I've been interning at a business for awhile and I'm doing a rotation for a new team. The team is hiring 2 new employees and I'm definitely qualified for the position but I don't graduate until May.

Another intern there that I've worked with and is a nice person has asked me about what my team does to help him decide if he wants to apply for the job. He is equally qualified but he graduates sooner than I do meaning he can apply for the position and start working before I can.

I planned on being honest with my co-worker about what the team does but I could also lie about what the team does in order to get them to not apply for the position. I was planning on not lying but I wonder if I should be lying.

What makes you think they'll be still hiring for that position until after you graduate?

It's not moral to lie - that's the simple part of your question. You can always sacrifice your integrity to get yourself ahead - but that usually ends very badly. You can always lie, cheat, and steal - that doesn't make it a good decision.

If the person is looking for a job and you think they'd be a good fit - let both that person and the hiring manager know. It's not a secret that a graduating intern is considering a full time position. You don't know that by the time you graduate there won't be a better fit or that the hiring manager will open another spot for you anyway.

Also, may is gone - is this 1 year in the future? If so, this is way too early for any employer to consider a candidate - even one they've invested in via internships so you gain nothing by trying to hide anything - the jobs open now are almost guaranteed not to be there in 1 year.

My boss has come up to me and told me to apply for the position, also they prefer interns over others. I'll also remain on as part-time until I graduate. I'll just be honest like I was going to, If I could get hurt by one intern than I wouldn't get the job anyway.

"doggy dog" is a common butchering of the phrase "dog eat dog"

If you're literally so fragile that just being honest about what your job entails means you'll lose it, then idk what to tell you. If you're also not confident enough in your own abilities that you think literally anyone being (potential) competition is going to cause you to lose your opportunity, again, I don't know what to tell you.

Also, the fact that you're considering being this dishonest at this early of a stage in your career tells me you'd probably have no problem being incredibly dishonest later on in your career when the stakes are much higher.

You don't seem like the type of person I would want working for me.

My natural reaction was to be honest and I've already talked to him about the position already, probably enough to give him an idea anyway, it wasn't until later when I thought that I might be an idiot for not taking advantage of the situation. I've been told I'm not cut throat enough.

I see. I've never heard the phrase "doggy dog" before so though it was a reference.
