rich like a CEO or Actor that means never owning a house or car. Very few people can afford one in cash and in a lot of places not having a car means not being able to get a job.

By all means Mike, tell us how to get a car without going into debt while working an entry level job.

You're missing the point. He didn't say to take on NO debt. He said to avoid it when possible. If you have to take on debt to meet the minimum requirements for living, do so.

Things you NEED:

1) Somewhere to live
2) Food and water
3) A source of income

In the modern era, unless you live somewhere with good mass transit, a car and a cell phone are both requirements to having a source of income. Realistically, a computer is becoming a requirement too as more employers switch to online only applications, check stubs, etc. If you have to take out a loan to buy a used car, do it but use that car to get a job and pay your bills. That said, you don't HAVE to take out a load to buy a car. Get a job you can walk to, save up, buy a car. Repeat as needed to replace that clunker.

Don't go into debt buying electronics, expensive cars, drugs/cigarettes/alcohol, eating out, etc. Cut out the luxuries until your income is enough to cover that shit. Its not that hard to understand.

1: OK, he's asking me to check my privilege. That's reasonable.

2: Oh, you agree that people are entitled to life and liberty? So unusual to see that sentiment from neoliberals.

3: Hahahaha! Oh wait, you're serious. Let me laugh even harder. HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!! Seriously though, low-paying dead-end jobs are a thing, and most of them are really unpleasant to do. He should try working in the factory I just left some time.

4: YOU WILL HAVE PASSION, COG! No, we job creators have no reason to facilitate or nurture any enthusiasm for work, it's your job to get excited about staring at plastic bottles all day.

5: Exaggeration for effect, but overall an exortation for financial responsibility is reasonable. Still, who is this aimed at? Up to now it's apparently been aimed at Ark C people, but this one looks like it's for those who sponge off our labour. Plus, doesn't living in a tent eating beans rather conflict with the right to life due to exposure to the elements?

6: May you never be fucked. The whole point of safety rules and compliance is to reduce accidents and prevent employers from deliberately putting their workers in dangerous conditions to save a few dollars.

7: YOU WILL HAVE PASSION, COG! Evidently this guy has never worked the kind of job where flawless perfection is invisible and expected, and the only way to get noticed is to screw up even a little. Plus, if I'm supposed to abhor debt, why should I lend my labour to the boss for free?

8: No, don't try to raise issues affecting performance, either choose to be happy or put on your job helmet and blast off from your job cannon to Jobland where jobs grow on jobbies. (Heehee, jobbies).

9: Have this guy been to a library? They generally don't have the kind of in-depth books you need to acquire decent technical knowledge. And proper education is expensive, so upskilling frequently requires violating the abhoration of debt, and if we're on flexi-time, any education we get will at some point conflict with our work hours. Guess which one has to take priority.

10: [Insert joke about choosing to be born rich, able-bodied, without metal illness]. The part about not accepting credit for something one didn't do is a nice idea; can we make the capitalist class adopt this mantra?

11: What. What the actual fuck? You're actually saying we should just accept life is unfair? Doesn't this conflict with both #1 and #10? After all, the United States of America only exists because people refused to accept life was unfair. And if life really is unfair, and this is OK, doesn't this mean that there are a whole lot of people who don't deserve their success? Of course, we should just quit whining and not begrudge anyone their unearned success.

12: Dude, you JUST SAID life in unfair! And to take a real-world example, I have perfect vision. Some of my friends need glasses. Are we truly created equal? I, due to happy birth, don't need to spend money on glasses or contact lenses, and I don't need to put anything on my face or in my eye that can fall out, rendering my eyesight inferior.

In conclusion, he's an idiot and if you agree with him you are woefully naive and brainwashed.

This topic just proves beyond a shadow of a doubt how toxic liberalism really is. Only to a leftist can work ethic, self improvement, and personal responsibility be considered taboo and controversial. The only people who disagree with Mike Rowe are worthless, miserable, parasitic husks who want nothing better for their own lives except to drag everyone else down with them. I'm absolutely ashamed and disgusted that some of these people occupy the same landmass as me.

That's quite the exaggerated narrative.

I'm a pretty successful guy

I'm 27. I'm in the top 20% of the income in my area, and I do consulting work for large foundations, universities, and other public and nonprofit agencies outside of my real job.

My parents are drug addicts, we were intermittently homeless starting when I was 4 and ending when I was 13, and neither of them has had a real job in years. I have supported them my entire adult life, including when I was in college.

I think my work ethic is okay and I think this list is bullshit and I don't think you or any one else in this topic really has any insight for me that's gonna change my mind.
